That is gold! Every time I see something from Jim Jefferies it is always hilarious. :whistling:

He is a comedian's comedian, and possibly my favorite next to Jim Gaffigan. His raw, unbridled Australian chaff blows political correctness out of the water like an ICBM.

Well, that sucks. I turned my back on the gaming industry long ago and every time I catch a glimpse of it, it seems to have gotten unfathomably worse.

My web server's configuration mysteriously broke a few days ago. I could restore an image (offline backups are regularly made) but I have decided to take the opportunity to execute my plans to move over to VMs and replace some worn out hardware in the server. Only spares I have, so new fans and some more RAM, probably updating the OS too. Unfortunately my fail-over broke recently and my second, DOS-based, fail-over I both can't be bothered to set up (its copy of the site is out of date) and I don't trust to run unattended on a 25-year-old power supply for such a long period of time close to so much flammable material, I never meant for it to be online unattended or for such a long time. Hopefully, nobody will miss the FTP too much and will not be concerned by my site disappearing. I hope to have the main services back in a couple of days.

Self hosting does have some disadvantages I guess, but its how I like to do things and as around 90% of what I serve is static content with few if any images, I see no reason to change. I like knowing I can do whatever I want (provided it is legal, so no piracy or anything) with the server because it is my property... Though I waste that by just having a boring blog and a shoddy driver FTP.

VPNs provide the exact same service, just with more ease and security. Plus it's always cheaper than paying the electricity bill for a computer running 24/7.

I don't see how a VPN does that, I'm talking about hosting things. VPNs don't magically change the rules of a web host.

With ~18 Watts power consumption - often less when fairly idle - I'm not really worried about the bill. Server #2 uses even less because it has no moving parts and the most power hungry component, the CPU, draws less than 5 Watts.

With VPN you literally have a computer server you just install whatever OS you want and do everything how you want.

I still don't see the advantage there, all you're doing is adding latency. The VPN won't do anything useful so far as I can see. The only reason I could see one being useful is if you were hell-bent on hiding yourself for some reason, but if someone wanted to mess with the server enough they'd do it anyway and then they'd probably de-anonymise the VPN in the process. If you were really that intent on being secretive you could move over to something like the Tor network, but who even does that? Plus it probably still wouldn't help you very much if you lived in a country with free speech in the first place, unless you were hosting something illegal - and by moving to a network like that, you'd arouse suspicion even if you were only hosting knitting tips and tricks - not to mention, who the hell is even going to find it on that kind of network. Along similar lines, if you're so concerned with security, you wouldn't bother putting it online in the first place for the reasons above; nothing is 100% secure and if someone wants in enough, especially if they are happy to risk their freedom to do it, they'll get in anyway.

I don't doubt there are cases where a VPN is useful, but for someone hosting a simple bolg and a bunch of files for MS-DOS/Windows 9X computers it would be nothing more than another stage to go wrong whilst offering no real benefits. About the worst I do is criticize things or people and even that is rare, though I was tempted at one point to create a "titties of the week" article or something simply because i could - my old host did not allow things like that.

My server has security, but I still work under the assumption that some day, someone could break into it or mess about with it. As a result the only things on there are things which are already public, aside from perhaps a few trash files if I want to move files from one machine to another or make something available to someone else, like if I was passing a test version of a map around or I knew I might want to grab some files when I'm not at home. Nothing there is anything I'd be too worried about people finding - oh, you found a half-written script for a YouTube video? You figured out my name (I would have just told you) and defaced a page I can restore in about half an hour... OK, yeah, really worth it that. It's not like I'm storing bank records or my national insurance on there.

I'm almost back online anyway, I've been testing a VM all morning and it seems to work, it should be a relatively straight forward process to move it over to the actual server and restore the website.

Get the server from a country near you if you're worried about latency.

I'm not, because the line sucks ass anyway. I still don't see why I would want to use a VPN for this kind of thing.

Just discovered that my extensions are no longer included or even free in IIS 7.5. Back to IIS 6.0 I guess.

Interesting... Where is that from? One of the characters in my book eats a similar product;
Posted Image

A crappy version of the box I made, it was supposed to look like low quality dithered printing. It is missing the label which would reveal it was packaged for a now non-existent store somewhere in the early 1980s as well as the asterisk for the "Uranium Free*" both of which would be on the back of the box, this is just the front, sides and bottom. The Uranium Free claim states on the back "According to reclaimed Cold War Geiger Mueller units." or something to that effect, I'd have to drag that image out to be sure. Whilst I am unsure the Romanized translations from Russian are at all accurate, I don't think I'd change them if they weren't, I actually like the idea that the guy who translated it for the box in the company's (Otvratitel'nyye Produkty) desperate attempt to capture the foreign market (as it was undoubtedly not selling well in its native land either) had no idea how to speak English and thus failed to correctly translate his native tongue to it properly. Whilst never written in the book (only the box is described vaguely) I like to think the 'food' is made from recycled cardboard boxes, Soviet propaganda leaflets and posters and whilst it does not contain any Uranium (at least, according to the reclaimed equipment), it probably does contain copious amounts of ink, glue and staples. The origin of the product is never specified either and the character mistakes it as being from Kazakhstan. For the Russians here; I felt kind of bad for landing Russia with having produced this horrible cereal, so later in the book the character makes use of Russian computer technology because he believes it to be the most reliable option. The book has plenty of dialog where the characters criticize things from England (things which are actually real or have their root in reality) anyway, so it isn't that bad.

Let me get this straight, Stairway To Heaven came out in 1972 or something, and in 2014 someone noted similarities to their on work? How slow can you get? Did they never listen to the song (Stairway to..) until 2014 or did they finally find a good layer? Posted Image This smells like greed or in need for some extra cash.
