There's a bit of a controversy over this on Twitter right now. What are your thoughts? Some people are calling the series irrelevant and that "like Duke Nukem, it was funny when I was 12 but now it's just cringe-worthy." I've never liked the LSL series so it's really interesting to see a backlash against it similar to how Christians reviled it in the 80s and 90s. The whole thing is fascinating to watch.

I played I think 3 games in the middle of the series long ago. I haven't kept up with the later releases to know if they retained the humor and cleverness of the originals.

I haven't played any of them, but Al Lowe, the original designer, worked on them all up to number 7. Then the IP was sold to CodeMasters before ActiVision acquired Vivendi (then-owners of the Sierra IPs) and they made Magna Cum Laude and Box Office Bust which were not adventure games and were just more arcadey type stuff with a different Larry character. then Al Lowe returned for the LSL Reloaded remake that was made a few years ago. But the organizer was a douche and burned bridges with fans, employees, and others in the industry and so even though it got released it tanked in popularity. Now it seems CodeMasters are giving it another go with a German dev. No idea if it'll be any good. No idea if the originals are any good honestly.

My thought after looking at the image: This is ridiculous. The original Leisure Suit Larry (1987) was a remake of Softporn (1981). Then Larry 1 was remade in VGA graphics (1991) and remade again as "Reloaded" (2013). How many more times are they going to remake the same fucking game? After looking at the steam page, this doesn't seem to be a full remake, they're just re-using Lefty's bar, which was the first location you visited in Larry 1. The steam page also says that the ultimate girl in the game is supposed to be Faith, who may or may not be the same Faith as in Larry 1. So yeah, definitely some re-used content here (not just the name and main character) to cash in on the nostalgia factor.

I played and finished all of the original Larry games (1-7) because I like point & click adventure games in general. Also played Magna Cum Laude but never finished it because I don't like games with terrible controls and boring unskippable minigames.

I don't know anything about a "controversy". This thread is the first time I ever heard about this game. But what's the worst that can happen to this game? A couple of people (who were probably not going to buy the game anyway) are getting upset. So what? This isn't 1996 where you had to sell physical copies of the game and therefore were screwed if some big-name retailers refused to sell your game because some people complained about it. I strongly doubt that something as serious as that could happen on any of the big download platforms. It might not get featured on the main store page, but there are other ways to let people know the game exists. Like this "controversy", for example.

PS: Magna Cum Laude was still published by Sierra/Vivendi in 2004.

Now I have to say that if this is your reaction to something completely harmless like a new Larry game then you're an idiot who must be the dullest fuck ever at parties. It's good to have an opinion on something but this just takes that too far to the point where the article just comes off as an ignorant, incompetent piece of garbage.

As for the game itself I like what I'm seeing so far and I think that the fan reaction to its existence is a bit too negative. Sure, Al Lowe is not involved but that doesn't mean that the game will be bad and honestly the concept is better than what a lot of the Larry sequels had. The idea that Larry travels through time from the 80s to the 21st century and he has to face the #metoo stuff, the tendencies of modern society and online dating is great and really if you want to reboot the franchise without Al Lowe that's the correct way to do it. On top of that there is clearly a coherent story and visual design here: they deliberately chose not to base Larry's looks on the later games but on how he looked like in Larry 1-2-3 (that's why he's taller, a bit slimmer and younger) so it looks like they understand the source material pretty well.

The development team seems like an inexperienced bunch but actually they worked together with Daedalic Entertainment on a few adventure games so I'm willing to bet that they know what they're doing. And well, they are German and while I'm not exactly down with German humor usually they make pretty good and great point-n-click adventure games. The 2D graphics seem nicely detailed (that's important for a point-n-click because having to properly explore most of the screens is part of what makes a game like this fun) and the art style is pretty Larry too. I hope they don't fuck it up because to me it looks really promising.

I can debunk that with the title of a show: Ash vs. Evil Dead. Ash is a backwards asshole just like Duke and Larry are but - again: just like Duke and Larry - he's a super likeable character. The only thing you have to do in order to make a character like that relevant and fun today is to focus on why he's awesome while at the same time have new characters to react to the character's old school mentality. This is what Pablo and Kelly does in Ash vs. Evil Dead and it works wonderfully both in terms of comedy and as a method to "lighten" up the elements that could cause an outrage on flower land. It's a wonderful show, pure Evil Dead / Army of Darkness fun without dumbing anything down.

Eve was the final girl, but there was a Faith in the original too. More proof that it's not a remake.

I never played the games in the series cause I hate Point and Click games, but I may give this one a shot, though LSL chose the right time to resurrect itself when 80s nostalgia is all the rage and gamers are in a revolt against the said irrelevant gaming sites who are trying to get all this risque stuff banned.

Though I think Steam was the wrong place to put this game since Steam is currently under fire themselves for threatening all the adult games on Steam.

The worst thing about his article is that at the end, he links to an old review by a different reviewer of a different game that was made by different people. If you go to that review, it's clear that the reviewer is too annoyed at the "sexism" and "racism" (the "racism" consisted of having a black pimp character in the game and a joke reference to large black penises) of the game to focus much on the actual gameplay. So we have an article telling us that a game should not exist, because his friend --who is clearly not the intended audience for the game-- did not like the previous game, which was not even made by the same people.

Also, I wonder if people who review romance novels ever complain that the novels are "not relevant" or "do not need to exist". More likely, the reviewers understand that the trashy books have a certain audience who enjoys them, are interested in providing useful information to that audience, and do so.

LSL games are obviously for a small niche market, and in a world where we are flooded by games of all genres for people of all tastes, there is nothing wrong with that.

Btw. I think that the stuff like that Eurogamer review - and the sex scandal at Replay Games of course - is part of the reason why Al Lowe called it quits 5 years ago: he didn't want to deal with this shit anymore.

This goes to show that providing useful reviews is not a goal of the site. They assigned someone to review the game who obviously was going to be offended by it, therefore guaranteeing that her review would not be relevant to the people who would be interested in that game.

Just looked at the publisher, Assemble Entertainment and it seems like they have the rights to Larry now (except for Larry Reloaded for some reason). A few months ago they released all the old games (except for Box Office Bust but who needs that piece of crap?) on Steam:

I have these from GOG already but if anyone wants to take the old nostalgia for a spin the price is pretty cool.

Seriously, I originally wanted to make it clear that Faith wasn't the ultimate girl in the original, but I assumed that everybody who played the game would remember the apple & Eve thing. Faith was the one guarding the entrance to Eve's penthouse, and she went straight home to her boyfriend when you gave her the correct item. At least that's how it was in the original and VGA versions (I haven't played Reloaded).

I’m hesitantly excited for this. I am a fan of the originals and point and click adventures in general. Maybe I’m in the minority here but the new art style looks fine to me. I’d prefer if Larry more closely resembled his appearance in Shape Up or Slip Out, but it’s not a deal breaker for me. The design used in Love for Sail and onwards, I’ve always thought, only ever worked in LSL7 where all the characters were similarly styalized. Reloaded being the prime example, with Larry looking like a cheap trace job of his well animated appearance in that game, while everyone else looked like a normal human being. The only egregious thing to me is they made Larry much taller than he has ever been before.

My concern comes from the recurring locations and the non-involvement of Al Lowe. I hope that sooner rather than later we get a real decent gameplay trailer that shows us something fresh.

Personally SQ4 is my favorite but SQ3 is pretty cool too, SQ5 is great as a massive Star Trek spoof. I really wish the VGA style remake of SQ3 wasn't canceled.

Out of all of Sierra's adventure games I absolutely the love Quest for Glory series, but my all time favorite game from it is QFG4 and I find it to be a masterpiece, I also like the VGA style remake of QFG2 as I love the Arabian theme.

SQ4 is my favourite as well. Best art, best story, time travel (I'm a sucker for that), and classic Roger suit. Also, Vohaul. And, hey, Gary Owens. Was never into QFG. Never liked RPG stuff as a kid. Seems difficult to get into now after all these years. I played QFG1 and started QFG2. Far as I got.

I just bought it and will post my first impressions later (game unlocks in about 8 hours on Steam).

I am very sceptical about the game, but since I am currently working on 3 point'n'click games of which 1.5 fall into the same category as Larry I might get a few inspirations (probably what NOT to do, when it comes to gameplay).

Slightly off topic, but Al Lowe is now selling off, among other collectables, floppy disks containing the source codes for Leisure Suit Larry 1 and 2.
