EDuke32 should be able to be used as a engine for making commercial games in my opinion.

People could create 100x better projects than some of the shit I have been seeing come to early access on Steam.

Maybe there could be some deal struck that anyone doing this that a percentage of sales goes back to the EDuke32 project etc.

Then you should talk to Ken Silverman and convince him to release build with a GPL(or similar) licence.

That's a terrible idea. Having a subscription based support for an engine - maybe(which requires proper organisation), but not the license to use it. It would be any different from how it operates now, but if Ken open the gates for commercial projects then eDuke32 should remain free and open source.

There's a difference between proprietary engines and free/open source ones. The proprietary engine requires license fee because it is closed sourced and developed in-house, while open sourced engine is developed with community's direct input.

Besides, aren't there enough other free engines to make commercial games?

That's not even close of being possible. None of Eduke32 developers have any exclusive rights over it. Also it's open source and uses a Creative Commons licence.

Of course, you can make a commercial game that uses the Build engine. You just can't charge for the engine itself, but you for sure can charge for the assets (i.e. art, sounds, levels, etc). But I am not sure if you can include Eduke32 executable on it.

When I said by giving a percentage to EDuke32, I meant a percentage to who ever owns the rights etc, so Ken would be one but what ever.

I would want to use EDuke32 over Build.exe if making a commercial game.

Can't you make a game but instead have a donate option before downloading?

Btw, why would anyone besides Duke3d/Build community would want to use it? Does it have advantage over other engines? Is it even that popular?

You can't get anything released on Steam with a donate option.

The engine being popular or not is not the point, but if people were able to use the EDuke32 source code for commercial gaming it could benefit EDuke32 in the long run.

Then you'll need to find another engine. You might get your project okayed by Silverman, but it won't do eDuke32 itself any good. I don't know, write to Ken and ask whether he'll change build's license.

Who would use it? I am all for a making a profit, but I can't see it with EDuke32. For a normal game, Unity 3D beats not only EDuke in every aspect of game development but most others engines too. To make a 2.5D game, why bother?

But there should be a donation button here in this forum. EDuke32 has high value for modders. It's is simple to get into, to make a show piece and then move up into the commercial realm, if this is what you want.

If you are going to be using Unity then why not use UDK as well.

EDuke32 could be a good engine for little indie projects that Eddy likes making.

Because Unreal comes after Unity, alphabetically sorted.

Wrong. TX and Ken (and others, I don't know the specifics) get cuts of Megaton.

Also, BUILDLIC is not a Creative Commons license. The source release predates CC's existence by a year.

Then, legally, all BUILD contributors would never necessarily see a penny again.

What's hard to understand about "if you make money from it, we get a cut"? That's compatible with being free and open source.

I highly doubt anyone besides Ken gets any cut. eDuke32 is released under GPLv2 and Megaton publishers/producers have no obligation to pay eDuke32 developers.

He won't.

It might be open source, but it's not free, because it restricts use.

Five figures says TX does get paid. He's the one who negotiated the agreement. The game source is GPLv2 but the engine source is BUILDLIC.

Free as in you don't have to pay for it to play it, use it, mod it, mess with the source, etc. Not "free" as in FOSS.

Perhaps. Then indeed they woudn't get paid if Build was released under GPL.

It's almost as if we both haven't used "free and open source" phrase in our previous posts...

Ugh, it's starting to get to me now. Still without a workstation, for anyone that follows me around, the rebuild has ended in complete disaster and dismantling is scheduled for as soon as I am no longer required for "Duke Hard" as the system is completely useless. What the hell went through Intel's mind when they put those processors on shelves is beyond me.

To make matters worse the internet is too slow to stream movies, my bicycle is off the road and I cannot afford to repair it and I've run out of porn to watch. Unusual thoughts go through your mind when you have absolutely nothing to do, you start thinking about getting a job, attempting to begin some kind of social life, I wonder what happens if I set fire to this etc... None of these options are really viable but that's the effect this is having. I'm tired of being bored, I'm tired of being lonely, tired of being single, tired of being poor and absolutely sick to death of everything right now. On the plus side, since I nearly died unpleasantly a few times the last two years I don't get suicidal anymore, i just get aggressive instead.

I had multiple incidence of this with a box of the Spongbob "warp-sickles" ... look like this could be an epidemic.

No, it hasn't. If someone is distributing EDuke32 as CC, they need to be stopped.

You may be thinking of the EDukeWiki, which is licensed as this: https://creativecomm...s/by-nc-sa/3.0/

Was 1-2 week ago the news came but couldn't find a video until now.

Scientists recently discovered yellow hypergiant star, rare type of star.
Is an extremely enormous star.
Around 39 solar masses, 1,315 solar radius and ~500,000-1,000,000 solar luminosity

The largest yellow star ever observed in our galaxy has been discovered.
An international team of astronomers found the yellow hypergiant star 12-thousand light years away from Earth.
The yellow star,... the HR 5171 A,... is 13-hundred times the diameter of the Sun,... and one million times brighter.
One of the astronomers said their observations show that the star has a binary partner... and the two stars are so close that the system resembles a "gigantic peanut."
The team used the European Southern Observatory in Chile's Very Large Telescope Interferometer to make the observations.
The yellow star is now among the ten largest stars ever discovered,... and astronomers estimate that it is 50-percent larger than the famous red supergiant Betelguese.
The findings will be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
