I had no idea about the Bloodstained update. I'll check it out and maybe replay it.
I tried Blasphemous today after getting it on a Steam sale for about $6 last week. So far I don't like it...it seems like the the theme of misery pervades the gameplay as well as the story.

I mean yes. It is based on Catholic themes of sacrifice. We are all about that stuff. As a devoted catholic I have to admit I absolutely love it.
Also we got another metroidvania coming up hot!
Nice to see you here Danukem! If you have a metroidvania to recommend do leave a post mate.

Another one I have played recently is Aeterna Noctis, but I'm sorry to say I have not finished it and don't know if and when I will.
It's an excellent game, but very long and difficult. I got as far as fighting my evil twin boss. I rage-quit that fight because it requires switching quickly and precisely between several activities and I especially got hung up on using the teleport arrows in the middle of the fight. It doesn't help that the boss phases don't go in any particular order so you don't know when you suddenly have to change gears. Maybe my brain is just too slow these days.

Nah dude, I hate that. Just adding randomness into a boss fight is not good boss design.

I played Blasphemous a bit more and beat the Charred Visage boss. The boss fight was okay, but the game is still making me angry. I keep dying when trying to explore the snowy peaks area where the wind shifts and motherfuckers can knock you off cliffs in one hit. Then you have to start from the super far away save point and recover your body off the ledge where you got knocked off and maybe get knocked off again.

Lol I feel you mate. I also died a lot on it. You can always just go another route and come back later.

What is the actual penalty if you don't pick up your body? There's a statue in town that absolves you of guilt -- does that erase the penalty?

Sorry for answering late Danukem, I forgot to check on the thread. ( ̄▽ ̄*)ゞ
When you don't pick up your guilt fragment then your fervour (magic meter) and your tears of atonement (the souls like currency) get nerfed. So yes absolving your guilt erases the debuff. You can actually destroy those statues open the entrance to the confessor dungeon which helps you evolve the thorn and get the true ending. You need a specific item to enter the dungeon afaik, i think the immaculate bead corrupted by guilt. I think you have to die like 3 or 4 times till the bead turns black and it turns into another item.

I have been replaying Hollow Knight on my nintendo and I gotta say nothing has changed on how I felt about it. It's a pretty game and the soundtrack is great. But I'm not a fan of the dark souls/rouguelike esque mechanic of losing your money and nerfing your mana meter.
Which tbf it is also present in other games like Blasphemous but in Blasphemous I feel the map is less labyrinthine and big than in HK. Also those charms frens, the majority of those charms are worth shit.

My kids both love Hollow Knight and have gotten all of the endings for it. I don't have the patience for it. I tried playing it a few years ago and quit about 2/3 of the way through.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a good game. I just think it has a lot of filler at times. Out of curiosity, what did you not like about it?

I have! It's pretty good actually. It's the spiritual successor of a Doom mod called Vomitoreum afaik. It's not that long thought, it took me like 6 hours.

So, 5 days ago this trailer just released:
Apparently they are rebooting the Prince of Persia series as a action platformer with light metroidvania elements. I honestly don't know how to feel about this. It definitely not what I was expecting of a PoP remake/reboot.
If y'all interested they also released a video with 21 minutes of gameplay footage:
I'm more than likely passing out on this one. The change in style and tone are just not for me. Maybe I will "acquire a legally drm free copy" of it and try it out.

BLASPHEMOUS 2 HAS RELEASED.
It actually released like 2 weeks ago or so but I have been pretty busy. Sorry folks. It's pretty fucking great though! And cheap considering the amount of content you get. Same as the first game.

There's a recently released DOS games called Anzu Castle Gracula, which, it is my understanding, is a pretty straightforward Castlevania "clone", but somehow the main character is an anthropomorphic bird. The game is coded in QBasic, and coded very well (I know some games written in that language are pretty shaky to play, at least in DOSBox), and the sprite & tile art is excellent 16-colour pixel work. For now there's a free shareware version and a registered one which is the same thing, but you've supported the author with some money (s not the Apogee shareware model), but it's coming to Steam too.

Oh that looks neat! Recently I have been playing Chasm. It has as is to be expected of most indie metroidvanias, pretty beautiful pixel art. I haven't gotten so far but so far it seems like a fine igavania.
It's on consoles and PC. I'm playing it on the PS Vita.
