Or because director have a different opinion about some scenes now, instead of then, which is bullshit. And what Lucas is doing is not a "director's cut", he simply changes scenes, not adding something because studio didn't allow him to. Either way, there should still be original version released. ME3 will provide that, so you can decide for yourself how to play/view.
I'm actually a lot less pissed off by them adding content so long as it's very conservative (like, showing how the Normandy rescues the squad members left on Earth and then takes off or something) than by them caving in to pressure. This is a matter of principle, not content. It's like Comedy Central censoring South Park to appease Muslims.

If they were so willing to give into pressure then perhaps they also thought the ball was dropped on the ending. Had they believed in the ending they wouldn't have give in.
I think the problem is that video games are not as much under the control of one person as movies or books are. Someone less interested in the ending than pleasing raging fans may overrule someone who thinks otherwise.

That is not the problem people have with the ending. If they had ended it à la Star Wars or LotR with celebrations, weddings and blown up Death Stars the raging crowd would be silent now. It'd have been extremely lazy but the raging crowd would've had no trouble with it. They're spoiled little shits.

In the case of Lucas, and in my opinion Spielberg but to a lesser extent, he is just an idiot. He's not a great filmmaker. He got lucky and had a decent idea, and he had people around him who made the films better. The prequels saw immense control from Lucas, much more than he had on the original films, and they are terrible. However, you can see how Lucas' control affects the films by comparing Empire to Jedi. Empire saw the least amount of involvement from Lucas, and is arguably the best film of the series. While Jedi saw his highest amount of influence, which you can see by the funny little cute characters like Ewoks. The dude is a total hack and he wouldn't be where he is today if other people hadn't countered his bullshit tacky filmmaking in the past. It's just the best way I can put it, I mean THX-1138 is a great idea, but a shitty film, and American Graffiti is just garbage.
I think the obvious problem with the prequels was that they were just like the original three. It's just that what seemed cool and new back then seems silly and childish now.
And THX-1138 sucks.
