GameSpy shutting down "31st of May"
#1 Posted 03 April 2014 - 05:35 PM
GameSpy is shutting down and is going to affect 100s of games across several platforms. Wii and DS games that use the WiFi Connection service are closing on the 26th of May. Some PS2 titles will be affected too but I never got to do Multiplayer stuff on that.
The original Crysis, Dungeon Defenders (non Steam), Borderlands, Saints Row 2 and Battlefield 2 are some PC titles that are affected as well.

I just know that some PS2 titles use Gamespy, no idea if people still use it. I know some people who still do Quake 3 games on their Dreamcast...

Yeah, GameSpy hosted that service

It breaks a lot of games that focus around internet connection or DLC like the Pokemon games (trading and battling), Warioware D.I.Y (Create minigames and share with people) or some of the Professor Layton games that have downloadable puzzles. I think there is a list out there somewhere but I couldn't find a decent looking one.
Dolphin only just got multiplayer capabilities too...

Which doesn't help the average user nor does it solve the Gamespy problem. UT3 for example uses dedicated servers. But the whole system (masterserver, etc ...) is (currently) Gamespy. No matter if dedicated server or not. EPIC for example has a local fix in the works. That will help those who read forums, not the others. No idea if a patch is in the works.

Can today possibly get any worse?!
You can still directly connect to servers right? It would just be the server list

According to several posts you can use a different master server for Unreal Tournament at least.

"FINALLY these last few die-hard customers can STOP playing these old games and buy some of the new disposable ones! Note to self... never have a game experience that lasts more than 8 months."

It's irrelevant. It will kill what little is left. 200+ players is considered a GOOD night.
I just joined a deathmatch with 4 people, grew to 12 within 10 minutes...That will never happen again in a few months.

Read up on it some more, UT doesn't exclusively use GameSpy anymore and Epic has their own server listings. So it shouldn't get hit as bad.

This is what it reads in my unedited ini:
ServerActors=IpServer.UdpServerUplink MasterServerAddress=unreal.epicgames.com MasterServerPort=27900
There are also two more lines: mPlayer and Gamespy. But it will also connect to their own masterserver. Same with UT2004. UT3 is said to have a solution coming up.

And it gets worse: Sony shuts down the Resistance trilogy's multiplayer servers on April 8 (same day Win XP's support to end).
It's the hardest pill to swallow.

On PC you can run your own system, which at least lets the "hardcore fanbase" that reads forums continue playing without any or litte hazzle. It was done for Unreal 2 XMP. The community set up an own masterserver and you had to edit the ini to connect to it.

Butn sometimes I'm glad that I haven't played many of the old popular games for this reason. Was never a big multiplayer guy anyway.

It will be Early Access but it was pushed forward due to the impending doom of Gamespy.
