  1. another of the pre-WoW-clone era of MMO's bites the dust

    04 September 2012 - 10:22 AM

    August 31

This morning we announced that Paragon Studios will be taking to the skies of City of Heroes for the last time.

In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios. Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the world's first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year. As part of this, all recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued effective immediately. We will have more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services and what you can expect in game in the coming weeks.

The team here at Paragon deserves special praise for all that we have accomplished over the last 5+ years. These developers are some of the most creative and talented people in the gaming industry. By now, we've all been given this news internally, but to anyone who may be reading this message after the fact; know that your hard work and dedication has not gone unappreciated or unnoticed. To any potential studios looking to grow your team; hire these people. You won't regret it.

    To our Community,

Thank you. Thank you for your years of support. You've been with us every step of the way, sharing in our challenges, encouraging us to make City of Heroes better, more than everyone else thought it could be. We couldn't have come this far without you. I implore you all, focus on the good things of CoH and Paragon Studios. Don't dwell on the "how" or the "why", but rather join us in celebrating the legacy of an amazing partnership between the players and the development team.

Thank you, and I'll see you in the skies, one last time.

*sigh* I'm running out of MMO's worth my time
  2. Most bizarre game-related glitch I've ever encounterd

    23 July 2012 - 03:05 PM

    The OS is Windows XP.

The game is SWGemu (an emulator for Star Wars Galaxies)

One day I left the game running idle for a couple hours by accident. When I returned to my computer, the game was minimized, and an extra toolbar was now at the top of my desktop screen - showing the contents of "My Documents."

The only way I'm aware of to do this manually, is to right-click on the taskbar, create a new toolbar, and then drag it off the taskbar to the top of the screen. The taskbar would also have to be unlocked to allow for the dragging, which mine wasn't.

So this toolbar just popped up out of nowhere.

I've done a full virusscan, no sign of even a single piece of spyware. I looked at all my files to see if there was any sign of anything unusual being accessed during that time period. All looks normal.

If it was a virus, it'd be really weird that it would do something like that and make itself known. If hackers gained access to my PC through the game (MMO's are notorious for being security holes) it's equally weird that a hacker would do something like that and make their presence known.

I have never seen something like that happen before and the timing seems way too coincidental to be an accident. I leave this PC on all the time and nothing strange has happened, and there's also been no sign of any bizarre behavior since the incident occurred.

    I am REALLY confused.
  3. Attack of the Spiders

    07 June 2012 - 03:18 PM

When consulted, LR Saikia, an ecologist from Dibrugarh University said that the behavior of the spiders, the aggressive jumping and biting of anything that came near, and the fact that many victims described them as large and hairy might indicate that they are a previously unknown species of tarantula.

Who knows how far this is getting overblown. The article goes on to say that it may not actually be the spiders that resulted in deaths. Deadly or not, the implication is still pretty wild. This is right out of a sci-fi horror film.
  4. Voxels

    03 June 2012 - 01:43 PM

So I've been mucking around with the idea of creature designs, and arrived at the conclusion that voxels my be more useful for providing a certain look that simply can't be done as well with sprites or typical polygon models. The idea is to create something that looks like a 3D object made of 'particles' that don't actually touch each other, (like the early Sega mock 3D effects) without going through the process of mathematically aligning a hundred sprites (which based on my earlier experiments, would bog down the engine a lot more).

If anyone here has painted with voxels before, do you have any recommendations for the best editor to use, and what kind of surprises I'm likely to find when I import them into eduke?
  5. SOE has been hacked in addition to the PSN

    03 May 2011 - 02:29 PM

I'm really curious now if SOE's system and PSN are directly linked, or if these are actually two separate cyber attacks. If they are indeed separate, that's pretty scary.
