Old but New to this  "Trying to figure out how to Play and edit levels on Duke 3d in 2025"

#1

Hey everybody, I'm new to this forum. I've been itching to get back into level editing on Duke3d. Me and my brother were obsessed with it back in 96, it was our first Pc game and we got hooked to making our own levels. Since then I've always thought about getting back into it but could never figure it out. Stumbled upon this website through reddit. My question is how do I go about getting the best experience with the game itself along with the build engine? Do I purchase Duke 3D atomic edition off zoom platform? Or do I buy the world tour edition off Steam? I know the atomic edition comes with the Build Engine so I'm leaning towards that, but the world tour edition is updated with extra levels but I just don't know if the Build engine is compatible with it. Please help out a fellow Duke Head( Is that a thing?) God i'm old..

Try getting the Atomic Edition on Zoom, then use Eduke32 to play on newer systems and use the accompanying editor Mapster32; which is a updated, more capable edition of the good ol' Build.

You should only get World Tour if you're really interested in playing the new episode, and even then I recommend using the Eduke32 stopgap as opposed to the normal executable.

Thank you so much, already having a blast playing through some of those first levels. Quick question, when I try to open Mapster, an error comes up saying " There was a problem initializing the engine: No palette found. " Any idea how to fix this?

Make sure Mapster is on the same directory as your copy of the DUKE3D.GRP file. This usually fixes the problem.

This is what I'd consider a Duke mapper's bible: https://infosuite.duke4.net/

Mapster32 will come part of EDuke32 and it's basically the old editor on steroids, with autosaves/undo and way less corruption :)

Good luck with getting started again!
