What's your GT? I'll Dukematch you or go co-op.

If you ever tried to open the MSDOS.SYS file under Windows 95/98/ME (I like Windows ME :D ) there is an option to stop the system even loading Windows ('BootGui=0' IIRC among other cool tweaks) thus loading MS-DOS and requiring you to type WIN to load Windows manually as was the case before those Operating Systems. Interestingly the boot menu used by the Start-Up disk can be used in Config.Sys to create infinite multiple configurations which is useful for compatibility with different software if you know how to add the correct IF statements to AutoExec.bat.

interesting. I never knew that

I do that on my old 486 computer running Win95. It's set to boot into DOS first unless I choose to go into Windows. It's the best. Plus, long file name support. If I can ever figure out how to get that working outside Windows...

I had an old 486 running Windows 95 but I tinkered around with it too much and knackered it. I tend to just stick to fucking around in VMs instead now.

That is freaking awesome.

English should be destroyed. Any language that doesn't properly conjugate or decline should be abolished from human speech. All weak and irregular verbs should be eliminated.

I don't have many files that use more than the 8-dot-3 system supports, force of habbit I suppose. It's not too difficult once you figure it out, as a general rule, just don't have more than 8 charachters.

For example, you have a file called "DukeNukem.ext" but to run it in MS-DOS you have to make it fit the 8-dot-3 limitations, so you would type the file name "DUKENU~1.EXT" then if there were more files in that directory which had the first six charachters matching, they would be "DUKENU~2.EXT" and so on - .EXT represents a generic extension, this could be different for each file though the rule still applies.

Of course, it isn't always as simple as that, some charachters are ignored by MS-DOS, such as spaces and symbols, but the rules for how these are treat vary slightly. The best thing to do is to find a directory with long and 'special' file names inside and type DIR to see how MS-DOS handles the names.

It may be worth noting that modifying a file in certain ways in DOS will replace the long file name with an MS-DOS file name, which may cause problems when you try to run the program in Windows, but I don't know why you would be playing with Windows apps in DOS (Though this is also possible with the right extenders.)

@trencheel303; Yeah, I can write up some instructions on how to do this if you want.

And @ nobody in particular, while I am on the subject of MS-DOS, here's some other interesting little facts (or, at least, I found it interesting) - you can actually run a cut-down Windows 3.1 from the Windows 9X installation discs, though making it do anything useful is not particularly easy, this is in fact the DOSX executable which is used to run the installer. Also, you can mess with the graphics for the installer, you can open files like "SUBACK.BIN" with any program that supports .BMP images and modify it, my Windows 98 backup displays the serial number at the bottom now so I don't have to get the box every time. Other .BIN files serve other purposes, "W98SETUP.BIN" is the file that DOSX (Windows 3.1) uses as it's shell on the disc to install the operating system.

I am currently reading The Alphabet of Manliness. This book kicks ass. I may or may not have grown hair in places I didn't have hair previously because of reading this book.

I've suspected as much for a while actually. It isn't hard to tell that the Windows 95/98 setup environment is Windows 3.1 based as it is clearly the same interface used. I run Windows 3.1 in DOSbox for shits n' giggles occasionally, but I much prefer NT 3.51.

My 3.11 has been sitting in the garage for the past 6 years or so through hot summers and dust. I really hope it still works though, when we first got it, it was the ultimate powerbox: 8 mb of RAM, 300 mb hard drive, and a CD-ROM drive OMFG! I remember playing music cd's on it :(

Those were the days when CD-ROM drives were connected via soundcards. I got rid of that box at the collection station last year or so.

Which was for sound support right?

Some old Compaq was my first PC with no soundcard or cd-rom drive, I added those later. Played Duke3D on it for the first time and even without sound I was hooked.

No[t only]. My sound card had a controller for Sony and Mitsumi drives. (Anything else was too expensive anyway.)

Yeah, when dukematching in the office after work most of us had Compaqs with no sound.

Back then everything server more than one purpose or could be upgraded, the SoundBlaster 16 and other cards were compatible with at least 1 CD-ROM interface;
Posted Image

There is also an "Upgrade Socket" for an additional PCM/Synth chip on many models, you could also upgrade the memory on cards such as the AWE series and most Graphics Cards, you could install a bigger cache for your processor and your Hard Drives and Floppy Drives plugged into an adapter card that usually had Parallel and Serial ports on the back as well as headers for an additional COM port and usually a Game/Midi port among other things. Some of these were very good ideas, immagine if you could upgrade the memory on your nVidia GTX or whatever the cards are that are around today and on top of that the card also gave you some more USB ports - that would kick ass!

This is no laughing matter, a wave of attack camels could wipe out a whole group of tanks! :(

What? The military is not sure who is in charge, so they don't act right at this moment - unless you are joking? The only concern is that in this mess might be another Iatola Komani, forcing yet another ancient civilization to worship an imaginary friend in a view month time. :D

p.s. Ayatollah Khomeini, should'nt ridicule this moron.

Well, I'm not, actually; I've got tanks ready made in Unity, now all I need are camels and moron actors, and we could make a game out of it, and let the camels win. We could give them magical strength ... playing god is serious business. And I've got tiles that look like from this area, it's India, but ... :D will I ever grow up?

^Make that game. Give me a copy.

Also, I find Egyptian rioters on horse and camel back rather funny...but then again, I also know a guy whose family is in Cairo and he has been rather upset most of this week.

Unrelated: I recently played some trivia game with my brothers and there was a question about the Afghanistan national sport (Buz or something) that involved horse riding and decapitating a goat. I later watched Rambo 3 and lo and behold, Rambo played the game (and won) while getting friendly with the Afghanis who eventually saved his ass.

The Egyptian version, of course, being the anti-West Muslim Brotherhood. I'm worried about that as well.

I have a friend who made a comment about that. Riots in France, then Egypt, when will it happen in the US?

Sadly, the right to assemble peaceably does not include the right to bear arms.

@ CA = What do you mean soon? And where? Canada, USA, Mexico or even further south? We are a riot, we have it all and are the envy of the world. :( Except that your ISP sucks, but hey - move :D

My plasma TV looks really good in a dark room. I've been watching it with the lights on this whole time. Think I might try watching stuff in the dark.

If anybody cares, here is an imageshack album with my vintage bicycles in; http://img689.images...g/phot0070.jpg/

There is a BSA All-Weather (My favorite) and a Raleigh Tourist, both from around the late 1920's, these are what I ride around on. There is a 1950's BSA in the background of some images which is only there for size comparison due to the fact that it is slightly larger than most bicycles today, as you can see, the older cycles dwarf it, it is nice to have a bike that is large enough for me for once.

Dunno where you get the idea that it is a fetish from :(

I have a strange fetish, but it does not involve bicycles.
