^^ Depends on what county you're living in in the US.

Our county has removed some of the silly blue laws that prevented alcohol sales on Sundays (Christian influence kept the law in place for a long time, right up until a year ago). We still have laws that forbid open-container alcohol possession out in the open, though.

And yes buying things like condoms is very award when dealing with a person, even at an automatic one, as there is always someone overseeing everything....... but not that'd I'd know anything about that of course ;)

Want awkward? Try buying them at 2 A.M. at a campus store and being the only customer.
Nothing left to the imagination there!

I don't see how the ability to get laid and be responsible about it is awkward, but okay.

Even if the checkout person is a fat, ugly, young virgin who's probably never going to get laid? (obviously this is an extreme scenario). It's true that there's no reason to be embarrassed or ashamed or any word that you can think of, but emotions tend to be irrational.

The source of the awkwardness is probably due to both people thinking the same thing, then both knowing that they're both thinking the same thing; that the condom buyer is going to get it on. And then trying not to imagine the condom buyer naked and having sex. Tell me I'm not the only one who has these thought patterns Posted Image

I personally don't understand why either party would be embarrassed. It's something people have done for millions of years... In fact, it's how we got here right now (except me, I was manafactured by a machine. ) - what image does that thought put into your head?

Well I like them more because it's much quicker then using one with a working employee, because in my country at least, they insist (and in fact are trained) on asking you 10,000 questions, how your day was, and what your planning on doing

I probably wouldn't even buy at places like this. I don't like people at work asking casual bullshit let alone some clerk I've never seen before.

You should try going to a sex shop.

I'm sure all the cashiers that will be out of a job will appreciate that.

I'm sure you understand we're in a global economic downturn, and the last thing we need is a higher unemployment rate and more people making use of subsidizing social welfare programs that put an even greater burden on the overly-burdened middle class.

By the way, fuck that hyperbole. There's a difference between having machines that can produce more product, and just not wanting to pay people to man a machine. There is no increase in effeciency between automatic check outs, and regular check outs. Businesses simply want to be able to hire fewer, and fewer employee's. Instead of needed five check out clerks, they can hire two assistants.

I've recentle been rummaging around an old Music Shop / Computer Shop that has fallen victim to the economy. In a bid to help the owner out (I don't know the guy, nor have I met him, I know his friend though.) I got to look around and remove things I wanted.

I have been several times now and today was the last time. I think I've done alright so far, I've accuired around 50 hard drives, 8 computer systems and loads of other crap. Around 50 sound and NIC cards too, I just chucked the whole box into the larger box I was removing. I also got a coat, hat, some shades and a pink mini-fridge.

I'm currently trying to get hold of this though. Things seem promising as this is in my living room right now;

Reckon that will look nice on the wall... or in the window. I can't find another one of these on the net. My friend also got a Tango fridge, apparently number two-hundred-something of around 400 (according to the label) with only a blown interior light, I have a spare bulb of the required type, so he can have that.

I also accuired a 16U 19" cabinet. Home-made and wooden it may be, I was meant to be having a 10U one that was steel, but some bugger took it (hence we took his fridge and computer as compensation. ) so I decided to have this one, I'll just paint it black and make a perspex door after re-enforcing it.

I'm starting to think my brother may be indoctrinated. He doesn't question anything and just believes what he's told. I tried to bring up the idea of a 20 hour work week because as technology advances that we won't have to work as much. Heck I read somewhere that stores would be automated in the next 20 years, so the job I have now would be obsolete. They won't even have cashiers or price checkers. You just walk through a scanner, and it automatically pays for your stuff out of your bank account. For example, in the early 1900s, people worked 60 hours a week, now they work 40 hours a week. He still thinks people are going to be working 40 hours a week in 50 years because that's what he's been brought up to believe. He's never questioned it.

I'll bet he would like that old song from the late 60's or early 70's called "In the year 2525" or something like that.

Which is entirely their prerogative and their right. Businesses should not be mandated to hire employees that are not necessary. Fiscally conscious individuals are always concerned about the bottom line in their budget; businesses are no different.

I just wish they'd hire as many cashiers as they have check out lanes. Goddammit that is enraging.

So they'll have same effeciency with lesser work force which looks like an increase in effeciency of business as a whole. Or should they hire more people just for the sake of it?

TARGET; 35 LANES. ONLY THREE ARE OPEN. I hate it when they have self-check outs, but never turn them on, ever.

If it wasn't for Jeff's post I wouldn't noticed that either. Can't really understand how would that make me mentally handicapped, although I can relate to you for being an idiot for asking that.

Wow. So am I the only one who, when September starts, remembers that "oh in 10 days it'll be X years since 9/11"? Are you guys seriously that forgetful or do you not pay attention to dates at all?

I'm honestly asking - I'm just completely flabbergasted that it would take you until halfway the day to realize "oh right, that thing was 11 years ago today".

Actually it's not that surprising. I'm an American and I was about as shocked and angry about the attacks as anyone, and yet honestly I didn't even realize what day it was until I looked at the news this morning.

I was in first grade during the attacks. I was upset because we were supposed to have an open house that night and the elementary school canceled it.

Just when I saw the word retarded I kind of thought of it as an insult or sorts because it was directed at me.

Then I immediately thought to check the rules:

- Respect other members
- Do not troll--do not post inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages.
- You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this bulletin board to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, hateful, harassing, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any applicable laws.

All I'm saying is sometimes use a better choice of words other than "mentally retarded" or it can come across the wrong way to someone. If the person does have a slight social disability (autism), it can be seen as an insult. Then the person is going to get defensive because of it.
