Running Duke3D v1.4 Under DosBox ?  "How to get the CD drive recognised"

#1

As I've been wondering if there was some important (annoying even) differences between ye olde DOS Duke3D and Eduke, I thought I'd try and install my old Duke V1.4 from my CD. Now, the game won't run unless it can detect the CD so I mount the drive using

MOUNT D D:\ -t cdrom

Unfortunately, the game doesn't detect the cdrom even though I can change to a directory on the CD from withing DosBox, so it is definitely mounted.

Anybody know how to fix this ?

Not sure if this will work, since it's been awhile that i've used dosbox. Try drag and dropping the setup file in your dosbox.exe, i seem to recall that dosbox will do the job then for you.
Good luck.

Skulldog's DOSBox Duke Nukem Launcher is your only friend The Mechanic: http://buildgamedosb...x-launcher.html

Very helpful tool.

With some versions you could bypass that check by creating a dummy CDROM.INI file in that directory.

The issue is not with installing - though the Duke DosBox launcher looks interesting none the less. It is the duke3d.exe that exits during initialisation because it doesn't think the cdrom is in the drive.

Just tried the CDROM.INI idea but no joy I'm afraid.

Minor update : It is duke 1.5, not 1.4 as I originally thought.

Many DOS games that required the original CD-ROM to be in the drive relied on recognizing the CD-ROM label. Check the label of your Duke3D CD, then mount it in DOSBox with
mount d D:\ -t cdrom -label <whatever label your CD has; maybe DUKE3D?>

[Edit] Here's a topic at VOGONS where someone apparently had a similar issue:

The proposed solution there is as follows:

Ripsaw8080 is correct. Duke Nukem 3D 1.5 Atomic version needs to be able to locate the 'Support' folder from the CD. Whether this is accomplished by mounting an image of the CD or just copying the files over to your hard drive does not matter, but you do need to modify the CDROM.INI file so that it points to the path for this folder.

I use an iso image to mount my CD as drive D:\. First I created a batch file that I use within DOSBox to mount the image as follows:

imgmount d C:\CD\ATOMIC15.iso -t iso
call duke3d
mount -u d

For the command lines above, use the path within DOSBox, not the actual path.

Example: I have the iso stored in C:\DOSBoxRoot\CD\ on my hard drive, but when I run DOSBox, I mount C:\DOSBoxRoot\ as C:\, this means that my batch file needs to locate the iso image file in C:\CD\

Next you need to modify the CDROM.INI file in your Duke 3D folder so that it can locate the 'Support' folder on the CD as follows:

D:\support\

Be sure to include the trailing back slash at the end. If I recall, the game will not be able to locate the folder if its not there.

I hope this helps.

Edit:

The method outlined above also works for NAM/Napalm, and WWII GI

Or you can grab a copy of Watcom and recompile the source without the CD check like I did.

@MrFlibble (ah, fellow Dwarfer ?) Many thanks for seeking out the instructions. I was about to try it when :-

You can also use a NO-CD crack .... hope I didn't break any rules by posting a crack but this seems to be the best method for retail copies of Atomic Edition ....

Before the Duke source code was released I'm sure posting a crack would be very much be a bannable offence (and rightly too) but with the source code officially released yonks ago then I see no prob posting a crack any more - the need-the-CD-detected functionality is only hurting people like me who bought the original CD all them years ago !. So, I downloaded it and yay, it worked :-) And now I can record demo's in camstudio which was half the point of running the old CD version.

Cool.
