DNF 2001 Breakdown  "What was what?"

I think it had the potential to be that good if we had stayed 100% focused on delivering that vision. It wasn't as good from the perspective of a full game on shelves as the trailer makes it look because it wasn't done yet. I do think if we had finished that vision for late 2002 (maaaybe late 2003) it would have been pretty spectacular.

I've always though that the 2001 build would've been a Half-Life killer, in terms of interactivity, action and pace. Would you agree?

Hell, I could say it could have beaten DooM3 and Half-life2 to death too, although they would have been released 3~4 years after DNF '01 hypothetical release.

@Wieder

What was the Story of DNF in 2001? Was Bombshell in the Game?

This brings a lot of light on that specific trailer.
It was more playable than i thought.

Hope we'll get these versions one day !

We will. But GBX wants the life cycle of DNF to come to an end first. In one or 2 years at most.
If we Duke fans manage to create a topic so big on GBX forums that the servers won't load up then we have even more chances :(

This is ridiculous. You should be in insane denial if you really think we would somehow see the 2001 version surfaced anywere. The chances are it doesn't even exist except for the trailer.

You're talking as if it were typical for old versions to get released. This is not the case.

Randy said that the problem is getting them to work with newer machines.
And why you deny it like that ? Maybe something like lameduke will happen !

I'm not denying anything. I'm simply saying that, based on what we do know, it's very unlikely to happen.

Never say never !
Let's hope that GBX is waiting for the right time to release them.

Dude, even 3dRealms said there won't be a 2001 version and you still believe that Gearbox would release it? They didn't even release mod tools for it. Gearbox wouldn't be releasing some decade old version of the game they didn't even worked on that probably doesn't exist anyway.

What are they going to loose if they release it in 2 years ?
They won't make money out of it anyway. At least they can appreciate the fans that way !

Hahaha. Gearbox listening to their fans? Sure they do. My Hyundai Elantra also makes 700WHP and holds the track record at the Nurburgring. And it's rear wheel drive.

Why bother? It is not a common practice to release this stuff. The only chance of seeing 200 version is through the leak. Assuming it really exists since 3dr never really restarted from scratch(except one engine change).

Exactly. If they won't make money out of it then why give a shit about stupid fans? Fuck them.

C'mon man, all they have to do is upload them on the net and say, here they are, you asked them download them now fix them if you can and play them.
They'll get much more Duke supporters this way !

Bro, give it up. Scott Miller has already confirmed a long ass time ago that any previous build was pretty much scrapped and there would NEVER be a leak, seeing how it was all pretty much thrown away, save for a few things. Now if Randy P is saying otherwise, then that goes to show how shallow alot of Duke fans are by buying into the bullshit hype yet again. I'm hoping everybody has smartened up to the point of not being fooled again.

Why did they hide dev console? Why did they try to lock discovered access to it with a patch? They don't really care for supporters that much.

Also, why do you think they even have the folder with 2001 version?

Because we have newer gameplay videos from 2003, 2005 and 2006 versions.
They have it but i don't care as long as i don't have it.
OK, i didn't said that we'll get them and i'm 100% sure about it. I said that we have chances !

The videos are probably from back then, and not recorded recently from archived old builds.

But why Randy said we played the old versions but i don't think so we'll ever release them ?
What's the purpose of lying and making fans start demanding them ? Why not just say we don't have them, they don't exist anymore and end of story ?

Yeah you make a great point. Randy has never lied, misled, teased, cheated, exaggerated or tried to seek attention in any way, shape or form.

Edit: He certainly hasn't ever deliberately withheld or cut out anything that any fan would want in the slightest: http://forums.duke4.net/forum/16-the-lack-of-dnf-mods-amp%3B-editing/

I agree, i want mod tools too. But, correct me if i'm wrong, Randy never said that we'll get the mod tools. He only said that maybe they'll release them in the future.

He said "it's something we'd like to do." Now that's as close as you can get to saying "we're going to release the mod tools" without actually saying "we're going to release the mod tools." In hindsight, it's painfully obvious that he never had the intention of releasing them (and even if he does, it's too little too late).

Now it's not just a harmless little white lie or implication. He specifically said it to make people believe that there will be mod tools, to get more people to give him their money. Pure greed, and the very definition of a cheat. If he honestly wasn't sure if they were going to release mod tools, then he simply should have said just that.

The amount of bullshit in this inteview makes me sad. Randy and his "partner" are evading the most interesting questions and outright lie about secret levels.

How could he lie so flagrantly?

Since i don't know much about GBX besides Borderlands which i've been playing for a month, do they really gave mod tools with many of their games ?

No. Their back catalog mainly consists of expansion packs, console ports, and shitty console war games.
