Big boys are dominating games, not killing it. Just like in the movie and music industries. If you want to make a profit, you need to study a bit how business works, make a boring business plan and work the plan. One can complain all one wants, things will not change. You either get the finances or produce a unique game people want to play, and then get a good distributor at least. Being a proud indie is great, but if you have a super game, swallow the pride and cash in, and let those with finances share the profits a bit. Driving a sports car ain't bad nor a house with a private pool, OK so you did not do it all by yourself, so what. :D

Developers don't get that shit. The management at the publishing firm do. Everyone else is shit all over.

And the bean counters in the firms control the creative process.

I don't understand? Developers don't know how to make a business plan, or get run over?

I say, the idea is to make a profit, so yes, you will need to be able to deal with the bean counter. But just like making models, programming, sound fx and so on, that too is learn able. It's called negotiating and making concrete contracts to begin with. And just like making games, it ain't not easy. :D

That reminds me. Probably more than a year ago someone here promised I would get some chocolate chip cookies for helping them with their problem. I don't remember who it was. Fess up and bake those cookies.

Developers don't usually get rich, they get by. The exception to that being (sometimes) the management/high level staff at the development studio. At this point I can only assume ignorance on your part or the desire to not have an honest discussion.

Define rich?
We have Rockstar right up from my office; and another one up north, Streaming colour who make games for children. Both are succesful within their own goals.

Define discussion? If you think I am ignorant or dishonest, that's cool, but it sort of closes a door. :D

Developers in this case = individual developers (within or not within a larger development organization/company/firm). The entire business might be successful but the individual developers are not necessarily financially successful (especially when factoring in hours worked). Additionally the publisher has a large amount of control over the actions of the development company. Some developers (eg: Rockstar) are fortunate in that they are old enough and were successful enough early on to be given leeway/deference by their publisher.

Quote

discussion
[dih-skuhsh-uh n]

noun
1. an act or instance of discussing; consideration or examination by argument, comment, etc., especially to explore solutions; informal debate.

I don't know how to double quote, so Mblackwell first.
Yes. As I wrote before it ain't not easy or simple. This is why I suggested making a business plan first, to see if it is for you(in the third person). Long hours are nothing new though. When I first started in Consulting, I worked 20 hours per day, and had a small apartment with mice and cockroaches as my best friends. It may be my ignorance here, but I would expect long hours to develop a new game, also. Not sure when the publisher takes control over the developer. There must be some sort of contract in place by then, I am guessing when the publisher funnels some funds to the developer. As for Rockstar, sorry I could not resist mentioning them, they are not your average developer :D

@Comrade Major - yes, good article. At least it should discourage some from entering this business blindly. My only lament is that in this article only publishers are in for the profit. While obviously true, here is an archaic report about where the all the cash from gamers go.

I think saying I went to a jobsite is pretty normal actually. Yet posting silly images of things you wouldn't do is regular OIO well for you I know it is. But I do wish somone hit me with a board man that would be fun like the time someone hit me with a baseball bat. We will just say I had a better day then him thats for sure.

Sorry and probably best staying out of duke 4 for a little bit since I like to be provoked and I will probably respond like an asshole I don't have any specific problem towards you. I think your pretty funny actually. Well see ya around.

I´d put my bet on a video card failure.

I was about to make a snarky "no shit, Sherlock" reply, but then realized that I never made a post here stating I had ordered a new video card for that system.

The new video card doesn't work which is what I was illustrating. The reason is most likely, due to the pattern, one of the two RAM chips that are installed.

I don't have the tools or skill to work with SMD really.

I'd put my bet on his computer belonging in a museum.

The irony being that that video card is probably more powerful than the one from the 2006 laptop I am using to write this message. Has the same amount of RAM (2MB MAX) but unlike the laptop, actually has GUI and Video acceleration onboard.

Laugh all you want, I still get shit done with nothing more than a machine from 1998.

Edit: And I have learned how to remove the memory chips without damaging the board and surrounding components. Now I need to figure out how to put a new one on... Well, two as I will need to replace both.
