Serious Sam 3: BFE

#1

I've put DNF on hold for the time being, but I'm keeping my hopes up for Serious Sam 3. Croteam haven't disappointed me yet (yes, I liked Serious Sam 2 a lot; one of my top games of 2005).

They're back to the more realistic style (much more so than it ever has been), Egyptian ruins and most importantly - no weapon carry limit. Kamikazes, headless bombers, Gnaars, Arachnoids - all there, plus the spiders and Scrapjack (Mancubus-like thing). New minigun looks awesome too. I, for one, like the melee attacks (what Duke should've been, Sam rips out hearts, eyeballs and takes apart Kleer skeletons whole) and the reloading adds suspense.

The levels are twice as big as the ones in TSE, and SS3 will probably have the largest hordes of enemies we've seen in a Sam game. (imagine the last level oh God)

they got me after watching the first trailer. i hope they add some kind of lame story to it that keeps me playing it through. but shooting cannonballs around should be motivation anough.

I liked it when he ripped that one guys eye out in the trailer. That was so awesome.

I'm so excited for the game, hopefully the month delay did the game some good.

First picture of that giant demon thing looks awesome. Though i am sure that i have seen it before in some other games. Is that a shadow in the dust from the demons head?

There is a story. There are cutscenes and plenty of phone calls Sam gets throughout, plus I'm sure there are messages and other things.

I've always wondered why everyone ignores or dismisses the bits of story you get in TFE and TSE in the form of NETRICSA messages, those were good stuff, IMO.

It's called a Khnum.

It resembles a Cyberdemon, much like the Scrapjack looks like a Mancubus.

Seems that even Serious Sam hasn't been able to escape the Curse of Grey.

Serious Sam is the most colorful fps I know. Making this one gray would be quite a shocker.

What we've seen so far isn't too colorful, but it's balanced. Hey, it's Egypt after all, The First Encounter wasn't exactly colorful.

Second Encounter, and Sam 2 is holy shit paint plaster, but if it isn't gray, it'll always be brown.

Do you prefer brown?

New trailer is up, demonstrating all of the weapons in action.

The laser gun and sniper disappoint me. Laser gun looks like they ripped it from Serious Sam HD and just reskinned it, whereas the Sniper has the same interface and zoom sound and they don't show a reload anim in the trailer.

The rest is mouthwatering though.

The thing that bothers me in this game is how bad the hand models look.
I don't remember seeing such dull and lifeless hand animations and textures before this game.
The arms look like they are from a cardboard dummy or something like that.

What exactly do you mean by hand animations?

I do agree the hand model isn't great, but looks at the SSHD hand/fingers. It looks textureless, just a little basic lighting on it.

I dunno about textures in general.

Plus I doubt we'll see any complex mocap animations in this game.

They just look out of place.
The rest of the game seems better looking and better animated than the hands.
The hands almost look like place holders.

That's a cool trailer mechmorphix616.
The blood and gore looks a bit ugly and repetitive to me. I don't see anything wrong with the hand animation o.O

Seems you can destroy everything like the walls and pillars as shown in the trailer. I like that kind of realism!

Yeah, the environment is (fully?) destructible. It's no cover, all man, after all.

Also, here's Sam's latest jab at Duke:

Poppycock.

Serious Sam TFE (HD) has some of the most vibrant and warm colours ever, at times it seems that you can almost feel the heat of the sun shining on your mug.

To me, Serious Sam 3 is a clear visual downgrade compared to Serious Sam HD.

This'll be a definate pre-purchase for me. I loved the HD remakes of the old games, and I get 20% off BFE on Steam for owning those two, so that's a real win win for me.

Holy shit! I thought these screenshots were from SS3, not TFE HD.

I agree about the warm colors, I guess I didn't exactly grasp what you meant.

Plus those screens are from the Plughead preview. I don't know what level is that, but plenty of other ones are much better in that aspect.

I don't see anything wrong with Serious Sam II, btw. In fact, Croteam plan on doing a total remake or HD of SS2 after BFE is released. This is from their Facebook wall:

Quote

Regarding Serious Sam 2 on Steam, our current plan is to basically recompile the game, so we can then add Steamworks for online play.
That way we will have all Croteam developed Sam PC games available online at one place.

We were thinking on doing a HD + total remake, but we will leave that for the future plans.
There is a lot we would like to change in gameplay, visuals etc. to make it like it should have been (that's why it is reffered to as total remake), unlike HDs where gameplay sticked to the originals. But, we decided to keep it in original, as, contrary to general thinking, looking at feedbacks we received over years, quite a few people like it as is now and we would dissapoint them.

We still need to do business talks with Valve and Devolver, but really don't expect roadblocks there.

Plan is to start all that after BFE is released.

Serious Sam 2 was horribly glitchy, look childish and had dumb jokes. Unlike SS:FE or SS:SE which were awesome. SS:2 is the equivalent of DNF for Serious Sam.

My dad is a big fan of Serious Sam first and second encounter. They are definately in his top 5 favorite games. He'll love this one too although I'm not sure how much he will like the soundtrack. He turned 80 this year and heavy metal is not his music of choice :D But maybe the video soundtrack is not representitive of the game's soundtrack.

Scrapjack facelift ftw.

Really fast-paced blood and gore trailer. Also the lighting is now much brighter. Like you're frying under the Egyptian sun.

Ah man, It looks like it really retains the instant kill feel and pace of the old FPS games,
which should maximize the fun factor of the gameplay.

This is something I wish DNF had kept, instead of getting a bit too serious and more realistic (than duke3D),
it made Duke feel far weaker and more vulnerable, which is not a trait I would attribute to the mighty Duke we loved in the 90s!

This will certainly be a breath of fresh (albeit nostalgic) air,
given the trend amonst modern FPS games.

And this is coming from someone who wasn't much of a fan of the Serious Sam games,
(I played them too late, and the more open levels bored me compared to duke3D - I think I suffered from ADHD after playing duke! :D)
