Time for an X-Files update. Season 2. This is just the HD broadcast master. The Blu-ray master hasn't been made yet. If you zoom in on the comparison screenshots, the difference is astronomical compared to the DVDs. There is a pattern on Mulder's suit that was not there on the DVD (bottom screenshot).

In episode 8 of Pawn Stars ("Time Machines"), a guy brings an old coke machine, which according to him, has been on his family for generations but he doesn't have room for it, so he decides to sell it. Then Rick Harrison takes it to Rick Dale to restore it.

Except that it's not the same machine. They are of different models, a Vendo 39 and a Cavalier 79.

Ignoring the coke machine problem, a few seasons later, the spin-off American Restoration reveals that the seller is an enployee of Rick Dale and his brother.

I'm still not convinced that "protected for widescreen" guarantees it will work flawlessly in 16:9, it usually just means that the film crew makes sure no boom mics or other untoward objects are present in the visible area.
The upgrade in definition is fantastic though, you can even make out the stitching in Skinner's shirt collar.

There are some limitations due to the way the show was shot (initially very dark with highly atmospheric lighting contrasts and lots of haze and fog) and some Edge Enhancement creeps up in places, but overall I'm glad the grain structure is left intact and there doesn't seem to be any obvious tampering with the original colour grading of the show.

It was made in 1993, and a lot of TV shows weren't in widescreen at the time, but they knew it was coming. A show like Futurama was shot in widescreen, but cropped for 4:3 for DVD.

Keep in mind, this is not representative of the full quality. These are just syndication masters, where some people have reported that the US version is full 16:9, while the German version (these screenshots I posted) is cropped. I haven't seen any US versions of screenshots though.

Bottom line, wait until they release it on Blu-ray, then make your argument about it being cropped. I don't think they'd go through all that work of rescanning the film, supposedly to put it in true widescreen, only to end up with it being cropped.

Someone said something that there is a slight error in season 5 (which is widescreen), where you can see a prop guy handing Mulder something. Think the episode is called Bad Blood.
