It might be worth sharing here that in my research I've acquired an early tech demo of the canceled and never-before-seen Duke Nukem 4D: The Search for Duke. It was in development for the PlayStation 2, using Sony's EyeToy peripheral to take pictures of yourself that could be projected onto your player avatar (hence, 4D). 3D Realms planned it in response to the success of Half-Life, with its completely silent protagonist, but taking it one step further in that you, literally, were the main character.

Yes. The included development notes make it clear that the plan was for the player to join forces with Lo Wang, Caleb, Bombshell, Doomguy, and Tommy, as you travel through time and space to find Duke, having been kidnapped by the CyberCycloid Demon Emperor. I've worked through the game data enough to see varying degrees of implementation of all these characters. The art assets would fit great in a Doom mod.
