So, and this is all hypothetical, if Gearbox now owns everything Duke related and own all the digital versions and rights, they can choose to stop allowing mod support for Duke3D, right?
I can see them specifically frowning at sourceports, but I am speaking completely ignorantly.

I don't think they have the right (or if they did, the ability) to stop people making and releasing content for Duke 3D and eduke32.

The source code was already released under a license. Correct me if I'm wrong but there's nothing anyone can do about that anymore. Also, it may be for Duke, but technically source ports are variants of the Build engine, something Gearbox cannot touch?

Or am I completely wrong?

I've been in contact with a few people at Gearbox since the change in ownership of Duke Nukem 3D and I can tell you they definitely aren't looking to squash the community, nor are they just going to sit on the rights to the game and do nothing with it.

I'm 50/50 on that TerminX I don't really trust Gearbox.

What other purpose could there be for a video game IP other than generating revenue from sales of the game(s)? Conversely, there is absolutely no financial gain in removing said game from sale and antagonizing the players' community.

As you know, actions will go farther than words.

Thanks for sharing this, but I still believe if they were sincere, you would not be the one telling us this... they would already have made a statement. If a company is going to bother with a community, communication is critical, and must be very timely. But then when I think about it, if this entire fan base was gone tomorrow, it would not have any effect on GearBox at all. We really "don't matter" financially, in my opinion.

If they do any type of fan service I will be completely caught off guard because it means someone went against the accounting department. (think DNF Mod Tools.)

They don't need to make an statement because nobody - except half a dozen people on a obscure internet forum - cares. And if they did, it would still mean nothing since it was proved a hundred times already that they don't mind lying through their teeth.
Then again, I don't see how this would benefit them.

Make a statement about what, exactly? If they don't have a product they're ready to announce or plans they're ready to share, there is no statement to make. I'm just expressing my opinion that they have no intention of making Duke Nukem 3D fans hate them. I was really very pleasantly surprised that they reached out to me at all. I have a lot of things going on that rely on being friendly with the guys who own the Duke3D IP, so it's a huge relief to me to be able to say that currently, I personally am not worried about Gearbox.

But, this is all off topic as far as this thread is concerned.

Well, we can just wait and see...

For me, until Gearbox actually DO somethings about Duke to show us or I still hate them and their other games. :)

Just to be clear, that's kind of what I meant. There's no reason to say anything like MrBlackCat suggested, they would only say anything (maybe) if a fuckton of people where making a fuss on the internet, because otherwise there's no point.

They will say something when they are ready to reveal what their plans for the IP are. That is how everything works. Until that time - squat - no matter how the fans cry. Again, that's how just about everything works publicity-wise.

Well... I mostly agree with you which is why I said "But then when I think about it, if this entire fan base was gone tomorrow, it would not have any effect on GearBox at all. We really "don't matter" financially, in my opinion."

Incorrect... a statement is required to avoid what happens in the absense of a statement. I wasn't talking about products. What I mean is for example when a company I work for gets bought or makes major changes, you DO make a statement to avoid the snowball effect of lack of information. While not the same situation, the point is the lack of information.
In the absence of information, people will create their own... this seems worse on the internet. Think back to the CRAZY months/years surrounding Duke Nukem forever on the 3DR Forums. Stress. The lack of information was damaging within the fanbase... no gray area there.

I understand and I thank you for that, as it IS the very information I am talking about. You communicated your experience, even again, that GearBox reached out to you... and that is a good thing.

TerminX said:

This proves my point... they communicated with you and now you are using words like "not worried", "huge relief"...

I was thinking something along the lines of what you (TerminX) told us, but from them. GearBox could just say "Now that we have acquired full rights to the Duke Nukem IP, we are currently discussing exactly how we want to proceed with both Legacy and Next Gen Duke Nukem products. STAY TUNED!"

What would be wrong with that? Is that asking too much for a sentence? I did this in like 2 minutes... just communicating a status, or even a LACK of a status carries a lot of weight.

Well, Gearbox is not exactly known for having the best community management / relationship out there. =P
Whoops, I hope they don't read it or I'll be banned from their forums.

Not entitled. I don't feel entitled to anything.

They do have a retarded approach to forum community management. I'll never go there again.

The problem is that if Gearbox ever does something with Duke again it'll be some sort of reboot that completely butchers the character to "adapt" it to "modern audiences" (in other words, to make it politically correct). Some of the negative critics of DNF were from reviewers who thought Duke was "anachronistic".

Devolver did a great job with Shadow Warrior, IMO, but I don't trust Gearbox to do the same with Duke. :)

Yeah they did agood job with Shadow Warrior, I like how they did the weapon select, since that came up has Shadow Warrior 2 came out yet? I still like to get it.

GBX's forums suck. That simple.

Saying that, they own the IP and they have to sell games. If nobody buys it, no more Duke games.

They don't have to 'update' it. Serious Sam exists as an old fashioned arse kicker. There are plenty of them around. If you toned down a lot of the obvious OTT sexual aspects of the game, and made Duke 'Duke Nukem' who's mission was to save the world, and not 'Douche Nukem' who was OK with his girlfreinds getting killed and smearing crap on the walls, then you could probably make it fly.

Either way, they have to sort out what they are going to do with Duke3D first before they announce it.

Personally, I prefer "Diva Nukum", whose mission is to wear pink tanktops and stay current on his favorite soaps.

It's not pink, it's a nice shade of purple (somewhat bright to my tastes but anyway).
