So my Windows XP suddenly stopped working and I installed Windows 7.

There is some bullshit about "admin permissions" (aka you are the owner of the computer and cannot access it) that prevents me from opening folders. So Windows 7 failed at the most basic level of an operational system, that is opening a folder.

yeah. win 7 is solid, but it has so much bullshit that needs to be tweaked to make it easier to use.
they lock it up tighter than Viper's butthole to keep the end user from screwing things up. they assume everybody is computer illiterate.

you have to take ownership of all those locked folders manually and one at a time. annoying.

It will take a time to get used to it, and there are annoyances that you will never get rid of. In the other hand it´s much faster than XP in many ways (not all). I recommend you installing Classic Shell and moving your files to a folder within your documents that isn´t libraries. Libraries (unless you have one century of free time to customize them) are the worst shit that human history had to live after Hiroshima´s atomic bomb.

The problem with libraries in Windows 7 is that they are forced on your files. After moving your "my documents" folder to your W7 drive, they will be re-sorted in new folders. my documents/my music will be moved to userdata/my music and a hardlink will be created as placeholder of your old folder -the same applies to many other common folders-. The main problem I see with this is that it keeps thinking that i need Windows to chose the best way to sort my files and add the details Windows thinks are more relevant for these folders. One instance I specially hated (and why i looked for a way to disable libraries) is that my mod project folder has tons of subfolders named numerically so i can sort them by name, within those folders i have sets of files of which i want specific sorting methods: folders with images that i want as details and by chronological order; folders with images that i want to display as thumbnails, etc. Windows doesn´t care about this it will ALWAYS force thumbnails in folders that have mostly images, it will ALWAYS set a set of unuseful tags for your music folders which contain stupid rows as "collaborative performers" or "producer" and will hide the most common tags as filesize or format.

Doesn´t matter how many times you set those back, Windows will always re-sort and arrange them as it thinks it´s better. Also it always put the most recently used files on top, no matter your preferences.

I understand that, in a world of idiots, it´s always better to save them from making choices and ease their path as much as possible, so they can make a facebook post or upload a video with their vacation pictures without much trouble. But I consider myself smart enough to know what I want to do with my files and folders and relugtantly refuse to cede on Windows or Google the way I do things. I use my computer for modding mostly, i have everything that is in between me and modding to work as fast as possible so I don´t spend time with stupid shit like intuitive shit software that pretends to know what i want to do.

Only issue I have with Windows 7 is the permissions.

You need permission from an administrator to delete this folder. I *am* an administrator!

I guess then I was lucky that my Windows XP stopped working, so I didn't thought of upgrading it.

The permission are a pain in the ass, worst of all they keeps popping up despite not working to properly prevent someone else from messing up with my computer. But you don't have to worry about drives or Internet configuration, that was a downside of XP. And the separation of program files in the (x86) folder is interesting.

A few months back I discovered a bit of a work around for the permissions thing though. Not sure if this works on Home Premium, but it does with Professional or Ultimate. If you enable the Administrator account by going to Computer Management (compmgmt.msc) > Local Users and Groups > Users, this account seems to be immune to those pesky pop-ups which keep happening. Weird, even though my account is apart of the administrators group, it won't let me do certain things. I recall not being able to delete a folder because I wasn't an admin (as above), so I logged onto the "super-admin" account and I managed to get rid of it. Weird stuff.

Supposedly this is the most dangerous thing you can do for your computer's security, but honestly I should do this myself, because it's starting to get annoying being an administrator on my PC and not being able to edit my own files.

just use the normal admin privileges for your account and take ownership of all the locked files and folders.

I only turned the account on to delete the folder I was having issues with, then I turned it off.

go to your user account in the control panel and shut off that annoying User Account Control bullshit. install your own security software.

Downgraded my Firefox to 28, because the newer versions were giving me too much trouble. I try to open it, and it would say "Firefox is already running, but not responding". With a fresh install. Never had this issue before I upgraded to 29+.
