Duke in 2018?  "What's next?"

Well 2017 gave us 2 Duke Nukem cameos in other games which got "Mixed" reactions among the community and Randy Pitchford shocked the whole Duke community by actually taking some time to talk to us Duke fans about the status and future of Duke which to no one's surprise, resulted in jack shit.

So with 2017 gone and 2018 upon us, can't help but wonder what this new year has in store for Duke.

The voice of the man himself confirmed that there were multiple things in the works for Duke so there is that.
Posted Image

Anyone have any ideas what 2018 will have in store for Duke?

Aside from the inevitable half assed cameos?

I hope we get a real game. Although i think that won’t happen.. I think we are quite a few years away from a new duke game. Keeping my fingers crossed! I’m hoping we see some great mods like DNF and some others come out this year!!

More self promotion by "the voice of Duke Nukem".
More pimping out the character by Gearbox.

If you have nothing good to say, say nothing; well, so they say.
(And I have no positive answer to the OP question.)

@ Maisth - Yes, Randy said so in this interview.

As I wrote, I have nothing positive to say about this. :(

As a business type of guy, if I gave up based on his lame excuses, I would be on the Street, begging for change, or worse working as a slave cleaning toilets.

Just give us a proper 3-episode pack with new enemies and weapons too in the level of the Netherdrone, the Queen and an actual couple of new weapons (not re-coloured bullshit).
Moder games suck anyway, we just want more DN3D content, quality and not half assed.

There’s no way they’ll do that after the terrible sales of World Tour.

Also, we need to find a way for Duke to move forward, not to keep living in the past.

I'm not sure Duke is going to be in Borderlands, I don't think it's that huge of a promotional opportunity (BL fans don't care about Duke, Duke fans don't care about BL). What I would be betting money on is that Duke is going to be in that sorta-kinda competitive multiplayer shooter Gearbox is developing now.

Didn't Gearbox already try something like that with Battleborn?

Nope, so far they put Duke into Bulletstorm and let the devs of Wild Buster (some MOBA-esque MMO that also has Serious Sam in it) to use the character too. I don't think they'd try this with Battleborn, that game is dead as a rock.

Anyway I don't think it's such a bad idea to put Duke into games where he can fit in because the character's less serious parody aspect can work well with that concept, I just hope they won't overdo it. That Project 1v1 stuff (GBX's competitive FPS) seems pretty bad too based on what people are saying about it, it's not something like Quake or UT but a weird 1-on-1 shooter with PlanetSide weapons and a card game aspect slapped onto it. That's gonna bomb too if that's the case, I just don't see the market for a game like that (man, the heyday of Borderlands went by fast).

But hey, maybe if GBX goes bankrupt (and why wouldn't they, they are terrible as of late) Bethesda buys the IP (they seem to like this old school shooter thing :D) and some competent developer like MachineGames or Arkane makes a good Duke game. :D Oh, and if they'd want to include Duke in some other game Quake Champions is the perfect place to do that.

Wasn't Duke sort of already in Borderlands? In a trailer or something in the foreground walking by.

I meant the genre in general.

I disagree in that everyone views Duke as this sex-obsessed parody. IMO Duke needs to dial back the parody aspect.

I dunno, that's a hard thing to judge in my opinion, mostly because of market standards. I mean the original Duke 3D Duke wouldn't really work these days because there is not much character to him. You can solve that two ways, the first one: giving him a character and a bit more serious tone that could recapture how we viewed him - mostly in our imagination - back in the day. The other way is that you do not give him a real character and crank up the parody aspect of Duke 3D so Duke works kind of as "the asshole of the gaming industry": a big, dumb douchebag, the king of dick jokes and poking fun at other games.

The first approach would be more suited for a proper Duke game I guess but I kinda like "Gearbox Duke" too as he is in DNF and Bulletstorm + I think that would be more unique in today's market. "Gearbox Duke" works for me, with Jon St. John's slightly altered delivery he always manages to get a chuckle out of me, his voice is just out of this world funny that way... but the thing is that the current iteration of that is just too dumb. If it's a parody about video games and the game industry then it should be smarter and bolder: I don't want to see only dick jokes and game references, I want to see Duke smashing up fucking loot boxes, poking fun at microtransactions, basically giving smart satire of gaming as it is now in his own harsh way. Pack that into a game that feels like the natural evolution of Duke 3D, has a lot of colour and explosive combat in it and I'm in.

That's a unique flavour of FPS we don't have right now and I think something more serious would feel too much like the current iteration of BJ Blazkowicz and Doom guy. Also Blazko is one of the most well-written characters in an FPS to date and that's pretty hard to top.

More Allen Blum material like his great levels for e5, the re-release of Gambini's and Mikko's awesome DNF mod as planned, Ion Maiden (I consider it as a Duke material), and of course the betas if it gets greenlighted.

I'm still working my way through Duke Forever but based on what I've played so far, I agree that they have to dial back the sexual aspect but not the parody aspect altogether. I'm with Zaxx in that they should spoof modern gaming trends exactly in the manner that he described. Duke Forever is just stupidly pornographic and it doesn't really serve any purpose.

I'm not entirely caught up on the Gearbox drama but Duke doesn't seem to have much of a future with them at the helm. They seem to absolutely detest their player base. I only found out a few days ago that console was disabled in Forever apparently to prevent or stifle modding. This is the first time that I've ever heard of a game developer doing something like that. Also considering how much hatred there is against Forever, I feel like the series can only go up from there so why not release a new game and avoid the mistakes that were made last time?

Micky is right that we gotta move forward. New official Duke 3D campaigns could be cool but on the other hand, new maps should just be left up to the fans at this point similarly to how Doom mappers are still releasing new content and continuously pushing the envelope. I'm not into the idea of another terrible Duke 3D release at a steep markup and while I liked some things like the new lighting in World Tour, it was still a pretty terrible release with regard to issues like atrocious mouse controls and a very impractical weapon switching system.

Not sure that I agree that Bethesda would do the series any justice either. I guess they would be a hell of a lot better than Gearbox and they would probably provide the resources for a proper Duke comeback but I just don't agree with many of their recent business practices or game design choices. Doom 4 and the new Wolfenstein games have demonstrated that there is absolutely still a place for well-made single player shooters so Duke should make a resurgence but again, it's never gonna happen with Gearbox and we're not going to get any good news this year.

Even if something as good or even better than Duke Nukem 3D were released this year, the public image of Duke is so far down the toilet that it would flop either ways.

Unfortunately, I think the success of the Duke franchise died with the release of Forever.

I am really hoping that Randy will deliver on his promise. That he has actually worked on things to get sorted and will give us DNF test builds (+level editor etc..) in 2018.

I am feeling very generous today. So I will give him this whole 1 year. If within 2018 nothing of his promises has been fullfilled, then I know not to trust in his words from there on.

Well, I would love to see more new content for Duke Nukem 3D. But then again, who would buy it, except for us, the hardcore Duke 3D fans.

So, the first thing they should do, in my opinion, is to patch World Tour so it would include the 3 authorized add-ons, fix the final boss and the awful weaponwheel. This would be for free off course. If Gearbox wants to have our trust and revamp their reputation, this should be their first priority.

I'm probably in a minority here but I'll re-state what I thought in one of the many previous threads about this subject.

I would like to see Duke out of his past environments. No more space stations. No more moon bases. No more of the same group of aliens.
I want to see Duke in a Horror/Survival game. Or transported back in time to a Kingpin styled game. Just something different please. Duke can still be humorous and sexist, but back down on each just a little.

Oh, and make it user friendly for modding. Thats a huge bonus.

Sunstorm Interactive should make a comeback to Duke and make another season-themed addon. :D

I don't think that Horror/Survival game + Duke Nukem is a good match. Mr. Nukem is loud, over-the-top alien ass-kicker, not some hide-n-seek sissy!
As far as different genres goes, I would like to see the reboot of Duke Nukem: Endangered Species, i.e. a hunting simulator.

If I was Randy, I would be pushing hard to bring Duke3D into augmented reality. Have the player interact with CG in their native environment and call it Duke World Conquest. Maybe the game could be played on a point based system. Every Alien killed awards the player with experience points and kill points. Experience points would go towards the upgrading of new weapons, gear & hotter virtual babes. The kill points would dictate the enemy difficulty and level progression. When Duke reaches a certain amount of kill points a Duke Boss would be spawned. I've always liked the idea of augmented reality, but this would definitely modernize Duke in the right direction. It would be extra special if they could be the first to implement this technology properly cause from what I have heard it is still really bad. I'm not too sure how Multi-player would work though, maybe if the game was capable of switching between virtual reality and augmented reality that would be a sweet mix for the sake of multi-player gaming.

I'm sure that's not true, I don't think DNF is something anyone could or should judge by how much Duke is worth. Gearbox has never made a Duke game before, they or any other developer they would outsource the project to pretty much has a clean slate. All we need is a good game.

This. I refuse to believe the franchise is dead. The brand "Duke Nukem" is too big for that.

I remember a few years back thinking the same thing about the Mortal Kombat franchise. After MK3 the series went downhill and we got some abhorrent releases as MK Mythologies, MK Special Forces, MK Armageddon, ... Till 2011 when the new Mortal Kombat reboot was both a critical and commercial success.

I'm sure there are other examples as well. It all starts with a "good" game.

Mortal Kombat is actually a perfect example of this. So many years of terrible titles that weren't even worthy of the bargain bin and when MK9 was announced as a return to form, there was so much excitement around it. MK10 continued the success of the reboot. Duke isn't dead. If anything, there has never been a more perfect time to release another game. Doom 4 and Wolfenstein have demonstrated that the market is still open to a good single player FPS as long as it's executed well. I don't even think that Wolfenstein is as legendary as Duke or Doom in terms of mainstream appeal, yet it managed to make a big splash.
