I thought Macs were supposed to "just work"...well, fuck you, Steve Jobs. Why the hell do you have to ask for disk 2 even though all of the nonessential packages are not being installed? Fuck you and your fucking dysfunctional computers. I hope Jobs dies and brings Apple to hell with him where he will have to install Mac OS X Tiger on a G5 Mac without disk 2.

I was a bit sad to see the Microsoft store at my local mall completely EMPTY while the Mac store was booming. Even the Sony store was doing okay.

What do you mean by again? Europe is in trouble since the dawn of time, and the US cannot afford borrowing for social crap 'justice' either. Yes, this time around a lot of people will get hurt. Posted Image

Well ever since the GFC began a few years ago, Australia has been fairly unaffected. We have a relatively small debt, which is easily able to be paid off, and our unemployment is at about 4% IIRC. But now in the news they're talking about these large drops in Australian shares, and it sounds like it's America's fault.

It is the US fault! They had been cautioned by other governments to stop financing their Ponzi Schemes way back when Carter started the social crap mania. Now, I may be wrong, but we are witnessing the beginning of the end of western socialism.

Actually, it was FDR, not Carter. Carter just continued what FDR, LBJ, and others started. The collapse of the world market isn't the US' fault...it is the fault of the idiot who put trust in the US in the first place.

In order to save me a ton of time tomorrow at work, does anyone know a way to download a list of files via command line? I can't install anything because I am not an admin (it is on my list of demands and eventually I'll take hostages).

I have a list of 186 wmv files on a media streaming server that I need to download, convert to flv, and then upload through cyberduck to an amazon server. I could do it through a Mac also and that may be a better idea since I have to use the Mac to upload them later. Of course, one thing at a time so if there is an easy solution on Windows 7, I'll take it.

Wget is the command-line downloader. You should be able to quickly whip up a batch script to download them all. You should use a text editor that can utilize line endings in find or replace to insert "wget.exe " before each line of your list of URLs.

Here is a statically-linked version Windows version: http://users.ugent.be/~bpuype/wget/
For other OSs it should be easy to find because it's a GNU utility.

Users shouldn't have administrative privileges. Period.

About your problem. http://teusje.wordpr...ith-powershell/
That's assuming you have PowerShell installed on PC. Which is possible since it is included in Windows Updates and is built-in in Win7, I believe.

Thanks for the link to an exe. I looked around and couldn't find a wget for Windows or some other downloader that I didn't have to install.

I'm an employee (albeit "student" but graduate student) and it is a work computer. I should be allowed to install things I need to complete my job in an easier way. I am not about to manually download 186 files. If I can get a script or an application that does it for me while I do other tasks (of which I now have several for tomorrow), I would rather do that. There comes a point where you have to decide if you want things done quickly or overprotectively. I'd rather do things quickly than muddle through loops put there by grouchy administrators who don't understand. I worked for 4 years previously with virtually untethered access to get the job done. I had keys, passwords, and administrative rights on my own work computer. It is frustrating to go from that type of work environment as a student to a highly restrictive one as a graduate student who is supposed to have more responsibilities etc.
Sorry for the rant. :) You are right, regular users in a lab environment should not be allowed to install things; this just isn't that environment.
I'll look into that solution. I think Hendricks' solution will work better but it is nice to know that is an option.

I've been told by my supervisor that if I find a way to do this at home (where I can install stuff) I can let him know about the hours. I'll sniff around but I may not even be able to access the files off campus. If I can write the script, however, I can start it at 9 tomorrow morning, get some other tasks done and then start the batch conversion to flv before lunch (ideally, depending on how long it takes to get done). I could complete the whole thing in one day with a working script. That would be good.

Actually, I just learned that wget does not support mms protocol and unless I figure out how to do it on the Mac when I get to work tomorrow morning, I can't get wgetPro (some branch on SourceForge) to build. There has got to be a way to do it on Mac (I now know I have to do it on the Mac since I can't transfer it. This is 186 wmvs that are upwards of 400 megs each. That's a lot of gigs)...

They should just ditch capitalism because obviously people don't know how to manage money properly. Or at least fix it where a single economy doesn't affect the rest of the world. For example, if the US's economy is in the toilet, everyone suffers.

Now that I have Microsoft Office, I can finally think about starting my course I was planning on taking. Starting with Microsoft Excel Intermediate, since they said the Introduction course I would learn stuff I already know anyways. I'm planning on looking into some office jobs. and I need training or at least proof to an employer I can do the job. This helps me do that. Oh and I saved myself $125 because the salesman sold me the product key only package, which was cheaper. I told him I was a student and was wondering if they had any discounts, which some places do. It was only supposed to be sold with a new computer with preloaded Office 2010, however, he said just download the trial version and put in the license key.

IT team should install software you need if it is indeed needed for your job.

You are still working on a PC they support in their network/domain infrastructure. If anything goes wrong with a PC they should be the ones to fix it. That's why normal users shouldn't have administrative privileges.

If anyone at my work asks my supervisor to grant administrative privileges for him then I'll be sure to tell that I won't touch PC if anything goes wrong. Although, since I held my ground when supervisor(and other guys in department) wanted administrative privileges for his normal/everyday user account I think I'll be able to hold my ground in another situation. :)

And I could support my own system. I would rather have a job in a different part of the department, the part that fixes things, but instead I am working in the video production part so I am stuck. I got used to being part of the tech support staff and fixing things as they came up so it is hard for me to move lower down the totem pole. Of course, my end goal, career wise, is not in tech support, but I am here now and I am Dell certified and I have years of experience in the field...they just aren't hiring part time right now.

Addendum:
Actually, from a security perspective, either some admin rights or someone to update flash and other security things is needed. I can't update Flash, something we use all the time in this office. That is a small problem. Of course, the computer was asking me to restart to finish updating so I figure they have the Windows Updates set as an exception..of course, you never know, it might ask me for a password to do that.

I'm selling off a couple of Duke related items and I thought I'd give you guys the chance to get them first before I throw 'em up on eBay.

Probably going to be getting rid of the following:

1 copy of Duke Nukem 3D 1.3D in retail box
1 copy of Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition in retail box
2 ReSaurus Duke Nukem figures in unopened package
1 ReSaurus Night Strike Duke figure in unopened package
1 ReSaurus Octabrain figure in unopened package
1 ReSaurus Battlelord figure in unopened package
1 ReSaurus Pigcop figure in unopened package

Anyone have any interest?

And no, before anyone asks, I'm not getting rid of my collection of Duke stuff, just selling off some extras.

How much, do accept checks from Canada and obviously include shipping charges in the quote.

I dunno, what can you offer? I have some numbers in mind but I don't wanna come up with some figure that's a bunch more than anyone thinks it's worth. It's opened of course but the box is in good condition. I can't accept checks but I take PayPal (which makes it shit simple to suck money out of your bank account). I have no idea how much shipping to Canada would be... I got something from Canada recently and the shipping wasn't obscene so I guess it won't be that bad.
