EDuke32 seems too fast...

#1

Great program, thank you to everyone involved, I cannot believe how perfect this looks and how well it runs!

I only have one question though,

It seems this game is running a little too fast, moving around, etc seems super-speed. Maybe it's my setup, I don't know if there's any settings I can change?

Here's my PC (well, it's a laptop)
HP HDX18t
Intel Q9000 Quad-Core
4GB Ram
Nvidia 9600GT /w 512mb
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Only with old DOS programs would someone complain about it running too fast.. and that was because old DOS programs have tasks that run based on your processor clicks (and faster processors make some games impossible to play)

What exactly is "too fast"? You may be able to adjust the mouse sensitivity. Other than that it may just be the fact that it is a fast paced game...

Well turning auto-run/run off helped...lol...and yes, I do understand the dynamics of a dos game. I was just inquiring into whether there was a setting built into this eduke program to allow you to compensate based on the CPU you do have.

I noticed that time periods treated as seconds in the game, actually last significantly less, around 0.8 seconds. Looks like the speed-up may be caused by this. However, I remember using the DOS version of Duke and it worked at the same speed. Duke's running velocity is quite fast in itself though.

eDuke32 does not have the same problem as old DOS games...but that is an interesting thing about game seconds being 0.8 seconds.

Its a fast paced arcade shooter, it isn't like the modern games where you sneak or have puzzles. But turning off autorun would slow down things a bit more.

I can confirm this. I made a clock which counts one second per 26 tics. In 60 seconds of real time, the clock had counted 69 seconds. The same is true if you compare the time elapsed according to the level stats with real time elapsed.

This means there are really 30 tics per second, not 26.

so all the speed runs are actually faster than they say?

Some speedruns i´ve seen show the real clock time and the duke time, and the rule seems to be using duke3d.exe only.

I'll see what I can do to fix the clock without fucking stuff up too much.

Isn't EDuke's speed an issue when you turn off VSync? Because the FPS will cap at 60 when you have it on, whereas for me it pegs to about 600-800FPS when its off (yet the game will move slightly faster then when the VSync is on)

I always keep Vertical Sync off, I just like seeing the insanely high FPS.

When vsync is on, the frame rate is smoother, which may sometimes make it seem like the game is going faster. But AFAIK, frame rate and game speed are unrelated.

They are, at least in most games (except old games that were targeted for very specific processors). Games attempt to do X amount of loops per second, rather than basing it off of framerate because different hardware can then have an affect on game speed. In Duke3D this is supposed to be 26, although apparently the math must be slightly off.

Are you talking about the multi-core CPU issues ?

Just press CTRL+ALT+DEL to pop up your task manager and set process to run on 1 CPU.
Then the speed problems are fixed.

At least on mine.
But this can happen for any old game usually and for any Duke Port I run. I notice they always have a stability issue. I was also wondering if it's possible, when compiling an executable, to change an option, so that the resulting executable will only use one core/CPU, just like when using the "imagecfg" tool on my web site, to patch an executable to make it run using just one core/CPU.

If you want to permanently patch your EXE so it does run on one core you can read about it on my site a tool called imagecfg.exe.
I don't know the official site but it is a very handy tool.

You need to install something like AMD's dual core optimizer, or whatever Intel's version is if you have one of those.

Overclock.net says that Intel doesn't have an optimizing program.

Hit the capslock button, or if for whatever (edit:) unlikely reason capslock isn't defined as your autorun button, go into options, keyboard setup, and look for the autorun command. You can change it to whatever you want.

Of course imo the levels were designed with autorun in mind, and I always play with autorun enabled. Otherwise it takes ages for Duke to get anywhere.

Yeah, I have autorun on constantly too. In DOS I'm constantly holding SHIFT. Just got used to it because I play with keyboard only. It wasn't until EDuke32 that I started using the mouse/keyboard combo and use autorun instead of holding SHIFT.
