Has the game been shortened?

WARNING: This post contains level design and plot spoilers, so if you don't want to know, stop reading and go back.

If you take a peek at the various .int files in the System directory of the demo, you'll at some point come across what appears to be a list of the levels.

SPLevel0=Duke Lives
SPLevel1=Damn! It's Late...
SPLevel2=The Duke Cave
SPLevel3=Mothership Battle
SPLevel4=The Lady Killer
SPLevel5=Vegas in Ruin
SPLevel6=The Duke Dome
SPLevel7=The Hive
SPLevel8=Queen Bitch
SPLevel9=Strip Club
SPLevel10=Crash Course
SPLevel11=The Duke Burger
SPLevel12=The Mighty Foot
SPLevel13=Ghost Town
SPLevel14=Highway Battle
SPLevel15=Dam Top
SPLevel16=The Shrunk Machine
SPLevel17=The Forkstop
SPLevel18=Generator Room
SPLevel19=Underground
SPLevel20=The Clarifier
SPLevel21=Blowin' The Dam
SPLevel22=Final Battle
SPLevel23=Press Conference

These (and from what we've seen of the game) match up very well with the following images, which were leaked around May 09, except the game continues after blowing the dam and defeating the boss (and starts to get good IMO).

Perhaps they (Gearbox) thought it would take too long to fully complete, so decided to cut it out. If so, I can only hope it gets completed and released as DLC (creepy dream sequence, playing as bombshell and fighting Duke clones sounds awesome).

It seems short, but it depends on the size of the levels and whether or not that inlcudes backtracking at any point and some maps are actually split into two parts (From seeing a similar list). Map amounts can seem small but they can make up for that in general size, plus DNF has map-based puzzles and interactive objects as well, so I wouldn't say it's been shortened until we've played the full game.

Hard to tell, sure the SP maplist has 23 entries, but I guess most entries can be divided into several map-parts.

On the other side: do you really think Gearbox leaves out the mod tools without a proper DLC line up plan?

Well it seems like this is how the current DNF levels match up with the leaked storyboard:
Duke Lives = Football Stadium
Damn! It's Late... = Talk Show
The Duke Cave & Mothership Battle = Duke Cave
The Lady Killer = Casino Part 1 & Casino Part 2
Vegas in Ruin = Vegas Streets
The Duke Dome = Duke Dome Exterior
The Hive & Queen Bitch= Duke Dome Hive
Strip Club & Crash Course = ?
The Duke Burger = Duke Burger
The Mighty Foot & Ghost Town & Highway Battle = Monster Truck Rally
Dam Top & The Shrunk Machine = Dam Interior
The Forkstop = Dam Exterior
Generator Room = Dam Generators
Underground & The Clarifier = Dam Sublevels
Blowin' The Dam & Final Battle = Bomb the Dam
Press Conference = Talk Show Outro

This leaves Titty City, Agricultural Center, RC Car Driving 1, RC Car Driving 2, Cloning Research, Platform Ride Part 1, Platform Ride Part 2 and Teleport/Fathership all unaccounted for.

Gearbox just got what 3D Realms had already made,they aligned the levels and fixed some bugs.
That's all they did.
It's obvious that the levels missing from the final game are the levels that where 0% finished by 3D Realms.
Gearbox just corrected some things in what they already had in their hands,they didn't started making whatever 3D Realms had planned but never even started working on...

I don't think that's the case.

Strip Club = Titty City for a guess (Watch the Babes trailer, you'll see Duke in a VIP booth at what seems to be Titty City), and the RC car is in what appears to be the early levels of the current DNF. As for the rest, I don't know.

Well so far there has been no indication in any of the videos that Bombshell is a playable character (or even in the game), or that there are Duke clones. Either Gearbox is being secretive about those, or that they've been cut. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

LOL. Bombshell had better be a playable character! I created her as my Saints Row 2 character already (pretending that Duke was still warming up for DNF, of course), and to have her as a second character to play in this game would certainly prove awesome.

I think it was one of the podcasts where they said they cut some levels that felt out of place or boring, but I don't know if that happened before or after Gearbox got the game.

It's being released as separate DLC http://www.eurogamer...er-dlc-detailed

Quote

DLC Pack #3 includes 15 new single-player maps, arm wrestling, the "Impregnader" weapon and a karaoke machine.

I'll still get it even if it costs money.

That article doesn't say anything was cut from the game to become DLC. But if the article is true, it proves Randy has been bullshitting whenever he was asked about DLC and always replied "I don't have time to think about that, we're just concentrating on shipping the game".

Randy Pitchford bullshitting again?! NOOOOOOOOOO! Not Randy!

Just one more example to the ever-growing list of his lies.

All this bullshitting is starting to make me want to cancel my pre order. It's just the principle of it. You don't jerk around your customers like that!

How long have you been following the development of DNF?

*Sigh* Sure, DNF uses DLCs, guess they want to shut out the modding community that was formed from the Duke Nukem 3D days. :(
I can already gather that Gearbox won't be giving us the level editor or any of those modding tools like George B. promised to during the 3DR era of DNF.

"Final Battle" may not necessarily be the Fathership level. One of the Triptych guys mentioned in one of the podcasts that they didn't have anything of the ending (the leaked docs mention a 0% completion, after all), and I think they hinted at the fact that they made one from scratch.

Editors aren't straight competitive with dlc.
Look at Elder Scrolls or Fallout 3 as examples.
Bethesda released editors for both games,and then released dlcs,and the dlcs sold well. :(
In the worst case scenario,Gearbox will give us the editor after they have finished making dlcs,but that only if the don't have self-esteem.

From the beginning, so I know there's been a ton of nonsense surrounding it for all these years. But now that it's finally done and is shipping, the nonsense should stop.

We were told the demo wouldn't be something we've seen before, and it was. We were told they didn't have any ideas for any DLC, but they had it all mapped out. We were told none of the violence or gore was toned down, yet it was. That's not cool

They'd better not cut the game into separate DLC shit or else i'm done with Gearbox and 2K crap, and I mean seriously.

What one game company decides to do does not affect what other game companies do. The growing trend in the industry is to release DLC and restrict modding.

Yeah, you're probably right...perhaps I should start respecting the Duke 3D/EDuke32 community when it comes to modding a little bit longer than I expected. Sorry about what I said in that other thread before...
I thought for sure that DNF would have had a strong modding community, but apparently, Gearbox is not 3D Realms, so we'll see what happens.

Wait for the final game about the violence or gore.
The guys that played the leaked russian DNF said it wasn't toned down at all.
They also said this will be one of the most violent games of the year.

Now i am really curious..

About the DLC, those questions were like six months ago, it could be possible that they didn't have any plans back then.
The demo was nothing like we imagined it to be, i really had fun with it ( 8 hours of playing ) but i really expected something else than the PAX demo.

You'd rather have more of the game blown? The idea of the demo was just to finally interactively play DNF in a tangible real form. And to whet your appetite for the full game. Both of which it accomplished in spades.

Hey first time posting here but i wanted to ask you.
Have our russian friends said anything about the level design?
Lot of people wondering if its going to be as linear as the demo was or will there be a bit more exploration
