Hah! I'm sure George is doing fine. He did own half of 3DR, I'm sure he's bank some dough after all the sales of Max Payne, SW, and Prey IP's.

I figured he would have burned all that on DNF. I'm sure he genuinely believed in the project so I don't know if it really hits home that you've spent yourself into a hole until it starts affecting your own money. He may have personally funded development of the game near the end for all I know.

George continues to gamble, talk about the latest releases, and participate in 48 hour game jams.

Some years ago (could be three) he said he's back at 3DRealms. That's when I lost any hope for any old build of any game to ever be released.

Why? I never associated any of that sort of behavior with Joe. He doesn't seem like the kind of dude who would want to deprive fans of cool content. After all, he was originally a mega-fan himself before his initial hiring in the 90's - basically just one of us, back in the day. So, if anyone could empathize with our wishes and desires as loyal 3DR aficionados, it would be him IMHO.

Joe Siegler has historically and consistently been against releasing any sort of beta/developer content.

Has he ever explained why he took that stance?

Joe was not wrong on taking that stance. I know you guys want to see these builds(I wouldn't mind as well), but I bet that content will be disappointing to over half of you. It's the hype train that are driving most of you to want pre-release builds.

Didn't he also tease community by showing what kind of material his betas folder had?

I remember him showing at least one screencapture quite some time ago but I could've sworn it was just as a joke, as a lot of the files had silly names.

It was not Joe's decision to make. "I do not have permission to do that, nor are you going to get it from those who have it, either." - via email, circa 2010

Furthermore, the release of LameDuke and the presence of screenshots on the DNF Sidescroller page on Nacho's Wikia kick you whiners in the balls.

A big thanks to Joe Siegler for having the foresight to keep this file for
a year and half so it can be released to you!

"Tease" is a projection of your own feelings. He believed you guys would enjoy what he was able to share, which obviously wasn't more than that Old Beta CD and whatever made it to the Apogee Legacy series.

We have the contents of that CD. The "silly names" are from unreleased, canceled products.

Yeah, out of everyone there it was definitely Joe that cared the most about the back catalog.

I wasn't whining, I was pointing out why people have felt dismayed about Joe Siegler. The reasons you have given for his resistance to posting things are another story - and are valid reasons. He just ended up being the bearer of bad news.

Nope, I just don't remember or remember it that way. Memory tricks you quite often even without feelings getting in the way.

Who's "we"? And I believe we are thinking of completely different things. IIRC, the file names I saw were clearly meant as gags; i.e. not referring to any products that would ever be worked on or conceived of.

Sort of like a folder labeled "evidence of a 9/11 coverup", or something to that effect. It was quite obvious that the content of the folders - if anything - had zilch to do with what they were named.

Maybe someone can dig these shot(s) up, so I can see if I'm completely wrong...I'll probably recognize it once, erm, if I see it. :P

In a world of ever growing cries for equality - I demand to have equal knowledge and file holdings as Hendricks on this matter.
Failure to comply will result in more incessant complaining....

I basically agree with Siegler. The only thing that truly irks me is the fact that DNF missed the mark so badly, that those involved with it - while they certainly don't legally owe us anything - should perhaps be more inclined to try and compensate us for the monumental letdown. Especially with quotes attributed to George Broussard reassuring us time and time again that the final version would completely obliterate the 2001 and 1998 builds in all regards. I'm sure he wasn't intentionally lying at the time, but looking at everything in hindsight, IMO the righteous thing to do would be to work out an arrangement between the relevant parties where the fans would get to experience scrapped content they've been clamoring about all these years. I'm sure most of us would be willing to pay good money for it, so it shouldn't even be a financial issue.

Perhaps my logic is faulty - as I'm no expert when it comes to these dealings - but that's just my point of view as a lay person.

Now I'm wondering; who are those enemies that Duke are fighting in the side-scroller DNF?

Hell, with all these different DNF builds, you could make a mini comic universe out of them like all the Superman variants.

The DNF side-scroller is "DNF" by name only. Aside from starring Duke, I don't think it had anything to do with the DNF.

Still, it's an official Duke Nukem game. I wonder how far it got into development before being canceled?

It's not, when he posts a picture from his alpha and beta archive, and in the same message, he writes "No, nothing's gonna be released." (EDIT: before someone asks, no, he didn't post that picture in response to anyone's request. He just decided on his own to open a thread about a picture of folders from his archive, and say that nothing would be released. He obviously did that to brag. That was his attempt to enlarge his e-penis.)
Plus, when I told Joe about Prey's 360° screenshots for the second or third time (reminding him which filenames they had and which browser plugin they needed), he replied "The only two people here who would be interested in seeing them again are you and me." If Kathy is "projecting" her feelings, what was Joe doing with that reply?

Possible noob question/suggestion incoming:

What about including the Duke3D prototypes as a bonus feature in the upcoming Duke3D version that Gearbox is working on? It doesn't have to be all the prototypes (if working on all of them proves to be too demanding), just the ones with more content. And the rest could be showcased with pictures or clip shows, kinda like they did with DNF. Maybe make this content unlockable, requiring beating the game on the hardest difficulty or gaining certain achievements.

I might be wrong, but the inclusion of the prototypes could attract a few more people to buy the new version; people that just want the "betas" and wouldn't care about the rest. It could even attract people outside the fanbase. A raise of profits could potentially make the folks at Gearbox more interested at working on the prototypes.

Any other alternative that could benefit both parties (beta-enthusiasts and Gearbox) that i can't think of could be considered as well.

Ask Randy, if you can sell the idea to him then it could happen. The final DNF came with content showing earlier incarnations of the game, after all.

Here's some stuff I found in some old German gaming magazines. Some of the images repeat but there's some stuff I haven't seen elsewhere.

One of the pics that appears at least twice seems to be an early version of the starting area of Death Row. It looks like Duke was encased in a chamber, maybe at one point they had it as a gas chamber rather than an electric chair, or maybe it was just designed differently.

If you want to do some digging into the magazines yourself, please do so. I didn't look into the issues that were made after the Duke covered issue, and I didn't go passed 1994.

NOTE: Many of the articles contain ads and other things that may be considered NSFW. I saw an ad for ROTT that showed a nice rack of uncensored tits. It was pretty damn funny that they advertised ROTT with nudity lol. This is just one of the many types of things I mean by NSFW. However, the link to the Imgur album should be fine to view anywhere.

Yeah, he was in a chamber. The third shot in https://i.imgur.com/XZayl0r.jpg is the end of E1L2.
