Ah...I was wondering what happened. I see old posts so I know he wasn't wiped like other former members.

I've never voted before, and just tried to vote up somebody's post and it said "Action failed: You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day"
My quota is zero?

I think you have to have a certain number of post before you can vote. I don't remember what that number is. It isn't high...just more than 0.

I think i only got high rep points for posting boobs ( Duke Nudem thread ) for download.
That's my thought, i personally think my posts aren't that constructive.
Yeah... agree, so I gave you some negatives to balance them out. Sorry about that.
(hehehe... just kidding)

Sometimes I use the rep system when something makes me laugh just because I believe that is of benefit to the forum... I consider that constructive. So if people consider posting boobs constructive, I say don't worry about it and let them vote as they see fit.
I understand what you are saying. It is interesting to see what people value and what they don't also.

I guess it's 50, because I have 40.

This has to be the funkiest page of a thread I've ever seen in terms of rep usage. This muskydragon guy was being a troll, he got massively repped down (I didn't bother reading the neg repped comments, so the rep system is working in that regard :() But then people were repping other people up for basically flaming back. I'd never thought I'd see the day when positive rep points were being given as a reward for disruptive behavior.

You asked THAT?! Show me which post so I can go vote it down too... that is the dumbest question I have ever heard. (ok, not really. Hehehe)

Maybe it is nice people giving you the negatives because you have SO many they can't imagine anyone actually having that many who didn't want more. Nice people can be StRaNgE sometimes. :(

(imagines "Look at this fellow with his 50 negatives! He must be collecting them... I will give him a few more...") Hehehe

I think someone misunderstood my previous post. I simply don't understand why people voted it down o.O And i was banned for misusing the rep system xD

And the commander, i think you misunderstood the post if you were the one downvoting it.

When you reach -100, will it automagically instigate a permaban?

Probably not Posted Image try the ignore system. Looks pretty efficient. Posted Image

The system could use a bit more balance, I think. It seems that it's easy to make a couple of posts that pander to the community and get a lot of upreps, then go on a trolling spree with your high rep.

Perhaps some limits. e.g. right now you get X number of upreps per day, but to downrep someone you need to uprep someone for every downrep you do.

Give an example of a post by someone pandering to the community that's worthy of voting up. Currently the two people with the highest reps on these forums are TX and Mr Deviance, and both have put a lot of work into doing things for the community. TX manages the forum, works on eduke32, yet still takes the time to answer people's questions if they have trouble. Mr Deviance has done lots of investigation into the DNF console and bump mapping problems, both of which he managed to solve. As for me, I suppose I have a medium-high rating which I guess can be attributed somewhat to all my work on lighting the original Duke levels. So other than putting effort into something, sometimes I vote people up because they made a funny comment, and very rarely, when I agree with them.

Still waiting on that example :D

Edit: although I suppose in Mr Deviance's case, he posted SEVERAL topics on basically the same thing and got a lot of rep that way. He used to have a negative reputation and now he has the highest reputation on the forum. I'm not saying it's undeserved, but I don't think it should be as high as it is, and I don't think he should have posted all those topics on the consoles/bump mapping, it almost feels like he created new threads because he knew people would give him loads of rep for each thread.

Here is an arbitrary sample . One person's work announced. No point. I'm not doing anything with Duke Plus, but those that are do not acknowledge it either. If your theory would be correct, the entire Eduke32 team, not just TX, should be in the 200 range by now.

The rating is for Fun. Look at my score lol. I have not done one thing for the community, except promises. I should be like +5 or something. Posted Image

The example I was thinking of was more along the lines of people posting about what other people want to hear to get rep points. I didn't know that DT had released that version of DukePlus yet, I was going to rep him when he did, but since it's probably already out, I went back and gave him a greeny :D Those models will certainly come in useful in the map I've been working on, if I can only stop playing DNF multiplayer...

And if you want I can reduce your rep count to that if you'd like Posted Image but honestly you've made some decent funny lines here and there which I've repped you for.

Could someone please tell caine to stop trolling and downvoting people all the time?

To counter trolling there is an "ignore" feature. It always worked for me.

I noticed that once you you've repped a post, you can't un-rep it. This means that if you accidentally hit the wrong button, or if you change your mind about it, you're unable to do anything about it. Will there ever be an option to undo rep points?

Yatta and TX have argued that one reason for the system is to make people act nicer. This is an understandable goal from an administrator's point of view. Of course, anyone willing to alter his or her behavior based on green or red votes should be viewed with nothing but utter contempt. It's like religious people who do good stuff only because they believe that takes them to heaven and, similarly, refrain from doing bad stuff only because they're afraid of Hell.

And yet the problem is not that the system encourages people to behave differently. The real problem is that the system is awfully path dependent. A well-timed good/bad post can lock-in your reputation for the simple reason that people are less prone to downvote a bad post by a green person and more prone to downvote a bad post by a red person. A person's reputation becomes irreversible because of his reputation, even though a given post's "value" should be totally independent of its poster's history (reputation).

This problem is particularly evident when it comes to admins like Yatta and TX, who should be out of the reputation system altogether. Admins attract upvotes and repel downvotes simply for being admins. TX has openly said that he can see who casts what, which is like voting in an open ballot system. (Note that the problem is not really that admins can see who votes whar or that the rest of us can't but the fact that this has been openly stated/is commonly known, which has an effect on voting behavior.) This isn't to say that admins deserve to be downvoted more but that they should be subjected to the same petty voting behavior as the rest of us.

Moreover, there's the fact that the system treats, say, two persons with 40 green votes as similar even if one 40-green person had a 100% positive rating and the other just barely above 50%. Therefore it'd be more useful to show a person's reputation in percentages.

Personally I couldn't care less and neither should anyone else (see the first paragraph of this post). I have barely touched the vote buttons.

I vote up/down indiscriminately (now that I can vote). I don't care about how much rep a person has, or what their title is, because I know that 99% of people can't see what I voted and the ones that can either don't care or wouldn't dare warn/ban someone just because of a vote.

I don't make any rules of when i vote. You really can't decide who to vote beforehand.

I like how someone keeps going back and down-voting posts I made over a month ago. Maybe there should be an expiration date for these things?

How would that improve the system?

No, there shouldn't, maybe someone read it just now or something. Also, who's keep going back? I can only see one vote on your profile that was for your "month ago" message. Shit, why are you taking this so seriously? One guy downvoted your half-month old message and you're complaining about it.

There, take an upvote.
