Inspirations for mappers

User is offline   Mia Max

I want to start a thread where mappers can get their inspirations for building maps by photos.

Please also post some pictures that would be cool to see in maps.

I use only the pictures in my head. No need for this.

For me, the most iconic Duke 3D scenes are about urban decay. They are abandoned places, with the monsters representing thugs, or the ghosts of civilization, or something...

With that in mind, here is a photo gallery I found called "the ruins of Detroit" with some pics that might be inspirational.

If we're talking about urban decay, look no further than Opacity.com. I have a fascination with abandoned places, so it's one of the few sites I've got bookmarked. This guy's got TONS of galleries of deserted prisons, hospitals (etc.) that he's visited. Here's some random pics pulled from it;

Seeing all these pictures just reminds me of how old the build engine is, and how incapable it is of creating realistic environments without a lot of slope work or sprite work, or both. Even with the new ROR mapping is somewhat limited when trying to create a lot of the environments in this thread. It's the type of thing which would be much better suited to the DNF engine, but, I'm starting to get sick of DNF. Time to get back to work on my own map.

Adding another one to the list here. I love browsing through this forum for various photos of abandoned places, lots of choice; http://www.28dayslat...display.php?f=3

Interestingly enough the buildings in Detroit would give some good inspiration. Such as the Michigan Central Station.

One of the things holding me back from doing the urban decay look is how much work would be involved in the minor stuff like piles of debris, broken glass, bricks, old support beams, old rotted furniture etc...laying around throughout the map. It would be a huge amount of custom models to make. There are plenty of textures around the web for the basic building structures but the attention to details like I just mentioned is beyond my patience to impliment. It gives me way more appreciation for how much designers for other games have gone through for this look.

I'll have to see if I still have that older game called Kingpin. I remember that having the urban decay look to it.

Kingpin was maybe the best looking game of its era.

A lot of the more recent pics are actually really inspiring, and quite doable too thanks to ROR. Honestly the ROR has breathed a whole new life into mapping, so thanks again Helix if you're reading this thread.

The problem is it's so inspiring, it's making me want to abandon my current WIP map, and start something based on some of this instead :)
Although what I'll probably do is scrap my original concept of having one really big building, take what I've done so far and turn it into an urban area, which should be fairly easy

Novaks first picture might not be possible. And i have a very similiar pattern on my floor. I can't make my own textures, so i had to actually make the pattern with walls and vertics. But those graffiti pics looks amazing.

I checked out the whole gallery of pics. Cool stuff. I bet the nearest ACE hardware store made a small fortune in selling cans of spraypaint to all the kids who made the graffitti. :)

There is one would be awsome, probably hard to make too.

LV-426 / Acheron processor or terraforming from the movie Aliens (1986)

I think MSandt made a level like that called lv426 or something.

Those pics are great Zaxtor. I just can't see how that house is possible without RoR. And i'm still not trusting helixhorned's version of the RoR.

That map of mine is from the Stone Age but there are plenty of excellent Acheron/LV426-themed Duke3D maps out there.
