according to the traditional Chinese calendar, everyone is actually 4715
as for being 2018 - what if they were born Dec 31st? Today they would be 2017, not 2018.

Because December 31st falls on a Monday.
January 1st was also on a Monday.
Monday is the second day of the week
Since those dates are special days, anyone born on December 31st has to split the difference with their age.
Second day divided in half = 1.
They have to take 1 year off their age until that special day - the 31st.
For example, if they were born December 31st 1970.
2018 - 1970 = 48
but those special people don't get to celebrate their birthday until December 31st, because they had to split the difference.
so their age is actually 47 right now
1970 + 47 = 2017
(it doesn't apply to people born on January 1st this year - that applied to last year - the other half of the split difference)

2018 - 30 = 1988.
If you add the year you were born to your age, you'll get 2018 again.
1988 + 30 = 2018.
There's nothing special happening here.
What Forge noticed is that this is only true after your birthday has already taken place that calendar year. Otherwise there is an off by one error.

Born 3 Dec. 1958, age 59
1958 + 59 = 2017.
Hendricks266 beat me to it.
