The r_redbluemode Command in EDuke32  "Any good for playing Duke in real 3D?"

For the heck of it I typed in the console the r_redbluemode 1 command and the game really looks like it's in 3D. But without any 3d glasses, I couldn't tell if or how good it is. Was that a feature in the game which the title Duke Nukem 3D originated? Also never knew there was actually a 3D mode untill recently. Was it there before EDuke32? If so, what was the command used when playing in Dos? Just curious and interested in the facts now that everything seems to be going 3D.

This feature has existed for many years in EDuke32. I'm not sure if if was in the DOS port or if it was added by icculus or JonoF or Ken.

From what I remember, it was leftover code that was never activated in the original game. I could be entirely wrong, though.

Yeah. Red-blue mode was working fine in DOS Duke through ScreenMode 7. The code was removed for the software renderer at some point after Ken's initial release and r_redbluemode activates the equivalent code he wrote for Polymost.

Yes, in v1.3d of the original DOS game, red-blue stereo mode could indeed be activated by setting ScreenMode to 7. It's quite buggy, though. From what I remember, rendering becomes corrupted when a mirror is to be displayed, stuff like 2D map view and menu used one of the red/blue color chosen 'randomly', and a great corruption could appear when Duke dies. The game could also crash at that point, if not later.
Viewscreens probably had their own glitches.

Regarding v1.5, you could try setting ScreenMode to 6 (I believe 6 and 7 were swapped). While I don't remember the game crashing, it wasn't really useful, as several vertical lines appeared.
I recall that by a little patching of the Duke3D sources (possibly related to palette/lookup), these lines could disappear so at least it wouldn't be less usable than in v1.3d. It's still quite buggy, though.

Now if we talk about EDuke32 and the Polymost renderer... I recall it works with a resolution of 1280x960, but not well with 1280x1024, where flickering occurs (possibly cause it's not a 4:3 res). That stereo mode does have similar issues with mirrors and the like.

what I found when I tested it the first time I read about it in the wiki was that it works by alternating each frame by red and blue, at least in polymost mode. This means the effect is very choppy at low framerates and I wasn't able to record it using FRAPS at a very high quality. It'd be nice in the future after polymer's finished to make a new and improved version of this :)

I was never able to get it working with classic or polymer though :)

It seems like this is 3D as in Virtual Boy moreso than 3D as 3DS. i.e. All color is gone.

Why do that call it 3D?
3D glasses do not work on this shit, that's false fucking advertising.

@The Commander: Is that the bottom line from that unknown persons quote? True or false?
No matter. I'll test it out myself sometime.

Those only work with NVidia cards though, right?

I remember when I was much younger I was perusing the duke3d.cfg file and discovered references to ScreenMode 7 "Red/Blue Mode". I immediately activated it. It really does a number on your eyes. You have to focus almost too much. It's like crossing your eyes really hard for a long period of time. I never understood why they made the depth perception so high. But it was neat to play for a while...if exhausting.

The Red/Blue mode in EDuke32 retains colour unlike the original DOS version, though.

It's actually a red/cyan mode (right eye has both green and blue channels), but it definitely loses color information (and if it didn't it would be lost when going through the red/blue glasses anyway).

Regarding the NVidia card exclusivity, I was referring to Marked's post about LCD shutter glasses.
