So it basically comes down to training? How long do you need to tend after a kitty before it grows?

I still think I'm gonna regret it. The cat will be bored to tears during the day thus will try to entertain itself. Curiosity will result in scratched stuff or something.

Yeah pretty much, and just like people some cats are smarter than others, if you get a very young cat it will learn your ways soon enough, they grow fast.

I can't remember how long to train (it's kind of ongoing, cats will do what you let them get away with) there is litter training that lasts for a few weeks, cats are clean they don't like to piss where they live as they are naturally stealth creatures, but they will "scent" your garden if you have one.

Male cats if not neutered can be stinking, just make sure the cat gets the "snip" when the time comes.

Cats don't get bored they just sleep or go out hunting, or annoy you for food and attention. All in all very low maintenance. I don't know how a cat will respond to being indoors all the time though, I'm sure they would not like that. They like to get out to kill things at night.

The can leave hairs on your bed and couch though (not the short haired cats though) and that annoys some people, I don't care.

I you want to get one any local pound will have loads of kittens of the right age, and you can Google anything you need to know about them after.

Cats sleep at least 16 hours a day. I don't think that'll be an issue.

Cats are indeed quite low maintenance, they only need you to open doors ;)

What garden? You mean flowers? I don't have any. But I have discs, open turntable, vinyls which are the main concern.

Should get a female then. Damn, I just realised I would need to have some medical crap go through with a kitty.

It's pretty normal here for cats to be indoors all the time. I don't remember any of my acquaintance letting their go out "to kill things at night".

I don't think that's the right approach. You can't just throw away it when you understand "it's not for you". That's why I evaluate my options. I wanted to have a crow, but after reading about the mayhem their cleverness and curiosity would cause I refused rather quickly.

Well I had cats before I had the internet, they are easy to look after. I'm just saying that it's a bonus that the information is out there so it helps, but you are right as looking after another life is not something that should be done without consideration.

I had a crow for 2 years it was pretty cool, it used to sleep on my curtain rail (and shit everywhere). One day it flew off and never came back, I found him with a broken wing and he stayed for a good while even when he was better.
The cats were not a problem they were terrified of him. Very smart animal, liked music, had no cage used to just fly around the house, people thought I was nuts.

I don't think a cat would like to be kept indoors all the time no more than a bird would like to be caged, or a fish bowled but nobody cares what fish think as they don't have any feelings.

My girlfriend had a parrot (cockatiel) for 17 years. She was intelligent and fun (for the almost 2 years I knew her). She was kept flightless for safety reasons (I assume something about flying into open flames or windows or anything that might hurt a bird). Birds like parrots and crows are really intelligent and I think they can be good pets; they certainly are less messy than cats and most dogs. Sure, they shit everywhere, but it washes out and doesn't smell at all. I'm not sure about cost of keeping them compared to cats or dogs though. I am told that birds (at least Ruby, the cockatiel) treat their cage like a bed room rather than a house.

My roommate has 2 cats and they are rather lazy except when they want something. I am at a point of apathy towards cats. I like dogs and I am beginning to like birds (good thing too, the woman is planning on getting another parrot over the summer since Ruby died in March).

My roommate makes comments about "good thing I had the cats taken care of (neutered/spaded) young" because the female in heat apparently would be something awful. Cats are cuddly, but they leave their fur everywhere.

I've had my cat for half a year now and it hasn't left a shed of hair anywhere. The only annoying things it does is sit and stare at me and rush outside to play in the dirt. As well as try to hump my arm :|

I had a parrot who was flying all over the place, but not outside of course. Crows supposedly could be 'walked' without much problem since they won't try to fly away, but I'm not sure about parrots. It probably depends.

As for letting cat go outside by itself... I don't see a simple way to get it back in the appartment if it's not into waiting several hours in front of a door.

Perhaps different breeds of cats shed different amounts. I know that a Shi Tzu has hair instead of fur so it never sheds which makes it a perfect "purse dog" (besides its small size and quiet demeanor). The male cat I live with has long black fur and leaves a trail; the female is white and sheds a little less.

There are outdoor and indoor cats.

My cat is the best. Ya'll ain't got shit on Katie. Sweetest cutest animal ever. She loves me like a dog loves their owner. Also, she sheds like a mother fucker.

The last one isn't a cat.

Don't be a pussy, she doesn't bite. You're way more likely to get bit by a puppy than a Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula. Besides, the bite is like a bee sting, and she always warns and gives you a chance to back off (which rarely happens).

Yeah, Rose Hairs and Pink Toes are both pretty docile. Cobalt blues, on the other hand...

You couldn't pay me to hold a cobalt blue, let alone an OBT.

I wanna get a chaco golden knee (g. pulchripes) and a mexican red knee next.

Old World tarantulas are a pain in the ass.

I've never been stung by a bee though so I am always fucking terrified of that happening. ;)

How the hell is that possible? Just pick up a bumblebee and get over with it. They are slow as fuck.

I love bees. If you treat them with respect, move slowly, and don't attack them, they won't bother you. I let them land on me. I haven't been stung since I was a kid running around fields bare foot.

Bees are cool. Wasps suck ass. I was in Sequoia National Park and I got stung by some kind of paper wasp.

It hurt for three days and I still have a scar from the insane, week long itch fest that was ground zero.

I remember being stung by one back when I was around 21 or so. Somehow managed to get a bee's nest in my house. Anyways, it kind of feels like a sharp razor blade or something. Really hurts.

Well, I haven't cut myself with a razor blade either but I see where this is going anyway.

I guess I should mention that both my parents get allergic reactions to bee stings which is also another part of my fear.

It's not that painful. But it depends on a depth of course.

my cat is a permanent indoor cat. she's fine because that's what she's used to. when i do let her outside she won't go more than twenty feet from the door and the only things she really wants to do when she is outside is to go roll around in the dust on the sun heated patio and drink water out of the rain bucket.

i'm the bee whisperer. all members of the bee, wasp, hornet, etc. family are attracted to me for some reason. If i sit still long enough i'll have them crawling all over me.
they get pretty aggressive about wanting to land on me despite my efforts to shoo them away. most of the time i just let them land so they can check me out then i shoo them off once they're satisfied i'm not what they thought i was. (flower, dead corpse, who knows what)
i've only been stung a few times my entire life and that's because i either stepped on one barefoot, knelt on one that was hiding in the tall grass, and grabbed one when i was picking logs out of a wood pile.

Why not get an adult cat from an animal shelter?

I have 2 castrated male cats, not that big of a deal. Females would also need to be sterilized if they're outdoor cats... otherwise you're gonna end up with a lot more cats than you bargained for.

Haha yeah one of my cats is black too i'm not racist

My cat only goes outside if we (meaning family) are outside as well, even then he's scared of pretty much everything outside including the wind... so when it gets windy he panicks and wants to go back in. So uh, yeah he likes to be kept indoors...

I didn't even know we had a shelter. But I'm still not into grown ups.

Hmmm, shelter have cats and other stuff. But I wonder if I have an allergy cause, well, I remember having it around some cats. But maybe it was more like dust related and not animals themselves.

One thing about shelter is that you can come in and say "give me the most boring and lazy cat".

Well the thing is if you get a kitten it'll also grow up eventually so that makes no sense

I think you guys really overestimate the amount of time and care an average cat requires.

(note I'm not saying just leave it to itself and let it rot but it's not like a dog that wants almost constant attention)
