Your opinions on Protozoid Slimer

#1

This is about the use of Slimers in a map/level. Are they good enemies, scare traps, or just good as annoying blockers? Do you welcome them in levels and maps? How often do you include them in your custom maps?

All they do is let me hit Q and W at the same time and produce a lot of gibs if you destroy a lot of eggs at once.

I'd say that they are an essential part of any alien themed area. Just don't over do it.

Gameplay wise, if you're talking 1.5 behavior, then they are a minor annoyance that can be kicked away with ease. However, in 1.3d they become a bit more of a problematic since you can't kick them, therefore you become a bit more strategic and avoid and change weapons.

They are good for killing mini battle lords.

A good use of them is when they're surrounding cocooned women, and you have to choose between killing them one by one or use a pipebomb (which is also going to kill the women and therefore spawn god knows what).

Of course this is less of a problem if you're the kind of player who kills every women anyway just so you get to kill every alien.

It's also good to have some eggs scattered during big fights, because the player has to choose whether or not to kill them first and to kill the eggs before they hatch; and then, if one gets on the player's face while he's in the middle of a fight, that's when they can become dangerous. As such I think they are underused in usermaps, where they're generally only placed in vents or dark corners "just because".

They are not nearly as annoying as the spiders in Duke Nukem II.

I generally don't use them in my maps. I find them more of a nuisance than anything else.

What about in huge city-themed maps that mostly features downtown and streets?

Still not a threat. All it means is that you'll have to hit Q once in a while and they make it a pain in the ass to 100% a map if one of the eggs hatch and the Slimer decides to hump an obscure corner or a bit from a scripted explosion (which happens much more often than you'd think).

So from what I can get from the replies, Protozoid Slimer isn't as popular with map makers as I thought.
