By the way, whoever wants to host RTCM should make sure to remove all the warez from it. Hosting full versions of games that are sold on Steam and GOG like it's perfectly OK to do so is a liability.

I agree on that topic, did you do the same to your archive?

TerminX, take your mono nut and shove it up your ass. I said remove my files and my folder structure and delete all rtcm content from the server, there is no public reduplication allowed. Last time , You do not have my permission to mirror the site in part or in whole.

Should we talk about how you suck balls to moderate on the 3DR forum back in the day.

What a mess.
This is why I locally host my own stuff. Might be slower, but I call the shots. :D

I have a solution:

Corvin wants to run his site on a different host again, this is fine.

You seem to want to "preserve" all of the files he has dug up and put on his site. ( and they are many )

So, go ahead and keep a copy of all the files the site has - On a harddrive, offline.

If RTCM ever goes offline and doesn't return... supplement the file loss with the saved files providing you are still online at this point in time.

Situation fixed.

So while RTCM is still online, simply provide a link to his site. This way, his site will still receive the rightful traffic for the files instead of being split in two places.

Or we could stop pretending that RTCM isn't already a mirror archive.

Do you realize how many hours of scouring the internet it took to save and re-host those files?
From many websites that are dead and gone. RTCM has been doing a fantastic resource service for years in this capacity.

Everyone who can should host as much build content as possible. It's not any one persons right to horde, no matter how well or long they have done so.

I'd prefer the files to be hosted in more than one location, especially since all rtcm links on Google are now broken so people looking for them probably think they are lost.

Ok, well if you're hell bent on keeping the archive, it should be made very clear that it's a back-up archive from all the files on RTCM (provide link to RTCM) and then name Corvin/Usurper etc.. for their efforts.

And don't really "advertise" the archive page(s) to ensure more traffic to the true RTCM page. If RTCM ever goes tits-up.. advertise the page.

Did you even look at the backup...?

So what's the problem here? It's not like he lost all this hard work.

If you painted a painting for years and then you put it in storage.
During storage, somebody came along and photocopied it for their own gallery(traffic) w/no permission, would you be pleased?

You have zero authority over the files. They are not yours.

Your analogy sucks. Corvin made not just a gallery, but a compendium of others' works. The works are not his. We are preserving these works, in a form more like a warehouse than a museum. Corvin is credited on the front door for compiling them.

This isn't about traffic. There are no e-peen points at stake here. This shouldn't be about ego. This is about the files.

You mean like Corvin hosts files from mods that many people here have worked on which he copied, rehosted, and redistributed without permission?

And here I am saying he should definitely be allowed to keep those files around for archival purposes, but according to you the file mirrors are somehow "new art".

In this case it is quite literally just a backup of the hosted files, for the same reason Corvin rehosted them - So there was more than once source because more sources are more reliable.

Let's say the content was the paint used and the image it created is the hours invested.

It's not the content that is in question. It's the man hours put into creating the overall equation.

How does Corvin feel about this? - He is clearly displeased.

Without his countless hours of work, you wouldn't be talking about this right now. Because it wouldn't exist.
Maybe then you'd have to spend days of your life scouring the web for it and you might then appreciate the effort it took.

Well f*ck my a$$ then, it's already been done.

Still though, take it up with Corvin, I don't think he wanted it this way.

In reality I think it's fine. It is however not my content and thus the ultimate desicion is up to corvin in regards to this data.

I appreciate the effort, but it doesn't mean he can claim ownership and deny what he doesn't entitled to. And that's not even mentioning that I'm all for free information and stuff and wouldn't mind someone copying my work as long as I'm credited, for which Corvin is.

It bears repeating: It is not his data in terms of intellectual property ownership, and there is no other concept of property rights for digital data that would prohibit copying.

Well I guess if you're going to post something, you should have the author's authority then. Guess we gotta go back and confirm usage rights with every author of every map/mod/art whatever.

This will be a tedious task..
