Playable PSP build of DN: Critical Mass has been released.

I just saw this on twitter: https://twitter.com/...333584195489802

An anonymous donator gave them a playable PSP build of DN: Critical Mass and Extraction Point Alien Shootout (the reskinned Critical Mass).

https://archive.org/...d-psp-games.-7z

Edit: I haven't tested it yet, but Unseen64 is legit, so there should be no problems.

That Octabrain model is neat. Looks kind of like the DN3D version mixed with the action figure.

I've been messing around extracting the audio, so if anyone's interested in browsing through the music and sounds, I've packed it all up for download:

This is from the last 0.7.2580 Critical Mass build which contains the most complete assortment of audio, although I haven't specifically checked for differences between the builds yet. A lot of this audio is shared with the released Nintendo DS game, but there's plenty of new and unheard content here (namely the music), and the shared stuff is in higher quality.

What emulator does it run on perfectly

I could only get it to run on PPSSPP 1.0.1, higher versions didn't run it for me.

A lot of the music tracks are pretty cool!

Has anyone been able to open the included .max files in a 3D modelling program or convert them into another format? I only have 3ds Max 5 which doesn't read them, and converting them with online converters gives an error ( https://miconv.com and https://anyconv.com just say "Error" without additional information).

I played the very last 0.7.2580 build and the emulator/game crashes as soon as you finish the first jetpack segment you come to. Not sure if that's just the end of that particular build or there's another reason it's crashing. I haven't tried the other builds yet, but if anyone ends up playing them all and determines which one you can get the farthest in without the game crashing, it would be helpful to know. I started with the last build because I figured it would be the most complete version.

I have been trying to get it to run on both psp and ps vita hardware but so far I haven't had any luck on that front. Has anyone else tried?

It probably won't run on a retail PSP as it requires 64MB of ram to function. It right run if you use the "Use additional memory" function in CFW but can't confirm.

Okay, it turns out that the correct program to open those files is 3ds Max 2010. And then, it's a snap to export them in the format I want, and even use them in my own programs!

Interesting, some gameplay here.

Second experiment: I exported part of level 1 as an .obj file, then I imported it into UnrealEd as a static mesh.
Posted Image
Lesson learned: size does matter. The level was built assuming that 1 unit is 1 meter, which is not true in UnrealEd. According to the Unreal Engine documentation, in Unreal 1 unit equals 2 cm, so for the next experiment I'll have to scale it to 5000%.
I'll also have to experiment with the path to the textures, so that they show up correctly.

Okay, Unreal is a no-go. It turns out that a static mesh can have at most 7 textures, while a single piece of a Critical Mass level can have as many as it needs. The first piece alone, what I imported, has 41.

I spoke too soon! IT CAN BE DONE!!!

I had missed a whole option (Meshes->Edit->Properties->Mesh->Textures) where I can add all the textures I want!
This is another instance of my usual modus operandi: try to solve a problem, give up, complain online, find the solution and facepalm.

So would it be possible for someone to finish the game?

Does anyone have a PSP devkit?

It would certainly be possible, either as a PSP game or a PC port. Whether someone will actually do it... is a whole other story. After all, the assets to Duke Nukem: Zero Hour were released in 2017, and all that was done to this day is only a custom palette file that lets you view the levels in Mapster.

Alas, the duke community is much smaller these days than the likes of Doom or Half-Life, who have an entire army of obsessive programmers ready to take on any absurd project just because they can.

Sorry to ask a silly question/re-hash old news but why was the PSP cancelled?

Thanks

It sorta wasn't. It was repurposed with a new IP and released wasn't it? What was the protagonist's name again?

Extraction Point : Alien Shootout

with Carn Nash. "When Duke fails, I don't. Vinny and I were talking with the facebook group for DNCM at the time and trying to convince them to not go with such a silly name.

It was never released though. I think that was an 11th hour repaint of the character and rebranding of the game that didn't actually go anywhere. The game was never finished. I imagine what we see here of the PSP version was as far as any real development went, and then someone on the dev team reskinned Duke to look like Carn, and then it was just dropped.

I'm still unsure what to download, and what to see... the information flood is just big. But from what I've seen, the art style is gorgeous, and I want to see user levels with it (some textures would be great even in 3D). And The Slick Willy song will always be a masterpiece, only matched by Stalker.

I think we must find Wieder and Blum now to add some level design left in their heads.

Pretty sure you meant to post this about the newly leaked DNF 2001 build, and not about this PSP thing - so yeah, "still unsure what to download" seems to sum your situation right now quite well :P Anyway, there's been a link dropped in this thread (48th page in case direct link doesn't work).
