When I was out in Ontario a couple years ago visiting family that I haven't seen in 20 years, I had to go from my usual internet speed to 1 Mbps download. It was quite shocking, but I guess when you live in the middle of nowhere, you kind of have to make do with the kind of internet you can find.

Still have to remember though, at one time I was using a 14K modem, which is even slower than 1 Mbps. I guess with these internet speeds of today you kind of forget what it was like before the internet exploded into what it is today. Back in the 1990s it was quite different than it is today. Speeds of 14K weren't a big deal back then, but now I probably couldn't handle going back to something like that.

I have 16 GB of RAM. Mainly use it for a RAM drive.

You know, down the road RAM will replace SSDs as the storage of choice. Kind of how SSDs replaced hard drives. RAM is insanely fast

SSDs haven't replaced hard drives. As for using RAM as a storage... SSD is costly, but SDRAM is even more so.

Just like with anything though, everything comes down in price eventually.

I'd admit they haven't completely replaced hard drives, but with them being cheaper, people are using SSDs for an OS drive. Maybe not for storage. Kind of forgot about that.

Cleaned out some old SATA cables from my case. I decided to move some of my hard drives over to my other computer and use that as a file server of sorts. There is a lot more room for airflow now.

SSDs are miles away as yet, it's much cheaer to use mechanical drives. What I did (and my friend followed) was to buy two WD Black drives (2TB) for around £100 each and run them in RAID0, it'll keep up with most SSDs. The Price/Performance/Capacity ratio makes SSD nothing more than an expensive novelty at the present time.

I am going to convert my Pentium MMX 233 to take an IDE-to-CF though as 8GB CF cards are cheaper than 20-year-old hard drives and likely more reliable.

Cats are relatively easy to handle compared to dogs. They live almost on their own, while dogs you must take care of like a child.

Yep. Very little maintenance. Aside from cleaning the litter box, feeding or watering, I don't have to do anything. Well aside from maybe watching a bit of TV with Cosmo. Something he likes to do with me. He'll sit there and when the show is done and the TV turns off, he immediately jumps off.

Cosmo is like the son I never had. Some people sometimes refer to their pets as their kids. In a way, I am his father, and he is my son. He hasn't really gotten attached to anyone besides me.

They are good pets, but dogs are simply better after you spend some time properly training them ...

Most people have no idea about how to train a dog. So the chances are that the dog will piss in the house and damage furniture more than a cat.

Cats will only piss in the house if you don't train them properly. Cosmo always finds the litter box with no issues. Or sometimes if their litter box is really dirty, they don't want to use it. That might be the issue.

As for clawing up furniture, you can put stuff like aluminum foil and such to try and deter the cat from doing it. They hate the sound and it scares them.

Like I said, cats like to be clean. So if the litter box is dirty, it would be like a human trying to use a toilet which is all plugged up. I certainly wouldn't want to use that. Neither would the cat.

For me with dogs, I guess I'm not big on maintenance either. Walking them every day, plus a bunch of other things. Cats pretty much exercise themselves. Give them a toy to play with and they'll keep occupied for hours. Cosmo likes toy mice or string the best. I also have these foam balls he bats around.

Domesticated cats are trained to find litter boxes. One of the reasons I take grown-up cat is because it knows that stuff.

the initial cost will be high, but if you acquire the kind with recyclable litter, it will pay for itself over time

some cats like water some don't. fill your bathtub with warm water, put on some swim trunks (for your protection), hold your cat in your arms and climb in, gently try to set the cat in the water (prepare to be scratched)
no big deal if the cat doesn't like water - they're pretty good at taking care of their own hygiene. I'd recommend brushing out once or twice a month though, to avoid having it cough up hairballs.

they can be picky about what they eat. thanks to my wife leaving her bowl unattended on the coffee table i now know what flavors of ice-cream my cat likes and dislikes
they can mess up furniture if they get bored - get a scratch post, make sure it has toys to play with, and you can get this spray that humans can't smell, but cats hate and put a little around the corners of the furniture
