That's my thought, i personally think my posts aren't that constructive.
(hehehe... just kidding)
Sometimes I use the rep system when something makes me laugh just because I believe that is of benefit to the forum... I consider that constructive. So if people consider posting boobs constructive, I say don't worry about it and let them vote as they see fit.
I understand what you are saying. It is interesting to see what people value and what they don't also.

This has to be the funkiest page of a thread I've ever seen in terms of rep usage. This muskydragon guy was being a troll, he got massively repped down (I didn't bother reading the neg repped comments, so the rep system is working in that regard

Maybe it is nice people giving you the negatives because you have SO many they can't imagine anyone actually having that many who didn't want more. Nice people can be StRaNgE sometimes.

(imagines "Look at this fellow with his 50 negatives! He must be collecting them... I will give him a few more...") Hehehe

Perhaps some limits. e.g. right now you get X number of upreps per day, but to downrep someone you need to uprep someone for every downrep you do.
#195 Posted 18 June 2011 - 11:02 PM
Still waiting on that example

Edit: although I suppose in Mr Deviance's case, he posted SEVERAL topics on basically the same thing and got a lot of rep that way. He used to have a negative reputation and now he has the highest reputation on the forum. I'm not saying it's undeserved, but I don't think it should be as high as it is, and I don't think he should have posted all those topics on the consoles/bump mapping, it almost feels like he created new threads because he knew people would give him loads of rep for each thread.

Here is an arbitrary sample . One person's work announced. No point. I'm not doing anything with Duke Plus, but those that are do not acknowledge it either. If your theory would be correct, the entire Eduke32 team, not just TX, should be in the 200 range by now.
The rating is for Fun. Look at my score lol. I have not done one thing for the community, except promises. I should be like +5 or something.

The example I was thinking of was more along the lines of people posting about what other people want to hear to get rep points. I didn't know that DT had released that version of DukePlus yet, I was going to rep him when he did, but since it's probably already out, I went back and gave him a greeny

And if you want I can reduce your rep count to that if you'd like

And yet the problem is not that the system encourages people to behave differently. The real problem is that the system is awfully path dependent. A well-timed good/bad post can lock-in your reputation for the simple reason that people are less prone to downvote a bad post by a green person and more prone to downvote a bad post by a red person. A person's reputation becomes irreversible because of his reputation, even though a given post's "value" should be totally independent of its poster's history (reputation).
This problem is particularly evident when it comes to admins like Yatta and TX, who should be out of the reputation system altogether. Admins attract upvotes and repel downvotes simply for being admins. TX has openly said that he can see who casts what, which is like voting in an open ballot system. (Note that the problem is not really that admins can see who votes whar or that the rest of us can't but the fact that this has been openly stated/is commonly known, which has an effect on voting behavior.) This isn't to say that admins deserve to be downvoted more but that they should be subjected to the same petty voting behavior as the rest of us.
Moreover, there's the fact that the system treats, say, two persons with 40 green votes as similar even if one 40-green person had a 100% positive rating and the other just barely above 50%. Therefore it'd be more useful to show a person's reputation in percentages.
Personally I couldn't care less and neither should anyone else (see the first paragraph of this post). I have barely touched the vote buttons.

I vote up/down indiscriminately (now that I can vote). I don't care about how much rep a person has, or what their title is, because I know that 99% of people can't see what I voted and the ones that can either don't care or wouldn't dare warn/ban someone just because of a vote.
