She looks way too scrawny, more like a model than a badass 80's chick!
And that damn haircut, it's like they were trying to add some "attitude" well it failed.

I agree with most of you: the trailer is awful and her appearance is terrible. Still, it can be a good game, I just hope they listen and give her proper hair and a better arm.
I guess expecting a kind of Xena with a shotgun was too much.

Even I said she looks bad ass and I like her in other thread(before I see this one :)).

Yeah, I agree the trailer is not good(I feel it lacks somethings...), and her appearance is...weird(but seems more bad ass if you ask me), I'm not means she looks bad or something, but I guess it should be more, uh..."non-robotic"?! :)

EDIT: Why not do a Action RPG like DLCsBorderlands? No, I'm not kidding. ;)

With this many people complaining about the look. Here's hoping they'll go back to drawing board and spent more time creating it. It screams too much generic and "meh" design. I would've added combat (Not-Super-Tight) pants and made the robotic arm less bulky.

IMO the GDF Elite blonde is hotter than Bombshell, yet Bombshell is the far better lead character.

Apart from her hair she looks nothing like Jack or Fedora, besides neither of them invented the punk style? She looks like a female version of the average early 90s game protagonist (actually like a female Bionic commando I guess)

Dude, punk gives you tons of creative freedom, especially cyberpunk. Literally anything goes. That's part of the beauty of it. The entire style exists to look cool and exude the cynical attitude of the wearer.

This is not unique, nor is it cynical. Take a quick look at your average cyberpunk character. Look at the way they carry themselves. The expression on their faces. You can tell immediately they are pissed off and brooding, or just plain degenerate. Bombshell has none of that. No emotion in the eyes or face. She's kind of blank. Was staring at your robot hand with zero emotion really needed to drive the point home that you're cybernetic? We just saw it for half a minute.

Posted Image

Look at those outfits and concepts. You can't directly borrow ideas for a new character when an old one is fresh in everyone's heads. Blood Dragon came out last year. Mass Effect 3 came out two years ago. Human Revolution? Two and a half.

If this were five years down the road parts of it would be more acceptable. Ten years down the road, it would be considered an homage in some ways. As of now, many people would view this as "jumping on a bandwagon."

The entire character model tries too hard. It's too over the top but at the same time it's dialed back a bit too much in some ways. For example, the hair. It's punk and bad ass, but God forbid it's messy. The arm looks like something you'd buy at Toys 'R Us 20 years ago, in a bad way. The bondage collar is just generic edgy crap, because the spikes are dull like something you'd buy at Hot Topic. It's not sharp like the real shit you'd buy at Xpressions. It's all about stick on cosmetics, it has no flair or substance. Jack and Rex wear the full 37 pieces of flair.

Bombshell is stuck is a grey area where she's not outlandish enough to be satire, or serious enough to be deep. It's a middle of the road area where nothing works.

You know, honestly, she reminds me of the girls you'd find on a video card box. Bland and derivative. That ain't a good thing.

I think we all are a bit upset with the game not being Duke himself. I mean i can even just imagine that trailer with Duke there instead, even the shotgun looks exactly like Dukes, besides the shells mounted on the side. I think this game could be bad ass and possibly the first rpg game i play. Some of the aliens look a bit like enforcers and some of the pictures look very familiar to Duke areas. I also think she should have a head full of hair :) but i mean it's not that bad i would still hit hehehehe. Anyway i think game could be cool, but since we were really crossing our fingers for Duke, it's like a storm cloud over my head.

That's entirely the problem. Europeans are too comfortable to be punk. They've got nationalized healthcare, high wages, vacation time, and functioning govnernments (Sometimes). That's why Scandavians listen to faggot poser black metal.

At least the Brits got fucked by Milk Snatcher.

Daedolon has shown me some underground stuff and excusing the vocals some of it is actually really good. But yeah, I can think of very few good punk bands outside of North and South America. mainly Sex Pistols, Public Image, and Millencollin, although theyre pretty suburban.

For the sake of argument, whenever someone says "90s female action hero" I don't think of punk hair cuts.

I think of Sarah F*cking Connor in Terminator 2. A woman literally driven by her knowledge of the future to come, and constant nightmares of a harrowing apocalypse. She pushes herself physically, and emotionally to be a cold unfeeling killer, and to raise her son to be the ultimate military leader. She has depth, humanity, and a strong central motivator behind her actions.

Posted Image

Hell, Ripley, The grand mother of Samus Aran, is more what I think of as a quintessential "woman of action." She's a bonafide space truck driver who takes it upon herself to rescue the overly macho space marines from their own pant shitting, then, later in the movie she goes into the alien nest on her own, kills every-last one of them... THEN she takes the mother alien on in single combat using a space-forklift. THAT is how you make a badass character... The execution of what sound like crazy ideas in a totally believable way.

Posted Image

Even Duke Nukem himself, for as much as he has become something of an OTT icon, is still just a beer-drinking guy in jeans and a t-shirt who goes on apocalyptic rampages against aliens, robots, and mutants. You don't need to "try to be a badass" to be a badass. it comes with the territory of doing amazing things.

Like I said, just for the sake of argument. Posted Image

But most of all you sound like;
"That's not the toy we wanted to play with"
Spoiler

"I want to play now, but with the other toy!"

I'm not talking about all of you, but some of you sound like this.

You just won't be happy no matter what she looks like because she's not Duke. Now I understand how lots of this is personal opinion, but lets face it, what's original now a days? Everything's been done! (almost) There is no perfect character! Even the DNF character model you criticize and dissect him, if you would have gotten the original version I'm sure you'd find things to complain about.

As for the Lawsuit, What did you honestly expect? Their being careful, do you think a small company can afford to yap away left and right without being careful of consequences.

The first trailer sucks! .... It's a TEASER! like if DNF didn't make the same style of trailers, OR WORSE. I admit it's lack luster...
"Show us something! Show us Something! show us Something!" - "Uh, we don't want to see that!"

I'm glad they didn't make another DOA character model which is indistinguishable from each other when you shave their heads.

I had to let you know how some of you sound to me, it's just getting on me nerves. And I DO SEE LOTS OF GOOD FEEDBACK, but some of you need to relax and just watch some Ugly Americans.

I have no problem with her being anything, actually. I just have a problem with a design inspired by Fred Durst.

A well designed character is a well designed character, period. Doesn't matter what clique she's a part of.

Okay, first off, I'm glad they are doing something DIFFERENT than Duke, despite being slightly related. But the entire "everything's been done" trope is utter bullshit and you know it. There's a difference between being inspired by something and being unoriginal.

The teaser is fine. Teasers are better than alpha gameplay videos with broken promises.

It's about revealing an unexceptional character, along with an idea that could be something really good. That's the issue.

Yeah the two guys who founded BioWare actually left the industry because of that shit. Gamers are assholes and I agree with you there.

Bombshell is fixable and Interceptor should tweak her looks before release.

I'm being overly harsh, I'll admit that. I'll also admit that I sound like "That guy who thinks he knows how to make a game better than a real developer." But this isn't a good design, and when this goes public it won't just be the troll cave known as Duke4.net saying so.

Also, Ugly Americans is pretty hit and miss.

Duke is outright satire, but he still manages to be his own bad ass. That's an example of a well designed character.

Hey! That's a T-800 endoskeleton hand! Best there is.

I am sorry but the T-800 hand looked way different from that. it had motors and stuff to make it look functionally sound. It also had fingers of proper length!

The concept art of the hand looks significantly better in every way, and it's mostly just layered boxes!

I meant 90s video game characters, that look like what a baby boomer thinks all video game characters look like. I definitely know fuck all about punk, although I think it's kind of the genre you can't really say you're an expert of. No true scotsman and all that.

Anyways I have to concede, I laughed when Viper said she looks like a CGI girl you'd see on the front cover of a 3D card from a couple of years back because it is kinda true. I remember reading about Ruby (I think that was her name) many years back in PC Gamer and even then I was like "so...she's not even a video game character, just a nice 3D model I guess"

Also 'Holloway' lol, I don't mind it but it is pretty stupid about the whole renaming thing. That's Gearbox's fault I guess, although I don't think EDF had a trademark on it surely? There's a whole seperate game called EDF around. Loads of different things have used it (and because I'm a huge fucking dork I like to imagine they're all connected and Duke is in there somewhere)

I was being facetious, but, punk rock is really simple to understand. Hell, I wrote a college thesis on it just so I could mention GG Allin eating shit in a paper. It extends from Iggy Pop to Stiv Bators to D. Boon to Greg Graffin to Darby Crash to H.R to DEVO. All have wildly different aesthetics. But they're all united in a single philosophy; Do whatever the hell you want. The only reason that this character doesn't strike me as punk/cyberpunk is because she doesn't have that philosophy. Instead she looks like the lead singer of Paramore had a baby with an industrial accident at a Hot Topic. She fits every generic stereotype pop culture holds while that stereotype describes basically no one who was or is actually punk.

Exactly.

What is she "being herself regardless of the rest of we losers" about? I can see hints which *I* imagine it might be... but it's not brought out via the current presentation in a way that makes me step back and say "I better shut up and listen..."

Dude, punk was invented in England.

The average American may be financially worse off, but the Brit pulls it off with more style and anger. We may have healthcare, but this is still the Nation where you can be murdered by an angry mob for wearing the wrong coloured scarf and nobody will bat an eyelid.

I don't mind the character design, I'm glad she's not a bimbo at least and she is as detailed as she needs to be for the perspective in the game. Is that "no fate" written on the cybernetic arm a nod to The Terminator?

The screenshots look nice only I keep imaging Duke in them and that's sad, so fuck you very much Shovelware.

If Interceptor want to give Shovelware the finger, It would be very funny if they added a decent create your own character option with enough options to create Duke for the game.

I don't recall the makers of all those WWE games and Saints Row 2 getting sued and you could make a great Duke in them. Of course they would have to add another story that would fit any created character, or maybe not.

Anyway it's not for me as I have a weird thing about not wanting to use female characters in games, except Tenchu.

Edit: If the game turns out to be really good I will get it.

One question.

What happens if/when 3DR win the lawsuit with GBX? Are they going to make a new game, this time with Duke in? Will Bombshell get sidelined to a secondary character?

Just curious.
