Why are they normal mapping 32 pixel textures? :D :D

JSJ's voicesovers seem a bit flat. It's glaring that they didn't re-do the weapons sounds. Now they sound really out of place. To do some of it and leave some results in a very weird mix.

The new voiceovers sound like Duke is a grandpa who wants to be cool. JSJ could do better I think.

I wonder who will be the final boss of the new episode (if there is a new boss).

+1

When I heard this, I wasn't sure if it's comedy or not but it seems like JSJ may have just had too free hands with his voicing. It sounds like he may have had so much fun in making these, that he forgot how it would compare to Duke3D where he was originally very critically directed and even had to say the lines with his teeth clinched the whole time.

It's one thing if Jon really can't do it the same way, but the other if he doesn't want to. If it's the latter then he dropped the ball on that one and his judgement sucks. And Gearbox once again provided him the freedom to do so, like they did in DNF. I don't want to criticise Jon once again, but I'm really against any revisionism. Do whatever voice you want for the new episode or new game, but the old one was done and should remain as is. Or at least provide the ability to switch to "purist"/original version. The only direction for the re-recording should have been "be identical to the original".

Maaan, these "Ahhh" while being hurt and "uh-huh" when "interacting" with the wall are downright terrible.

Tell me about it.

If I'm forced to choose wether I play it ON or OFF, then I probably would choose to mute it. That just.. it's DNF. It goes way too over the top. Duke3D should be serious with just occasional subtle hint of comedy.

The sound quality is on the level of a mod.
It doesn't sound like Duke anymore. It sounds like Jon St. John.

At parts it sounds more off the mark than in DNF, like with the screams. Just how?

That line is perfect lol... Remember the first time I heard him say that with that tone after I killed that (indeed annoying) thing... Made me laugh, it was dark comedy style. Didn't seem forced at all...

He did a perfect Duke voice up to Manhattan Project. Even though I liked Forever it seems he lost it a little from there... Bad direction by Gearbox or?

Guys, it's not that the addition of new sounds made the old sounds seem bad in comparison, it's that the old sounds actually sound worse than they did in the original game.

The game description says it has "1 new enemy" called "Firefly", so unless it's kept secret, which I doubt, there isn't going to be a new boss... Honestly, the art team couldn't even seem to make a simple plant pot sprite fit in with DN3D (I mean, just look at it...), so a new boss sound ridiculous. "Firefly" is probably even an old enemy given a red palette or some shit like that, like a red palette Newbeast with wings.

I'd say the Rome colesseum is probably the boss map but that's just a wild guess.

I hope there is a secret 9th map as well, but it's the kind of hope that I'm sure will be unfullfilled. Probably gonna be a new episode with no secret map and no new boss, but at least we have 8 maps by the original level designers.

There hasn't been a single screenshot of the Paris level so far, and I'm honestly pretty excited about it, being French and all that, I wonder how it's going to be like. Probably something along the lines of the Champ Elysee, and the Arc de Triomphe (like in usermap Roch 7), just like in video game Onimusha 3 which I absolutely love because of it. Would be super cool. The Eiffel Tower is very unlikely to be seen in a Build game, Levellord or not. Probably just in the skybox.

Now that I'm done nitpicking every inch of a pixel of every screenshot and video, I'm actually starting to be excited of what could be good in this.

I disagree there, but everybody digs different stuff. It was mentioned that Manhattan Project was a favorite for voice-acting, I think he sounds better here. I do think the scream sounds and stuff like that are hilarious/silly and need to be fixed by release, and we'll always compare the lines to the iconic original versions. But for me looking at these lines as lines in any Duke game, like say DNF or Planet of the Babes etc, it sounds like Duke usually sounded in high quality recordings.

"Come get some" for example, what's wrong with his delivery of that here? Sounds great to me. "Ooh, I needed that" also sounds good. "That's one doomed space marine" sounded perfect, one of my favs, etc. The smooth audio quality Duke of all the spin-off games etc after Duke 3D is just a different thing than the audio in Duke 3D. I dig both, and this sounds like Duke in every other Duke game after Duke 3D to me. "Who wants some?" "Groooovy", most of the lines sound great to me.

Jon St. John's normal speaking voice is very different from what he sounds like here, so I don't see why you'd consider this to just sound like him. Do you guys not like Duke's voice in the classic DNF trailers for example? Just curious, because that too is the smooth talking Duke, not the lo-fi gritty Clint Eastwood of Duke 3D (which also is cool). And even in the different sounding style, Duke 3D also has some of the smooth sound of Duke for some lines. Though the sound quality adds grit to it.

"Always bet on Duuuuuke" from the classic trailers, I really dig that version of Duke. And that's the Duke we hear here for most lines in my opinion. Nothing can replace the original, we'll still always play that with eduke32 most I'm sure. But I dig this for what it is, other than the issues I agree should be fixed up.

More like no direction by Gearbox or no one else either for that matter.

DNF randy let JSJ basically just do by himself because randy isn't apprently ambicious enough. Anyone remember the stream from yesterday? He was just like "I mean come on, I own the Duke Nukem franchise".

TerminX said he gave them the spritesheet of an enemy from the Duke 3D Betas since they originally just had an Enforcer or Assault Trooper with a mohawk in place.
I'm guessing it's the one you can see most commonly in Hendricks' unlisted Duke Beta video, the looks would fit the name. Definitely not a new boss though.

Regarding the sounds, it's both really. The new lines and the old sounds already clash horribly, but they somehow managed to make them sound even worse than in the original too.

I love absolutely everything about every DNF trailer/version uptil 2003 but I'm not gonna go into detail on that to keep this on topic.

edit: but this honestly doesn't sound like how he did in the old DNF trailers.

"That's what I call a close encounter!", but it is hard to compare because even that 98 trailer has kind of low audio quality/clarity. I do think it sounds like Duke in most other Duke games though. Maybe if this had less clarity it'd seem more gritty and fit with what some fans are expecting. And that said, I do agree some of the stuff needs to be fixed up.

The very first enemies he comes across I'd guess.

For some reason the sounds in the new Gearbox game, with that ultra low sample rate, remind me of the N64 version. The FIRELASER even has the more "twangy" attack like the N64. You don't think they used the wrong set of files or something do you? Or maybe somehow obtained and used the N64 source and that's how compatibility got broken? I mean, weren't there even shots of the N64 version in prototype where there appeared to be red dynamic lights in E1L1?

Who knows. I doubt this is the case, but whatever, I was bored and thought I'd write random crap on the forum for a moment.

Won't be buying this, don't have money spare anyway and if I did I'd rather not give it to Gearbox. Sorry to the old devs and such, is there any way I can send them money directly?

Edit: Y'know, I'd rather play the version in the above video, I'd gladly hand over money for that.

The sound is likely the way it is because it's using a re-sampling/interpolation filter of some sort, instead of leaving the sounds aliased when playing at a higher sampling rate.

Also, about the new dialogue, I think the main issue with it, is Jon puts too much emphasis on the last syllable of words, or just says the line too slowly. Instead of "Groovy"... it's more like "Grooooovyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy"

Can we buy the original version anymore?

The answer to the question why they had to temper with the original game so much has yet to be given. Why bother re-recording Duke talk if not all sounds get replaced so it ends up being an incoherent mess? Where is the courage to come forward with a NEW title for the franchise? Why mess around with yet another port (or port variation) when we already got EDuke32 which is pretty much all that is needed?

The return of Blum, Levelord and Lee is the real highlight of this release and may be the only reason for a purchase from my side. Whether that will be for 20 bucks is questionable, however...

So we got showcase of developer commentary:

What do you think of it? I hope they will go more into technological and game design topics as Source engine games do.

I really do think we'll get a new Duke game too, especially now that Battleborn has been out for a few months and they know it's not a hit. Seemed Gearbox was busy dealing with that. Agreed the new episode is by far why I'm so excited for this.

Developer commentary is a cool feature, is that Allen Blum talking with Randy in that clip? Wonder if Levelord will be on some of the levels commentaries too.

Yeah, Blum designed Hollywood Holocaust and the majority of Episode 1 as well as most of Episode 2. I guess Levelord gets the voice in Episode 3 since he did most of the maps there. Will be interesting to see Episode 4 since there's a lot of folks packed in there.
