Duke Caribbean: Life's A Beach Plus  "Now Duke Plus-compatible!"

BTW I mentioned this on the Eduke topic page, but 'vacation.grp' isn't featured on the list in the Eduke Startup anymore ;) Is there a reason for this?

Sorry, my bad folks :D Turns out my vacation.grp was bad. All is well now.

I am sorry to say I cannot run this.
When I launch the game without this pack it doensn't work on polymer, I get all sorts of wrong models and textures.
When I tried to launch the game after installing this pack it won't run at all, I get the following error.
This is what the log says:
Found 122 warning(s), 7 error(s).
And then: Error compiling CON files

I think the problem starts with when I tried to install it using Caribbean.bat.
The vacation.grp is working just fine, but it gives me an error 3 times the DUKE3D.GRP could not be opened.
I have no idea why, I tried running the .bat file as admin and I made sure the file doesn't have any restrictions on it.

I tried the same with Nuclear Winter and even though it gave me the same error the game runs fine.
However all the new models from nuclear winter are still 2D including the Christmas trees, is that supposed to happen?

Anyway if someone finds out what is going on I would love to know.
The base game with the DC expansion works perfectly fine with everything from HRP.

Can you post your eduke32.log file?

And what is your directory structure like?

For me, it looks like: D:\Duke3D\Vaca_Plus\vaca_plus\Caribbean.bat with DUKE3D.GRP in D:\Duke3D\

Anybody home?! (echo)

Honestly, I don't know what I'm doing here either, I haven't been around in sometime and I thought I'd post on this blog because why not?!

Oh, I remember. Wasn't there talk one time of merging this and all the other expansion packs with the main HRP or am I making things up?

Just installed the HRP on my brother's old computer, which has a graphics card and it's AWESOME to play with everything turned up to max resolution, my other machine couldn't hack it. Really appreciate the work although
many models are unfinished and outdated, the HRP textures make up for it though.

I got bad news for you, mate. Basically nobody is working on the HRP any more. If you are into voxels though, there might be something coming your way soon.

I think voxels and AI upscaled textures is a more promising future than the HRP

Yeah, I've pretty much accepted that years ago. Still looks pretty though.

Call me out of touch, but I've never heard of voxels. Where can I find more about these?

For voxels, follow my signature link and it will get you to the Github repo with the latest voxel pack version. There are already some Vacation voxels in there (not in any of the official releases until now, though), but mxrtxn already made new ones and activation is still a bit complicated for inexperienced users. With a bit of EDuke32 coding magic, this might be fixed in the not-too-distant future, hopefully.

A good intro to the voxel pack is probably this video:

If there's ever going to be an HRP 5.0, it'd probably be upscaled textures + maphacks + voxel pack combined (not in one file, but all necessary addons included in a collective release, allowing for updates of individual files if needed). This way we'd finally have complete texture sets without any missing entries. Enemies would probably not be voxalized, but at least everything would have a consistent look instead of the stylistic mish-mash that's making the old HRP quite painful to look at in some places by now. Ideally they would find a way to get voxels working in Polymer before, too.

Just downloaded and texted the Voxel pack, gotta say I'm impressed! Really looking forward to see where this is heading. Yeah, like you said there's definately places where it just doesn't look right where old/outdated models and textures clash with the up to date versions.
Keep up the good work, lads

Am I doing something wrong when trying to load this with EDuke32?

I just setup the Duke It Out In D.C. HRP yesterday and it works good. I tried loading this HRP the same way and none of the Life's A Beach assets are loading.

Even when I try to load just the Life's A Beach assets by themselves they are not loading.

I'm getting the following errors before the game launches:

Also is there a normal way to download this as a zip rather than the strange svn repository?

There's where I got it from.

There's no link to a zip folder download. The only option provided for download is through the odd svn repository I already mentioned.

there's an old zip from around 2012, but it's way out-dated

i don't work with hrp a lot, but it looks like you are trying to load a maphacks.def file without having the maphacks folder in the base directory

possible solution:
delete the maphacks.def file if you're only running vacation from that game folder & edit mentions of it out of any other def file you have
or
get the maphacks folder from the main duke3d hrp download and drop it into the base folder

I fixed the issue with the mhk files not loading. It was caused because when I was poking around trying to solve the issue myself prior to posting about it here I accidently renamed them as def's instead when I was done looking inside.

I still can't load any of the Life's A Beach assets from the HRP though. Only the Duke 3D HRP assets are loading.

Here's the only error in the log:

Quote

.......Warning: defined hightile replacement for empty tile 32. Maybe some tilesXXX.art are not loaded?
..........................................................................

You are right about my directories though. I have all my expansions and addons in individual sub folders because I hate having a massive dumped mess of files in the base folder. However I had absolutely no problem installing the Duke 3D or Duke It Out In DC HRP's this way.

Why are the Life's a Beach and Nuclear Winter HRP's different?

How can I set them up to function like the other HRP's mentioned from subfolders inside the Duke Nukem 3D directory?

I dont have any issues editing the def/con files if need be.

Hey hey, I'm still on playing some Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach Plus! Yeah I mean this game sure deserves a new update with more of those 3D models.Even if no one around is working on those polygons of the weapons, enemies, and other things in Duke Caribbean Plus, I still have some clever ideas to re-texture the main pistol weapon to look more like a water gun. I sure hope we'll still get a Version 3.

Unfortunately, I think Vacation HRP has been pretty much abandoned :( There's been talks of merging it with the main HRP along with NW HRP but it's not happened, at least not yet

Man I sure hope one day if anyone cares about the High Resolution Pack for Duke Caribbean and Nuclear Winter, I hope to god that they wouldn't mind finishing around those 3D polygons for the game and I would be more happy with it.

I haven't played these HRP expansions in many years so I can't remember how complete they are model wise but I believe both have been finished or at least pretty close to having all the texture assets upscaled in high resolution packs. So one could combine those to at least finish that part if they aren't already. You would need to then find an artist to extend/upscale the menu tiles for widescreen though and then maybe lobby tea monster hard enough to contribute the missing models. Not likely to happen any time soon.

Tea Monster has retired from modeling, I can tell you that here and now. He isn't going to return for anything and anybody. Tried already for Quake, believe me. ;)

Yup, hence "not likely to happen any time soon". I remember he threw a shit fit over someone using one of his old models in a project a few years back and then saying he would never contribute anything again. Never understood that mentally. If I was as talented of a modeler as he was I would personally want to see my work out in the wild and would be flattered if others used it. Most mods are a hobbyist affair and not a commercial product at the end of the day. Guess it depends on how bad one wants to see these finished. Money talks and there are other artists out there...

Now "Duke It Out In D.C." is another story. Isn't the HRP basically done outside of widescreen menu tiles? That would require the least effort/collaboration to bring up to par with the last release of the main game HRP.

It's hardly worth the effort. We are talking about a few menu tiles at most. Maybe the title screen is worth doing, but almost anything else is already part of the new HRP or something hardly anybody will ever see, use or need.

It was a great project while it lasted, at least I very much appreciated it

Nowadays I sometimes use the HRP for the colorful textures. I have to admit, I really don't like some of the character models though, they just don't look right, especially the strippers. Dunno if there's a way to exclude character models but keep everything else?

If I recall correctly you had a to-do list with the TEN menu listed on it at one point which would never be seen outside of DOS so that seems like a rather subjectively biased opinion. I would argue the credits/help menus outside of the title screen are more important and seen far more frequently as they are at least present when playing with eduke32.

The point I'm making is that what's left to complete in the "Duke It Out In D.C." HRP is very small especially in comparison to the other two expansions since it uses mostly stock assets. Obviously I can't force you to finish the last bit if you have no desire to do so.

Regardless, I'm happy that the main game is at least finished. Thanks again.

You can edit whatever you like. HRP has always been a contentious project because it was done by group contribution over many years. This obviously results in a less cohesive finished product since there wasn't a single modeler and texture artist. Just open the def file and simply comment out or delete the file path of whatever assets you don't want to load. Or you can find the model file and delete it the quick and dirty way but obviously eduke32 is going to complain each time the HRP is loaded.

Either way, even if you dislike a specfic model, the game would look stupid if you went back to using the low res spites for the strippers with everything else in much higher resolution but it's your world, go nuts.
