I asked this question as a way to commemorate the release of Duke Nukem Forever here: http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showt...0006&page=2

The details and ideas are there I just want to ask if anyone else thinks that a DukeCON to rival QuakeCON would be a good idea.

Conventions take a lot of money and effort. Not gonna say it isn't a good idea but i don't see it being to probable.

As far as i can tell the duke nukem fan base has really declined in the past few years, so the fan base doesn't seem big enough at the moment for such a special thing but perhaps the release of DNF will change all of that. But i doubt we'll ever see that kind of thing for years to come if at all.

True, but here it says "We have 1,441 registered members." At QuakeCON forums there are 26,792 members. Average views for every Duke video on YouTube is 1000, Say about 50 videos there are about Duke Nukem which would be 50000. That can be halved to about 25000 due to the amount of duplicates on each video there could be. Plus the the thousands that play the XBLA port of Duke3D, I'd say maybe about 10000. 80% of that would be close to the amount of non-duplicates, which would be 8000, add that to 25000 you get 33000. That's quite a bit, not a lot, but big enough to support a DukeCON. say $4 to $10 for admission, $10 * 33000 = $330000. It'd be enough to support a small DukeCON until following years for it to expand. But I still think that regardless of whether this happens, there should be Duke3D tournament the day before Duke Nukem Forever is released, and then the winner gets a free copy of Duke Nukem Forever.

Is Duke big enough to matter? I think DNF would have to be a revolutionary hit to justify such an event.

That would be cool i would go for that.

Nice math by the way.

Thanks :D. My math was very close on for my mathematical based theory thread on Duke Nukem Forever. Still, a lot of good things are happening.

Edit: One No?? :D Oh well I was waiting for criticism anyway.

What horrifically fun math!

If anyone wants to hold a Duke-con in Ireland, I'll be there.

Perhaps they missed the button :D. But i still think a duke 3d tournament (possible held by duke4.net?) would be an awesome idea

I doubt we'll see any that go beyond a pizza hut with a bunch of 15 year olds and some scattered 30 year old game nerds that still live with their parents.

We could have it in the basement hall of a local church!

Not that this point. I could see it happening in the future after DNF's release if it's successful enough, though. It darn well better be. I'm half afraid that DNF will be a big disappointment to the entire community and it'll fall under as a failed B-title launch. But I haven't played it yet...I should give it more credit, I suppose.

In order for the game to not become a B-title it would have to be an A+++ title which is definitely not.
The game seems to be a B-title and we all know it. We just don't want the new comers to notice it because that means it will be put down and future games with Duke won't be made!
I am pretty sure that no matter how this game will be, unless it's an absolute hit, it will be the last game to feature duke as the main character!!!
They made him look so fucking young and chances are that he won't even have any sequels to act in. They should have made him 50 in this game like he looked in the 2007 teaser and let him at that.
I mean look at his face on the left area of this forum's banner, he looks like he did in his picture from DN3d's background intro, they actually nailed him just right.
He looked perfect the way he was done in that 2007 teaser and then Gearbox had to turn him into a 25 year old looking dude that barely resembles him.
Not even his glasses look cool now from what I've seen in the menu of the game.
Where the fuck is his neck? His hair grows almost to his back. I mean look at him from behind he looks nothing like Duke.
And why is he younger than he was in DN3d? Is DNF a prequel or wtf lol...
Finally is it just me or does it look like his head was added after his body in that picture Photoshop Fail?

Call me crazy but if this generation of consoles wouldn't have become the main cash source for games and pc gaming would have continued evolving graphics after crysis isntead of going back, what you see in that picture would have been exactly the graphics from DNF if not 10 times better instead we are going to get the boring unreal 3 engine graphics all over again like we get in all other games out there.
I am so seriously bored and sickened by unreal engine 3. All fucking games look the same on it!

I don't want a DukeCon, Duke Nukem is more then just multiplayer after all.

Fine. It's just that the reason you gave wasn't really relevant.

If that is the case and DNF is a big failure (which would piss a LOT of people off) i hope for 2 things. 1 The failure of DNF doesn't discourage people from still playing and developing duke 3d. 2 If DNF really is a big failure i hope gearbox wont necessarily be held responsible and they'll get the chance to make a better duke game because 90% of the game was made by 3dr.

But still like you said we haven't seen the game for itself and it would be unfair to judge based on what little we know of the actual game. But some parts of the basic mechanics (2 weapon limit to name the biggest one) a lot of people aren't to crazy about. Just makes you wonder if what we haven't seen of DNF will be any good.

Yes it was, Multiplayer is a major part of QuakeCon, if Duke Con existed it might be similar to that.

to me duke match is alittle stupid cause of quiters and boosters I hope they make duke forever online better then that crappy duke nukem 3d online crap

ranking system
and host

if the host quits out of the game then the game should pick anew player that has agood server and that person should be host

I like the idea of just having servers that everyone can connect to, whether there's no one there, one person there, etc. The connection to hosts for Duke3D right now I really don't like.

It's called muscles.
Every artist drawing artworks has a different take on how something should look like. Quite frankly, it's a bit bold to claim to have exclusive rights to say how the Duke should look like.

We don't really know, and who says that game characters need to age in the same way the development time/real time does? You could come up with that claim for some many sequels out there. So when the next title gets revived from way back like Pricne of Persia, the main char has to be like a 60 years old just to satisfy your needs? Won't be a Jump n' Run but a Hop n' Amble. Nit picking, are we?

In your opinion Gearbox should scrap the existing material and replace with CryEngine?

You know what? Yeah I would! I would definitely be willing to wait even 2 more years if Gearbox told me they would do that tbh...
I have patience, I already thought this game was dead so what's 2 more years for me.
But don't worry, the game will come out on unreal engine 2 not on 3 so it will be much better... :D

Cryengine? the glorified terrain editor?

Breifly looking over it i think all buildings are pre-made models, making it as useful as a bag of sawdust at a funeral

they could release DNF and work on another duke title and have it shipped after two years - so a further delay for an engine swap would be pointless :D

I doubt Gearbox will wait another 13 years after DNF - they have the IP, they're keen on doing something with it.

I am willing to make a bet with you that if DNF fails to sell at least 500.000 copies Gearbox is going to sell the Duke brand asap!

Its basically a new engine now, it doesn't look any thing like Unreal engine 2.
