Google 'Randy Pitchford' and discover why people carry hate towards him. Everything from questionable business practices to claiming that people who don't like his games are masochists, lying about the most pointless shit. It's worth a quick read through. I typically avoid carrying hate as it's not worth the effort but Randy is far from a class act.

This is also part of why I severely dislike Randy.

He also:

  • Thinks he's above criticism, even constructive criticism. (Just about any time someone criticizes a gearbox game, he throws a temper tantrum & takes no responsibility.)
  • Has cussed out polite fans with legitimate concerns. (When someone spoke to him about A:CM's shortcomings, in a civil manner)
  • Has a shit sense of humor. (See Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel... a lot of it is just meme references and pandering)
  • Committed plagiarism. (See Borderlands)
  • Is spineless and flip-flops on just about every issue imaginable... (Can be seen constantly on Twitter)

Just to name a few other reasons.

Ideally a team working on a Duke game will feature people like a lead designer, writer etc who aren't Randy, and Randy being open to letting them do their thing. And also ideally Randy likes and appreciates Duke as is, and doesn't feel a need to meddle.

I can see why people would be concerned, but I'm sure plenty of good game studios have some annoying personalities on board too. Randy is just more vocal and we know about it more. But I don't see why Duke need be synonymous with Randy. Though it was fun in the old days when it was always synonymous with George, and also joking around with Joe on the old forum.

Anyways, I choose to (perhaps blindly) have some faith that a new and groovy Duke game will be coming down the pike. And at least going by that Duke twitter account, his love of strippers and bosomy women is still in tact, and I don't see them taking that away. I agree that I'd like a Duke game to keep it's machismo and over-the-top elements that may offend an SJW, but I do think it's possible Duke will retain that, despite what tweets or arguments Randy has gotten into.

Plus as mentioned before, GTA5 is the one of the biggest hits ever, and it has more over-the-top content than any Duke game. And since Duke is in satirical/comedic wheelhouse like GTA (though Duke can get serious too, but then again so can GTA) I think that also gives it extra leeway with the critics. But also ultimately, it's for the gamers/fans, not for the critics. But hopefully some of them get it too.

Sega PR manager Matt Eyre said he confronted Gearbox about its leaks, and was told they were a result of Pitchford “doing whatever the fuck he likes”.

Still one of my personal favorites: https://www.engadget...arbox-software/

"And, if you can believe it, that's the story of how Gearbox Software® got its name!"

– Randy Pitchford, CEO and co-founder, Gearbox Software®

Quote

Update: Well, we just heard from PR and they confirmed that the story is a fabrication.

He did once save DNF from oblivion and helped Allen Blum and others though, to give the devil his due. I forget what the details were on the publisher lawsuit with 3DR for not having a game to release, after 3DR had to fire their development team. Would 3DR and Duke in general really be cooked if Randy and Gearbox didn't step in and buy it, bringing Allen and the other 3DR guys who were working on the game from their homes into the Gearbox building (Triptych Games)?

I'm not sure what the other outcomes or options would have been, but I'd rather have a studio such as Gearbox own 3DR over some faceless corporation like Time Warner (WB games or something), or EA, etc. And being a smaller company with a bigger stake in Duke, I feel the license is actually less likely to sit on a shelf forever, and I feel they have more to prove by putting out a groovy new Duke game. But I do tend to be optimistic/hopeful when it comes to the future of Duke, because when all we have is speculation, why not.

Since then, he's sat on it for five years, and now we're getting something that I personally consider cool. With a strong possibility of a new Duke game in a few years. Surely the track record so far is better than what 3DR had done with it say post 2000? (Though Manhattan Project was 2002 to be fair) They spent a long time and ultimately didn't make it to the finish line, until Gearbox helped.

We waited for 3DR's next Duke game actively for well over a decade. When Gearbox gets to that point I'll call them on it, but for now I'm optimistic.

What if 3D Realms hadn't run out of money? Let's say in theory they had infinite funds. What would have happened?

Ideally? Maybe we would've gotten a similar game to the one we got, since they decided to cut for shipping to actually finish it to some degree. And maybe if they had unlimited money, they could've added another year of dev time or something, and had even more content in the game, more stuff in the levels to mess with etc.

Though if they literally had infinite funds, it's possible George would have scrapped it again and started a new version on another engine, and done so every few years for the next 100 years. :P It just seems once they began DNF, George and Scott just weren't quite up to the task of handling this big ambitious game, as good as their intentions were.

Still would have been in better hands than Gearbox.

Technically speaking, the key 3DR devs (Allen Blum [guy who worked on every Duke game] etc at Tryptch games) are in the Gearbox building and are friendly with them, right? So for all we know those key 3DR people could get to work on the next Duke game anyway.

Wasn't the cut for shipping done because the money was starting to get low?

At that stage in 2009 there was actually direction with the development of the game, it would have been completed in a more coherent and higher quality manner than the end result which was rushed by Triptych and Gearbox and constructed from the cobbled together parts of the game that were the most completed. It probably would have been longer, had a better score, better dialogue and narrative, been better paced, and just better overall but still pale in comparisons to the expectations of people and still gimped for consoles unless the possibility arose that community feedback was negative enough to necessitate retooling the game to have the previous system of carrying all weapons.

Most of the changes by 3D Realms themselves were to accompany the restrictive nature of that generations consoles, the changes by Triptych and Gearbox in addition to that were extremely comprehensive in order to deliver something playable. It's clear and has been confirmed by several developers in the past that what was delivered is a far cry from what 3D Realms were working on in May 2009 being more of a frankenstein-esque cobbling together of the most competed segments of the game with a narrative written around it.

It still wouldn't have been what we hoped for and people would still have been disappointed but I honestly believe the game would have been better overall, plus there'd probably be mod tools as 3D Realms always promised them and delivered SDKs/mod tools with the majority of their titles whereas Gearbox doesn't give a shit about modding. At that stage it would have still of been a let down but higher quality overall. Though this is all my opinion the information we have seems to align to that with the single player portion of the game being hastily put together by Triptych when 3DR released its development team.

Few will agree with me here because of the hatred towards him but Broussard knows Duke. I would want a Duke game with George and Scott at the helm but assisted by producers with an actual plan to deliver a game in a reasonable timeframe. It'll never happen but eh, maybe Gearbox will release something that isn't absolutely fucked.

True that could be a factor, but it also seemed George expressed that it had been a ridiculously long development time at that point.

For the record I don't hate George, far from it. Just I think the dev time and what we've heard speaks for itself. So I'm just saying, in defense of the possibilities of Duke's future, I feel like his chances now are better than they were at 3DR.

And that said, I'm looking forward to the new 3DR's Bombshell FPS. And the rumored Sin game, if that's a real thing.

Yes to both of these. Bombshell FPS looks awesome from what has been shown off so far, if 3DR/Interceptor have a hand in SiN I'm actually excited for that given Fred is supposedly a huge fan of the franchise and a straight up remake or polished re-release would be sweet, and Rise of the Triad 2013 was actually fairly good despite some technical and aesthetic shortcomings. I didn't mind Bombshell either but the levels were way too stretched out, the dialogue was crap - sort of felt like someone had written a pretty cool sci-fi story and someone else had come in and changed it and written a crap script around it, and a few other minor things (drawn out executions, terrible one-liners, etc..). I did find it fun to play in short bursts with the dialogue turned down though, bowling bombs are fun though I did feel like the thing should have been a third person shooter the whole time I was playing it...it honestly felt like a third person shooter with a top down camera to me..maybe I'm alone on that one. :P

Being overly optimistic I'm hoping whatever Gearbox is cooking up is good and leads to something NEW, not a new episode/re-release but an actual new Duke game and they've taken a level of notice of the community to fix some of the more complained about aspects of the game (the humor, the weapon limit, the real dumb shit)

He bought the asset, not saved it from oblivion. He bought the whole IP and then acquired everything related to it. I don't know what the deal was and how fair it was, but with DNF being in that situation surely wouldn't have helped 3DR in raising the price.

Fred is supposedly a fan of everything old-school.

Randy just proved Gearbox can't make a worthy Duke Nukem 5 today on Twitter.

Someone this easily offended by a joke can not make a male power fantasy game full of gratuitous T&A, middle fingers, masculinity and zero f**ks given about women's rights.

Gearbox looking for a different developer is definitely the right call, they need a developer who doesn't have an oversensitive SJW in charge.

Someone seriously thought that Gearbox can make good Duke Nukem game before? Really?

Come on, they will never be able to make Duke Nukem game because they never did something worthwhile except two HL expansion packs, everyone knew that including Gearbox themselves. Hell, they can't even make old Duke 3D re-release right, they would lose a lot of money without TX (he's helping them, right? Please tell me he does) and their hired level-designers help. Lack of SJW crap alone can't make Gearbox good, though we have to be happy that we won't suffer from Burch writing in the next Duke game (although considering "Bazinga" meme in upcoming DN3D re-release, shit writing could be there, hopefully they scrap it).
