Duke's age

#1

Does anyone know what exact age he's meant to be? I always thought the character of Duke was meant to be around his early thirties .But I was also wondering if DNF is set 12 years after Duke3d, does that mean he's older now?,or does he stays the same as age as he was in Duke3d like a cartoon/comic book character?

Apparently, he's getting younger as time goes by...
As you can plainly see, DNF takes place after Duke 3D, yet he looks much younger. Duke was about 35-38 in Duke 3D and now he looks like he's 20...

You want a source? Here's a source for you.

He doesn't look 30 here to me. He looks more like 35-38 judging by the wrinkles on his face.

And in the 2007 teaser for DNF, he properly looked 9 years older since back in 2007 the action was taking place 9 years after DN3D because DNF was in development since 9 years at that point, which made him look 44-47.

His "Bruce Willis" look as some idiots called him, properly showed his Duke 3D face being 9 years older.
Gearbox took a shit on everything that made sense and went for much younger version of him instead of following the 12 year older version.

It's always Gearbox, Geahrbawkx, Geayrdsfkjbsdfkdbasfnkdnfkljanf...... fuck it.
Chances are it's Triptych that made the model and went with it themselves.

Also, I remember reading something about Duke being 29 in the Duke Nukem 3D canon. So, there's a possibility they were going for an appearance based on that. Being the king, and how well he's been treated since Duke3D, there's a possibility he's hardly aged in those 12 years. It also could be a metaphor of sorts.

Cover art notwithstanding, his age appearance was all over the place in Duke3D. His in-game sprite and 1st episode cinematic appearances being the youngest looking, and his cinematic appearances in episodes 2 through 4 looking the oldest.

...And where are the facts? All you've said is "I THINK that Duke looks about this old in these pictures". No facts, just assumptions. Also, GEERBAWX ain't developing the game or changing Duke, they just gave Triptych a home and funding. Sure Trip's got some helping hands, but 3D Realms is still pretty much making the game.

I was being ironic about facts in case you didn't notice... As for my assumptions about his age in Duke 3D, I think it's common sense to be able to guess the age of healthy looking person.
So I don't get what's the problem with my assumption? It's not like we were never shown a picture of him. What's the problem, do you think he looks younger/older than what I said, or what?

We haven't really had a close look at the actual ingame Duke. All the mirrors in the first level were cracked, which I assume is to hide Duke to some degree, whether it's just for the demo or for the actual game I'm not sure, but it's probably a good thing, so when Duke finally does have a good look at himself in his mansion it'll be really epic.

If you think that the 2007 Duke looks nine years older you'd better not rant about idiots but get a pair of glasses.

I strongly and viciously believe that yes.
*grabs glasses and puts them on*
Wow man, with my glasses on I can see more clearly how his 9 year older skin texture looks now.
You were right, I needed glasses to see the details of his older face.

Irony aside, yes I see the 2007 teaser version of Duke Nukem as a 44-47 year old version of him and it makes perfect sense to have him look like that for a character that's 9 years older.
I'm sorry that we don't agree but maybe one of us needs glasses who knows. If I'm the one who needs glasses then I assure you this would be the first time I need such an accessory.

Duke should be 30 something. No need to get precise. They should age him only if it's important to the story.

"What about the game, Duke? Was it any good?"
"Yeah, but after 12 fuckin' years it should be!"

Yeah I read the 29 thing somewhere too ,I guess like you said his age is a bit all over the place, I think the character of Duke is best suited to someone in their mid /late thirties.

Wasn't Bruce Willis said to be one of the influences for his older version? Like didn't George or somebody say that?

Uh...what? He's saying the game took 12 years, which means he's at least 12 years older than he was in Duke 3D. He was late 20's/early 30's in Duke 3D, so he should look early 40's in DNF.

There are two distrinct routes you can go with the character with his age. He can be timeless. Always about the same age even with time passing by... Much like James Bond has always been in flux even though the decades have passed him by.

The other, is a mortal Duke, who is getting older as time goes on. I could forsee a sequel to DNF where Duke has gone grey, and society see's him as an old relic, a has-been, and he goes on to prove them wrong in some epic showdown with the aliens on their home planet.

Gearbox/2k are likely looking at this from a marketing standpoint. Keep Duke young, so that the franchise can be rejuvinated with a whole new line of games after this.

Arnold was 40+ in Predator, Total Recall, T2. I say Duke is at least near 40 in DNF.

To me the answer is simple and nonsensical from the story/game design point:

Gearbox just used his Duke Begins model (as begins would be a prequel to DNF or DN3D) which probably had a much younger duke. Of course if they made the Duke model they would say "hey I like my model MORE than the 3DR one!"

"But...what are we going to use for Duke Begins man?"

"Kid Duke of course!"

As fucked as your theory is, I don't know why but I kind of vibrate with it for some reason.
I actually think gearbox would go that far and do such retarded shit, I don't know why I expect so much shit from them but I do...

They probably canceled Duke Begins because of the Duke model was so fucking awesome that they simply had to use it in DNF, so they decided to cancel the entire game just so they can use that model for DNF.
Makes perfect sense when it comes to the marketing department of gearbox.
