Does anyone know when the Desert Eagle was replaced with the 1911?

#1

Was it Gearbox doing or it was already done?. Just curious <_< (the Duke statue still has it though...)

Duke has used several pistols. Duke Nukem 3D had a "Glock" clone (it's not actually modelled after the gun, but the internet has mistaken the gun for a Glock for a long time now, and so most people associate it with that weapon), and then in DN64 he had a 1911 styled gun, but it was just a reskinned DN3D pistol. Zero Hour doesn't have any "pistol" like this besides a blaster and revolvers in some levels. TTK, LOTB, DN GBA, DNMP, and I think that shitty DS/PSP game have the Desert Eagle.

Duke Nukem Forever originally seemed to have a pistol that was scoped and not based on a real weapon, and it later became a Desert Eagle, and then a 1911. Why? I think there's a lot of reasons why, but the main reason is because they went with an "All American" feel, or at least they had intended to (hence all the American flags in the promotional art), and the 1911 is one of the most well known American handguns of all time, WW2 games were popular during development, a 1911 is more realistic for combat than a desert eagle, at the start of DNF development, the 1911 was still in use in small numbers in the US armed forces but they were being phased out with the Beretta 92FS), etc. There could be a whole list of reasons for the change, but in the grand scheme of things, Duke has never really had a designated sidearm like James Bond has the PPK (and later the P99 and the PPQ, but all are Walthers and depict improvements in technology). I think they wanted more like an action hero vibe, where he uses whatever pistol they think is the best for the game. They could've given him a Ruger P95, Beretta M9, Sig P226, CZ75b, etc, they all fill the same role in terms of gameplay. If it were up to me, Duke would carry a CZ75 SP01 in stainless or gold, but that's just my opinion. Why? Because it gives the sexy look type of gun you want a bad ass to carry, but it's got the effectiveness of a pistol like you see in DN3D, and a 19 round capacity.

A Desert Eagle is cool, but in reality it would hinder Duke's progress. The Pig Cops are mutated police officers, who would have either 9mm or 40 S&W handguns. In Duke Nukem 3D, the pistol he uses is probably 40 S&W, because the ammo capacity is 12. If it were 9mm, the ammo capacity would be 15-17. Obviously, the designers may not have thought about this, but I thought I'd mention it anyways because it makes the most sense. But a Desert Eagle uses revolver ammo, either a 357 Magnum or it would be 44 Magnum, or most likely for Duke, 50 AE. These are higher recoiling rounds, less commonly used by police, but definitely more powerful. The problem is that these guns are ammo finicky. You must find the right brand of ammo to use for your particular DE, and even then it could still jam after shooting too much. It needs to be kept clean and maintained more than most semi-auto handguns, because of its gas operated action. The Glock style gun would more than likely be used by police as well, because of its polymer design. The gun would be more lightweight and easier to carry than a DE or even a 1911, but is Duke the type to carry plastic guns? I don't really think so, and I feel the pistol in DN3D is one he just had to make due with in that game. The advantage of him using this pistol is because the pig cops would have a lot of spare ammo and mags lying around like I said earlier.

A 1911 makes sense because it's a popular handgun in the US, and is still used in some areas for security, military, etc. It uses the 45 ACP round, but there exist 1911s that use 9mm, 40 S&W, 10mm, and even 357 Magnum. These guns are fairly reliable if you're a person like Duke who knows firearms. It takes TLC and maintenance to keep them running at top performance. Duke could handle that. The problem is it's an older design of a gun, and there are far more guns out there that Duke could use that would give him a greater advantage over the aliens, as 1911s are generally limited to a 7-9 shot magazine.

Duke 3D's pistol appears to be modeled on the Hi-Point 9MM line.

Already done.

There was a picture of duke with golden eagles as of 2006. I'd wager the version of DNF we first saw in 2007 with the teaser is when the game was onto the version we more or less got in the end. So, likely when they did the big 2007 changes and had the team rearranged is when (George) decided to with a Golden M1911. Personally I like Duke with a 1911. Though as I suggested to Sebab, an alternative would be the bigger meaner cousin to the original 1911. The SVI Infinity. It's just a roided up 911. Fitting Duke.

The Golden 1911 was in a leaked demo reel from 2009. It was definitely 3D Realms choice.

In fact I remember there was a story floating around that the gun was modeled off a real M1911, and that various members of the team started fucking around with it. You'd think being in Texas they'd have some sense about guns... Oh yeah that was actually in the DNF art book. They went through a buncha different pistol ideas. A lot of them were just goofy/sucked and over complicated things. I can see what they were going for initially. They, initially really wanted the pistol to still be useful late game. SOmething Halo actually picked up years later.

Thanks for the detailed answer, i though it was changed way back when they changed the M16 for the Ripper, and couldn't find anything about it.

Actually further details;

In DNF as released, there is that stone Duke statue seen outside the casino (the piggies pull it down.) It's holding the desert eagle that was depicted in the picture from 2006. So initially the "2007" version of DNF featured the Eagle, but it was replaced fairly quickly. Probably after 2007. The "triptych" trailer features the Eagle, and that's still under "3D Realms" before Gearbox took over.

The exact year the Eagle got replaced was 2008, according to the DNF artbook (quoting from the duke wiki page here)
The DNF Pistol went through various incarnations while the game was created:

1997-1998 High-tech modified Glock 17, 3D Realms wanted to keep a part of the original Duke Nukem 3D style.
1999-2008 Golden Desert Eagle.
2008-2011 Colt 1911 (Note: In the 2008 and 2009 version, it still used the Desert Eagle sounds)

It should be noted the game uses assets from different points of development - the statue with the eagles features a duke model that closely matches face wise with the Dec. 2007 teaser model (also known as the Willis Duke or Trashcan Duke model) which further provides proof the eagles remained for all of 2007.

As to WHEN in 2008 the Eagle got replaced is unknown - the earliest known screenshot of the M1911 is dated June 25th, 2008: https://www.engadget...ver-screenshot/
