http://store.steampo...com/freeportal/

Go get it now if you don't own it! This isn't a temporary deal. It is a temporary offer, but once you buy it (for free) you own it. Even after the due date (May 24th) is passed. Go and get it now even if you're computer can't play it! Someday maybe you'll get a good enough computer so you can play it and you'll thank your lucky stars that you managed to take advantage of this incredible deal while it was free!

Those of you who don't know what Portal is....you're beyond help.

EDIT: More big news! Steam has finally been ported to Linux! There are already a few already Linux-ported games supported such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and a few id Software titles. The first Valve games to launch on Linux will be HL2, Counter-Strike Source, and Team Fortress 2.

Just start the download and then pause it for later?

I am sure that should still count as you buying for free/getting it...

Yes. You don't actually have to download it. It just links it to your Steam account when you buy it.

Does a Steam account require any software to load or any other personal info when signing up? Or is it just the usual name and password thing?

I never heard of this game - a saw a flash game called portal once and thought you were on about that but it turns out it's some 3D game on what looks like Quake's engine... but it's free? I might just have to download that, the only thing that puts me off is steam, I don't like installing spyware on my computer - but then you're stuck with that anyway now (1e100.net). What's the difference if I just torrent it.

Thanks for letting us all know anyway.

Dont know how you would torrent it as it's a Source based game so it would still need Steam to run.

I used to never like steam at first (still sorta don't) but you get used to it.
Not spyware though.

Quake's engine? Lol. It's Valve's own Source engine. Surely you've heard of Half-Life 2 and its episodes? Left 4 Dead? Team Fortress 2? Or are you being sarcastic...I can't tell.

Source was developed off the GoldSrc engine (Half-Life 1, Counter-Strike) which in turn was developed off the QuakeWorld engine (Team Fortress), which in turn was developed off the Quake engine (erm... Quake). Source games do bear a resemblance to Quake, though said resemblance is generally very slight because of all of the advancements that have been made.

It may have its roots in the Quake engine (Quake 1, that is), but GoldSource itself was heavily modified from the Quake engine and Source is even more heavily modified from GoldSource. So you can't say that Portal is a Quake engine game. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Well if Valve hasn't stopped giving away portal by now they're going to do it very soon. Don't worry though I'm sure many people have made multiple accounts and installed portal to them and would be selling them on ebay for a small fortune.

The free Portal offer is officially over. My congratulations to those who took advantage of the deal and my sympathies for those who didn't. Better luck next time.

Source may have a lot of bells and whistles on top of it, but at its core its still good ol' Quake in many many ways.

Got Portal, played it, not bad. Heh.

For anyone that wants a quick laugh, check out this thread and read all the post by idiots that tried to use aimbot/hax etc
and them try to plead there way that they didn't know or that they never used them.

Maybe, maybe, but some seem genuinely upset. It's possible there are some false positives there. (read: people who basically got ripped off)

Ripped off because they decided to *try* use an aim bot in CS or TF2 and now wonder why they can't play them online any more?
So then they thought they would go to the steam forums and make up some story that people would believe.. ahem.

No... how about "ripped off" because VAC made a false detection? It happens with virus scanners sometimes, I'm sure it happens with anti-cheat systems too.

But VAC does not use heuristic algorithms which is the source of false positives. VAC scans for only programs manually added to its database and modified game executables and dlls.

The reason some of the people get banned is because they use cheats in single player or weird things on non VAC protected servers but forget to disable them when going to VAC secured servers.

Also several of those guys that seem "legit" are often foiled when you Google their alias and find them on cheat websites and forums.

Yup, MW2 has had nothing but issues with VAC due to the fact that VAC is not a good anti cheat for that game because of the way servers are handled but Infinity Ward went that route anyways.

Also each of those accidentally banned received 2 free Left4Dead games one which they could gift to anyone they wanted.
