Searching for old map: Outworld  "Looking for an old Duke map"

User is offline   necroslut

I'm looking for an old Duke 3D map called Outworld by James Thies. I can't find it anywhere and the place I got it from back in the days is no longer online. Does anyone have it lying around?

Unfortunately, it's not on DNR and I'm not having much luck with MSDN either. To wax nostalgic, Outworld was the first usermap for Duke that I ever played. Shame it doesn't appear to be around anymore because it wasn't a bad map, apart from that stupid firetruck that lobbed missiles at you. I think the guy that did that map also did two other maps called "Endworld" and "Pigworld" so you may have better luck searching for those.

Yeah, I can't find it either. Searched through the Dukeworld archive but didn't find it. Also searched a bit on Google and found an old site, Greg's Single Player Maps, that housed a few maps including Outworld but unfortunately the link to the .zip is dead.

Yeah, I got it from Greg's Single Player Maps back in the days, along with Endworld/Pigworld. I've been able to find those two again thanks to a guy at the 3DR forums a couple of years back, but he didn't have Outworld... Of course I've already checked dukeworld and every other place I could think of, I made this thread hoping that some forumer had it lying around.

Maybe you can try to contact him? His email adress should be in the readme files along with those other maps you mentioned.

I could try asking at the DNR forums to see if any of those guys have it stored away on a disc or something.

Depending on how old the maps are, those emails could be dead or unchecked.
I feel like I've heard of Outworld but I can't remember if I ever played it. The map collection on Duke4.net is rather large, it doesn't have it?

Just a few days ago I packed away a big box of old and outdated computer software. Its too hard to get at right now. But maybe someone else out here has a commercially released CD that was called DukeZone or something like that. It was a collection of about 500 maps from back in the late 90's. Maybe its on there.

I've already tried, years ago, and that email was dead by then already.

I'd appreciate that. :(

No, it's not there.

I'm pretty sure it's not on one of those CD's. It was never on one of the big ftp's either.

So far no luck. Both Mikko and Puritan have checked their storage but neither came up with it.

Thanks anyway. Maybe it'll turn up eventually, after all I found endworld/pigworld after asking on the 3DR forums and some guy had them in his maps folder. :(

Do you remember when you played, installed or downloaded it ? It can be useful for searching...

The page where it was hosted seems to have been online from 1999 until 2003, so it was somewhere between those years. I kept it around until a disk crash in maybe 2005 or something, haven't played it since then.

Thought I'd bump this, just in case someone new has it.

While there's probably not that many new members, I'll bump this thread again as almost two years have passed and I still haven't found that damn map.

If you really love Duke Nukem and like to play
Outworld by James Thies, then try
this.
And while you're at it, then try
this too. [Admin Edit: Pirate Duke 3D link removed.]

Great link, thanks. Tried the actual map itself, it's the typical "childhood memory" level with a moving fire truck, how cool (until it crushes you accidentally when you are wandering around what to do). Unfortunately it's your typical 1996 level with horrible oversizing, proper lack of shading and details, coloured sprites and monsters (that habit carried on even in some modern maps, like the earlier ones by MRCK) and overall confusing layout.

Title : OUT WORLD
Author : James Thies
E-mail : ji...@emapnet.com
Web Page : Am I the only person who hates the
web???

The Game:
Your R&R is OVER, Duke! Get your ass out of bed,
grab your boots and
hit the streets. "Out World", a lonely colony at the
edge of charted
space is under attack by several different species of
aliens! Earth
Defense hasn't been able to send reinforcements yet,
so we need YOU
to win the battle of control of Out World, until help
arrives.

DESIGNER'S NOTES:
Outworld is BIG and VERY detailed- plenty of things to
break and blow-
up. But, I did keep an eye on the frame rate, it's
doesn't go below
10, however, if you run around and let the aliens
follow you, it will
go down to a crawl. I recommend 66Mz or faster and
kill everything as
soon as you see it!
In addition to the detailed graphics, there are plenty
of sound
effects, including Duke Talking- check it out!

To play, you must include all of the files in this
ZIPped file in your
(Registered version) Duke3d directory and type:

duke3d -map outworld.map

or duke3d /map outworld.map

Additional Credits to :
Klaus Breuer (sz0...@rzmail.uni-erlangen.de) Without his
Unofficial FAQ
Guide to Build, I would probably still be trying to figure
out how to make a
sector within a sector.

And Everybody else that uploaded a map, that I could learn
from! I
appreciate it!!

Working on:Sharks to Heretic Gargoyles, Octabrain to
Cacodemons-
(probably include them in my next map)

DukeMatch Level : Nope- probably too big anyway
Difficulty Settings : Don't know how to implement them!

Unfortunately, there are chances I didn't actually get to play this map. (Originally I downloaded maps via dial-up from FTP/HTTP directories and certain websites, but obviously I didn't cover even most of them.)

Nevertheless, in case it is the original, then this is a *really* great find!!

Hopefully any other forum member may confirm the originality of this. (The timestamps do seem to be a hint of this, even though there's that weird offset of 100 years that's commonly found in certain archives.)

The files in the directory OUTWORLD are dated 19.05.1996, 04.08.1996 and 06.08.1996.

I optimized the Map Pack on 05. August 2017 at 07:10 PM and removed some maps,
which might cause trouble, because of their textures.

Now there are 45 Singleplayer Maps and 7 Dukematch Maps.

All these maps are dated between 1996 and circa 2000.
So they are old maps, just like OUT WORLD.

I like to play them with Windows XP.

If someone wants to play newer stuff, he can use
newer maps from the
Duke Nukem Repository.

They also have the Duke Nukem 3D
High Resolution Pack v5.4.

I own the Duke Nukem 3D v1.3d CD, but use today the Duke Nukem 3D
Atomic Edition portable, which was my second link.

I don't think, that its illegal, because I never saw a buyable portable version,
but only a free version and it works perfect.

It will not cause any trouble if you either remove them from your Duke3D folder after playing or change their names: the first art file to mapname_00.art, the second to mapname_01.art, etc.
Can you upload those maps too?

I'm glad a piece of Duke3D history is no longer lost, are any other maps in the .rar of importance?

If you are using EDuke32 (versions from the last 3 years), of course. (Not being able to edit posts after an hour is a problem.)

Hello Anvil,

some maps causes glitches, maybe the developer lacked experience,
so I avoid playing them.

The removed Duke Nukem 3D Maps are asylum, bobsp1, bobsp2, coc, lcrypt, scorpius and starlite.

They are still available. Just look at

Asylum

BobSp1

BobSp2

City of Carnage

lcrypt, scorpius and more

The_Starlite_Project

You can also get a lot of old and new Duke Nukem 3D Maps at

Duke Maps

Duke Nukem Repository

Hello Lunick,

Yes, anslem, Boot, dharga and Secrets_of_the_Acropolis.

You can also try citywar, d7, quad, Roch and the_final_confrontation.

The other Maps are OK too, but seem to be more average.

I prefer Singleplayer Maps, but some Dukematch Maps look good,
and maybe someone can use them.

The start of Secrets_of_the_Acropolis is a bit tricky.
First, You go up the stairs, then left and move the stone
at the wall from the side with the Open-Key.

That map is basically early_duke3d_maps.map City map? Check. Weird palletes for monsters? Check. Even weirder sound replacements? Check. A lot of scripted one-liners? Check (I had a good chuckle at the dig at Quake) Lewd images, a lot? Check and check! Enjoyed it a lot

Because of the Error Message concerning E1L9.MAP at the end of the OUT WORLD Map,
I added the maps E1L9.MAP and E1L10.MAP to the outworld directory.

These maps are called Mystery Levels 1 and 2.
Now the OUT WORLD Map should be complete.

The updated Map Pack is still
here.

The Mystery Levels 1 and 2 were meant to be played after the OUT WORLD Map.

There is a trick in the first Mystery Level E1L9.MAP.
The last Access Card, the red one, is visible on a screen near a revolving swastika, but not accessible.
To get it, activate the switch beside the screen. Now the right plank is lifted.

Behind the place of the Blue Access Card, there is the sign "TONIGHT HOT HOT HOT" and a staircase.
Go down the stairs, at the little aquarium turn left and shoot the red fire extinguisher near the exit
to the outside sign "HOTEL - ALLEY CAT LOUNGE", with the RPG on top.

The fire extinguisher blows a hole in the wall and in the back of the path waits the Red Access Card for You.

In the hall with the pool and the red floor, there are a step and two brown doors.
The left door can be opened. It leads to a corridor with the card Reader for the Red Access Card
and a red-gray dappled, movable wall at the end.

There You see the Auto-Destruct Button behind bars.
If You try to open the bars, then a lift in front of the Button goes down.

Now go back the corridor and use the Red Access Card.
This unlocks the brown door on the other side.
Open the door and step in the teleporter.
A brown lift will bring You up to the room with the Auto-Destruct Button.
