The Escaped Convicts Richard Matt and David Sweat
#1 Posted 28 June 2015 - 08:14 AM
The problem with this story, unlike Alcatraz and Shawshank, is that these two guys are convicted murderers, which kind of makes me not want to route for them. Still, the story is amazing.
Of course police Friday confronted Richard Matt and told him to drop his 20 gauge shotgun. He didn't point it at the officers, but he refused to drop it and said "you won't take me alive" (at least that is the story we are getting from police). So police shot him. That's suicide by cop.
David Sweat is still on the run, and has not been sighted, and dogs have not picked up his scent.
Is Sweat even in that 20 square mile circle that cops have surrounded? Can he live in that harsh environment of the Adirondack mountains, especially with it raining and cold? Or did he split up with Matt before the cops got to Matt, and is Sweat far away by now? The whole thing is damn interesting I thought I would see what others think about this story?
A huge blunder by the convicts; when they emerged from the manhole cover which has to be the world's greatest escape, and the women didn't show up to get them...they didn't seem to have a plan B! And even though at that point that had to go on foot, they COULD of been to Canada before even being discovered missing! Canada is only 10 miles north of the Clinton Maximum security prison, and It took the prison 5 hours to discover them gone! Anybody can run 10 miles in 5 hours!
Clinton Maximum security prison was built during the president Tyler Administration. That was 20 years before Lincoln was President! Maybe it is a tad old and made it easier to escape from? There are a lot of questions about this interesting prison break. What do you guys think, any theories?

It seems they had a bunch of candy with them, and were surviving on that. The cabin they broke into had Peanut Butter, they were eating that. They were on the run for 3 weeks, and two of them it was miserable with rain, had to take it's toll.

They are talking movie and book deals already on MSNBC for Sweat. A mini TV series has already...ALREADY been in the making about this!

56 degrees and raining in upstate NY. It's almost July for shit's sake! Upstate NY or anywhere in the NE is NOT where I would EVER want to be! Thank God I'm in Tennessee.
Thank God for the South!

Why does everyone always blame the drug?

Because there is a pattern. And no, it's not just because crazy people tend to take more drugs. It's specifically after they start taking it.

Implying that because I took SSRIs a few years ago, I should by definition have gone out and shot up a daycare.

Dumb logic. Some people need these to function. Just because the medications are improperly managed, it doesn't mean that they don't have a purpose or benefit when used properly.

You said "fire and gasoline" in parallel to Mblackwell's statement about "the drug and improper care". I assumed you meant that the drug was the fire and that improper care was the gasoline.

Just curious. Also if they were bullied during their childhood, had a mental illness or abused by a family member, or something. I also heard David Sweat's father abused him and was mean to him.

Not to mention the for-profit prison industry.

In the American justice system, the focus is always on the victim when crimes are committed, from setting bail to impact statements to sentencing. Court trials have become a show where the focus is placed less on finding justice for all parties, and instead on finding justice for the victims at all costs.

Yep, it's sad. Can't just have a thread about a great escape. Oh, no. It has to turn into an argument about whether drugs cause crime or gay marriage or some other topic that has already been beaten to death a million times.

Of course the guys are bad, Matt killed a couple of guys and chopped one up, the other guy killed a cop 20 years ago. Sweat, the guy who killed the cop, is the one who was captured. I don't know if he repented or what not, but he is still bad. Yet, there is something exciting about a great prison break. It's like Mafia movies or Heist movies....we wouldnt do that stuff, and those are all bad guys, but we love those kind of movies.
Sweat is making a mistake...he is singing like a bird. Telling about the woman who was supposed to pick them up is one thing, but now he is spilling beans about heroin rings in the prison and 20 guards that might of been complicit in that (they are ALL on suspension). He is talking about all the stuff going on in the prison that is making it lax...and to other prisoners, that makes him a rat. The respect he gained by this amazing escape...his rock star status to the other prisoners across the nation...has deflated into the figure of a snitch, a rat fink.
On top of that by telling everything...he has blown any chance to make deals. Bad mistake.
