Duke3D & SW - Early/Alpha/Beta/Gold Material

Let me tell you the dates of builds, if they would fit on the right timeline to have what you speak of. 1993-09, 1993-11, 1994-07.

The first released ROTT slide show, 1ROTPIX.ZIP, features some female guards and dates to July, 1994, so the last build you've listed would seem likely to have the alternate enemy variations.

The rott stuff can be explored and extracted using XWE, A doom editor, also depicts duke files. I've used it to make small-time mods.

I would actually recommend SLADE3, XWE is old and junky.

Despite that, I can't seem to shake my own habits with XWE. SLADE3 is nice, but I haven't been using over 10 years like I have XWE. As long as you use it correctly, it'll never crash or overwrite WADS, etc.

Granted, I've only been minimally involved in Doom modding and such. I was able to switch over easily. Now when there is a superior replacement to EditArt I'm gonna have a hard time switching.

There is, it's called a real image editor and tilefromtexture.

I use Photoshop to make the artwork and EditArt to make ART files. I dont like tilefromtexture, it's just a personal preference. I'm a visual person. I probably won't use tilefromtexture until "somebody" writes a program for it. *cough cough*

What does that mean? I'm not trying to be a smartass, I honestly don't know what you have in mind.

He probably wants one of the eduke devs to make a new program or enhance one of the existing programs.

I think Hendricks has mentioned in the past that he might do something like that, but obviously he's got his hands full for the time being.

He wrote superior to Editart. Where the coding was done by the program and all you needed to do was to provide the texture and learn how to use Editart.
Nowadays, we are talking materials, not just the texture. Diffuse, Normal and specular. Each need to be written correctly in the cons to work. Sure it can be done and is done, but it ain't superior to Editart.

I started it with Qt Creator, but was sidetracked with getting into making those textures; so should there be more than one person interested (it was only Captain Awesome way back when also) I'll finish it. But reading TerminX post and yours, I doubt it.

That's a good question. For all we know, someone could already be on top of the beginnings of an additional commercial expansion design document. There is a pretty significant amount of content and modern retro stuff like Wrack is selling pretty well (not to mention sales of the original games).

I could see a new and exclusive level set based on old beta material for Megaton Edition as an additional incentive for purchasing it over the GoG version sometime down the line. Get some people from the community to clean up the maps, add some new .con coding to insert the old beta enemies without screwing with the original enemies, put a few new achievements in for good measure, and you have yourself a nice expansion pack.

You could probably do the same thing with Shadow Warrior as well.

I have some experience making maps more optimized for multiplayer now after optimizing the expansion pack maps for Megaton Edition. I might be up for more if they decide to do something like that. As long as it isn't a whole lot. An extra set of edited maps could be included instead of changing the original maps. That's what Termit did with my maps. He was actually considering editing the expansions' GRP files with my maps, but I convinced him not to.

I'm pretty sure it was other members of the community that convinced him not to, actually.

Glorified bugfixes of already completed maps are far from the level of qualifications such a project would require. A bit preemptive to volunteer yourself without merit, no?

Termit originally modified SW.GRP with an edited map from NUKEMDAVE, but I convinced him to revert it and keep the map separate. That precedent carried over to the Duke add-on map changes.

Remastering cut content into something bigger and better doesn't take away from the existence (and free release) of the original betas in the first place. Hypothetically, it would be a win-win. Problem?

Indeed, the skill level needed to make the maps appear fully finished and playable as the authors intended (of course depending on the map) would likely be quite high. And it's not just about skill either. My mapping ability should theoretically be more than enough to make the necessary modifications, however I'm not sure how compatible my style would be with the existing maps. For that reason I wouldn't volunteer myself, or be expected to be considered by others unless there was absolutely no one else available to do it.

Fucking slit arse. Anyway, I am sure this was mentioned somewhere before but would it be a good idea to make a website which can host all of the beta goodies? Parts for the different games making a repository of sorts. I am pretty certain Jimmy spoke of this before but it would be a nice little thing to have, and it would also mean all beta material is in an easy to access place.

It's going to be on the revamped 3D Realms site.

Hey, TerminX. I went back and skimmed the thread. I didn't see it, but did you actually post the full size version of your avatar in here, or are you allowed to do that? I'd like to add that with the rest of the Duke3D Cinematics images i've stockpiled if possible. Posted Image

I hope I understand correctly but I think talks of a 'repository' is going on the new 3dr website?

I am also wondering if there are any sprites of the famous snake head that got replaced by the sentry drone? Would be interesting to see

I'm pretty certain this is more of a trivial matter now, but I'll still repeat what I've asked a while ago at 3D Realms Forums: are the old, illegally leaked beta versions of Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior (v0.99 and v.090 respectively) going to get an official permission to be distributed? Of course anyone can Google them right now and get them from one of several sources, but it would still be nice to have them re-released officially (probably with some readme that states the terms and conditions of the release).

One thing though is that while the Duke Nukem 3D beta just contains the shareware levels (IIRC), the Shadow Warrior one also includes a lot of unfinished registered levels (plus some old levels that were eventually scrapped), although they are only avaliable with the level warp cheat (or the command parameter that loads a specific level).

So the Battlelord encounter was supposed to take place in the space episode? Or is it just a regular Mini Battlelord enemy depicted here?
