Michael Hunt In-Progress Map Series

Out of curiosity I gave the Megaton and World Tour workshops a look and found that they are still sort of active with maps being uploaded every now and then. I plan on making topics to highlight some of the other maps I've found but for now:

Planned to be a 5 level series, these maps are well detailed and created by Michael Hunt. So far four levels are completed, Bank Job, Penthouse, Sacred Ground and Archer

I've attached the four levels to this post but if you'd like to download the levels yourself, you can find them at these links: Bank Job Penthouse Sacred Ground Archer

I'm sure they'd also appreciate any feedback at the above Steam links as well!

Thanks for sharing!

Does the attached files are more compatible with eduke32?

Just asking 'cause looks like they have different date and time compared to the ones from the workshop.

I removed the 6-8mb pngs used for the Steam Workshop so the zips are repackaged but the map files should be identical.

I'm really happy about the cross-posting from other sources that's been going on lately. Seeing a lot of maps we wouldn't otherwise. Case in point I haven't touched Megaton in years, outside of downloading it to grab the GRPs. But as far as starting the game, pretty much never, let alone the workshop.

Damn this is some solid-looking clean design on those screenshots. Totally in support of the cross-posting too personally, thanks for making me aware of this author. Love it when Duke4 feels like the community hub it is, if that even makes sense.

Mikko actually just reviewed the maps he made, check it out:

Played them recently and they're indeed pretty cool, probably some of the best examples of classic style in user maps, pulled with more sense of grandeur in mind though. I generally agree with Mikko's reviews.

Bank Job is mostly Bank Roll, mixed with some Movie Set and Pigsty vibe. It felt a bit unbalanced at the beginning, with practically no health items whatsoever until a secret with medkit, but even larger concern was ammo scarcity (playing on CGS). I really liked how the vault security was done, the crack at the end that Mikko mentions was hardly noticable really and I only noticed it because there was a single pipebomb nearby, so I knew there's stuff to blow up.

Penthouse is much improvement really. This time the theme is Rabid Transit, Duke Burger, Toxic Dump/Launch Facility sewers (this part was a bit too much inspired by the original levels IMO, almost looking like a copy) and then the brilliant city part which had a bit of everything, from Freeway to E4 city levels. I wasn't expecting the city part to be that large really after emerging from already quite lengthy subway part, which was a very cool surprise. The highway bridge has even a Roch 6 vibe (same goes for the Duke apartment at the end which was simply brilliant, easily the coolest design in the map). The combat seems more fair, although on the other hand some fights could easily be "cheesed". The sandbox gameplay of the city part was pretty cool, especially since there were quite a few completely optional locations that didn't need to be visited for progress.

The strong and accented shadows looks great and truly have this 3DR feeling. The maps can surely be recommended, they're worth playing! The Author is also quite active in his Steam workshop, so maybe it's worth leaving him your comments and feedback when you play it :)

Here are two video playthroughs - one for each map - I just found. This uploader operates at quite the frenetic pace, I wonder if that's 'our' Radar or a different Radar? Either way, they're always playing every new map that comes out.

I played both maps, they're both good but Penthouse is a clear improvement over Bank Job. I basically agree with everything Aleks said so there's not much I can add. :P
Had the same health and ammo issues in Bank Job, I ended up using the fountain a lot to heal up. Also I did get soft locked at the end because I missed the crack earlier and ran out of explosives.

Pentouse was an improvement both in gameplay and visuals, full of nice surprises and well set up fights.
The outdoor area was great, I especially loved the strong shadows and the atmosphere. The signs of destruction are a nice touch as well, some nicely sloped sector work to sell the effect.
One of the battlelords even managed to give me a jumpscare, it managed to disappear into the police station and cought me by surprise. :D

Conclusion: I would say the first map could use some touch ups but both maps are worth playing!

I played both maps and liked'em a lot! This Michael Hunt is on the roll right now (more maps coming), so very curious about his next works.
I liked Bank Job for it's scripted sequences (enemies open doors and such), but some unnececary spritework lead to some bland-looking rooms. Also not enough healhpacks. Still, I enjoyed the map.
At first, I thought that Penthouse is a lesser map of the two, with not really exciting subway areas. However, it turns out to be a much better and bigger map later, with each new part of the map topping previous one. The Penthouse itself is cherry on the icing really. I liked this one more.

3DR style combined with some moderately modern stuff (lol) works well here. I like the fact that the classic style gets more recognition latetly, as people seems genuinely enjoying maps made in such style. This Michael Hunt guy should make something with Fernando at some point. :)

Greetings!

Someone in here contacted me through my Steam workshop page and encouraged me to join this site. Have to admit, I'm surprised there's still such an active community for this game, but the feedback so far has been fantastic. Thanks! :D

Part 3 is coming together nicely, though still needs a few sections to construct and a lot of polish and detail adding throughout. It's probably going to be somewhere between the previous two in terms of size, but based on feedback I've expanded my plans for 4 and 5.

I see Area 51 reference this time, cool! One suggestion would be to maybe change the starry sky texture to the other one, as this one is pretty stretched and looks a bit off.

I'm getting flashbacks to the "Forever And One More Day" series.

That's a good thing to get flashbacks to, if you never played them.

Fixing the sky is one of the things on my to-do list. It's weird, looks fine in the editor, but is stretched and broken when in-game. Had the same problem in the last map and had to use the texture somewhere else then copy/paste it over the affected areas to fix it.

"Alt+C" might be a good hotkey you are looking for - it replaces all the textures of the same tile number like the one you press it on to the one you copied with Tab, so changing the sky in the whole map should be pretty much one click.

Actually there is a designated feature for replacing parallaxed skies in a whole map, in 3D mode you press Tab on the one you want to copy everywhere then I think Alt + Shift + Enter on any sky. IIRC Alt + C doesn't work well for changing the whole sky of a map at once, something about certain properties not carrying over, can't remember what exactly but I know it's not optimal. For other applications such as replacing every instance of one sprite with another different sprite in a whole map, Alt + C is fine though.

Thanks for the tip. Alt + C did it, saved me a ton of texturing :)

Awesome! I just got finished playing the first two levels and really enjoyed them. Looking forward to trying #3 out.

Edit:
I created a Steam account because it said I needed one to download, but I still can't figure it out.

This is what I currently see, with no option to download:

Sorry, the link I posted to my Steam page is only compatible with the Megaton edition on Steam; which is also no longer available! There's a .zip download at the top of this thread that should work for you though - huge thanks to the guy that added it! :)

^ Pardon my curiosity but I'm wondering, when exactly did you get into Duke 3D mapping and start making levels? Asking as there's been some recent (and more than welcome) waves of people just discovering/rediscovering Duke 3D and releasing levels for the first time, so counting you with them is tempting, except here your design is looking especially clean and true to the original levels - as though hinting that you've been familiar for a long time. If that's not the case and you only somewhat recently found out about the game due to being younger or what-do-I-know, then damn you picked it up quick. Congrats on releasing your third map too, at this point I should just play all three in succession since I do have yet to catch up with the first two.

Thanks :)

I've been playing DN3D since it first released back in the 90's and have made maps on and off for years, but never published anything. I've done all the classics including fulbright maps with no shading, maps where everything is over-scaled and Duke feels about the size of a 3-year-old and some other pretty forgettable stuff (wish I still had some of it to be honest!). A few months ago I was clearing some things out and found some USB drives so had a look on them and found a map I'd made a few years ago but never finished, so I figured I'd finish it up and put it on Steam so that I'd finally actually published something. That's the map that eventually became Bank Job and since I had a lot of fun with it and people seemed to like it I decided to carry on with the episode and create some new maps from scratch.

Thanks for putting up with my silly background interrogation. That's great, I could tell the OG 1990's DNA in your design from the screenshots and videos but at this point people have become so good at mapping (and mapping tools so much more convenient to use too, thanks to Mapster32), you never know for sure until you ask. And yeah, there's always been a core community modding for this game/engine, just a bit out of view when compared to the Doom scene but to anyone seriously interested in classic FPS then the Build engine clearly isn't too obscure either. Here has been the main popular hub for a few years it seems (at least when it comes to public message boards), whereas back in the days it used to be scattered in between several different forums (but you'd always bump into new faces). Quite a lot of similar 'since 1996' gamer/mapper profiles on here too, also due to the old-school format of the platform I guess, but the Duke conversation is great. Honestly it's not the first time as of late hearing of people who've been mapping forever but never released anything till now just coming out with levels publicly and I like that, seeing more longtime fans' personal takes on the game and its level design is cool. I hope you stick around!

Thanks. I don't have Megaton and haven't used Steam before so I was confused that there was no download after clicking subscribe. I was able to download the map from the link on the original post. Looking forward to playing it hopefully later today.

So far, I'm really liking the new map. I think I'm lost on the switch puzzle though...
