  1. 8-bit vs. 32-bit and image quality

    12 November 2013 - 06:24 PM

I've been playing The Gate lately and was startled by how much better it looked in 8-bit software mode vs. 32-bit polymost or polymer. I just assumed that OpenGL 32-bit would make any old map look better but I now realize that shading & textures can be quite inferior in 32-bit as opposed to software. Look at these screenshots. The first is 8-bit, the 2nd 32-bit. It actually looks much higher resolution in software.

At what point did maps start taking advantage of 32-bit? But going by this I've decided to play all older maps in 8-bit, else I could be missing out on some nice shading & textures. What's your preferred graphics mode, and why?
  2. Combining usermaps into single episodes

    02 November 2013 - 10:11 AM

I noticed that with Duke Is Ten if you combine the maps in a zip file and use the -gDukeIsTen.zip command line, it shows up in your New Game menu as DUKE IS TEN and you can play the maps as a single episode. Can this be done with other series or collections of Maps i.e. the Red maps? How do I get them to show up as a episode in the New game menu under eduke? I'd like to organize my collections of various usermap series into episodes that I can select in the game menu and play sequentially.
  3. Last map (or TC) you played all the way through and enjoyed

    29 October 2013 - 08:25 AM

Though I haven't played a lot of maps, last one for me was Zykov Eddy's Sunshine Complex. DukePlus version has difficult gameplay (for me anyway) but it's satisfying & fun. I like how wild Eddy gets with his ideas. It just doesn't feel like a boring vanilla experience with the mods I've played of his. I recently downloaded a shit-load of community recommended mods and plan to play many more.
  4. Cfg settings for individual mods/TCs won't save

    23 October 2013 - 05:46 AM

Hi guys. I've been putting various mods/TCs into separate folders within my main eDuke folder, then using the -cfg command in a batch file to load the individual cfg files within those folders. However, when I select various Options within eDuke (i.e. volume levels, vsync on, etc.) the settings will not save after I quit a session and I have to redo each individual Options settings every time I start the mod using the batch file(s) within the main eDuke folder. Is there a way to save Options settings for each individual mod/TC so I don't have to redo each time? Using latest eDuke builds.
  5. Nausea while playing Duke in eDuke & non-HRP

    16 October 2013 - 06:16 PM

I have a Samsung 120Hz monitor and I play mods like Duke Nuken Forever at 1920 X 1080 but I noticed I get nauseous after playing for awhile. This doesn't occur using polymer & the HRP pack, just in OpenGL or software mode. The only way to prevent this is to move the monitor about 4 ft (or more) away. Normally I have it at about 2.5 ft. Does anyone else experience this? Have you found a solution other than playing in a small window or moving the monitor away?
