For all we know, the new Doom game could be a top-down RPG shooter

Apparently on twitter beth (I think it was beth) called it "the next doom game", maybe it does have a number, but they are just calling it Doom for now.

At this point, I'm just hoping they aren't going to make it 'modern' by giving you regenerating health, a, limited sprint, and a 2 weapon limit.

For me, now that's an "outdated" one too.

Modern/CoD style my ass.

No weapon limit, the health system is partial regen with medpacks to fulfill what regen can't, and as far as sprinting goes I have no current idea on any limits or not. I remember hearing that stuff last year when the game was being shown around the major gaming events, whether any of it is still current is anyone's guess but I doubt they'd change major mechanics like those since they work positively towards the old school vibe they want to create.

So far it sounds like it could be a good game, though my chief concern is whether or not there is excessive linearity (CoD level linearity where you can't stray without dying, not just if it's A to B type map layouts) and hand-holding. If those are either not present or at least kept somewhat at bay it could be one of the better FPS releases of 2014, plus their cover system with the ability to make firing windows with that cutting device is superb.

That awkward moment when you are told about participating in a public beta of a game that doesn't even have screenshots yet.

Personally I am hoping no top down RPG. I am extremely excited to hear about the new Doom. I hope it goes back to the elements of the first 2, but modernized. Keep the hordes of enemies, the secrets and all that great stuff. Hell even go back to using key cards. I think if you are a true Doom fan you would love those things. And the pace has to be quicker than Doom3. I did like Doom3 and ROE but I find myself playing Doom on my ipad all the time. Even to this day. Its just so much fun to pick up and play whenever. I don't get that with Doom3.

No, I wouldn't like keycards.

Well, one or two here and there in places that makes it believable (like getting it from the hands of a dead scientist), but certainly not the usual 3 keycards (let alone placed in obscure locations).

Proper ways to unlock previously locked ares. You cannot tell in general. It has to fit the setting/story/environment and could differ from level to level.

Examples:
-Find some special explosive to blast a door somewhere.
-Find a statue to open a mystic door (yes, taken from SS, I know)
-Escort somebody who can unlock a door with a retina scan (wait, that would be an escort mission .... so, kill someone and take his eye out, instead)
-etc ...

Key-cards allow for multiple paths and backtracking.... they need to be there.

It depends on a settings. Having literally different colour keycards will be too anachronistic, but have something akin to System Shock 2 or Metal Gear Solid should work. Of course, those games had an enormous areas with backtracking when Doom was level bound.

Looks interesting. One thing I noticed and didn't like about the gameplay footage.... Consolized FOV of around 65? Yuck!

I've had Wolfenstein pre-ordered for a while.
But, that's simply due to my love for the Wolf series. The minute it was announced I knew I'd end up getting it. I only hope it holds up to RtCW and Wolf 2009. As I loved both those games and loved the direction they took Wolf since it's reboot.

As for the Doom beta... I am a longtime id Software fan. And, as part of that, a long time Doom fan. Doom II: Hell on Earth stands as my favorite entry in the series, but I loved Doom 3, and have a strong affinity for Doom 64's darker tone.
But, this Doom beta they are offering means almost nothing to me.
Mostly because it will most likely be MP focused. And I'm a single player gamer. MP means nothing to me. Nothing.
I will get the new Doom when it comes out. Because, it's Doom... and because it'll be the deciding factor on if id can still be the same company I love. With the departure of pretty much everyone that made that company what it was... I'm a little hesitant about how they stand. Specially with Bethesda pulling the strings.

ZeniMax/Bethesda release a lot of games I like (Skyrim, RAGE, DisHonored... ) but they are a pretty shady company in how they treat their studios.

So, Doom Beta... meh. May try it out just to see how the game looks/runs... but chances are it'll end up just the same as the last few betas I've played. Uninstalled after a few minutes.

Just wondering. How on earth can the PS4/xbox one price be 52 Pound and the PC version 27 pound. British pound that is. Is it a console game or what the hell. I mean I know console games are more expensive, but that is just. Wow..

I have a feeling that the Doom beta isn't going to be too hot.

The entire tech team at id software has quit and moved to Occulus - they all left this past February all together on the same day to protest the managements treatment of people.

Quote

When all of the teams merged together to create the "new" Doom team 2 years ago, there was around 140+ developers to make the game. Now, there is only around 50. The non-stop attrition has gotten so bad, that they had to contract outside the company for the multiplayer portion of the game, and we have contractors doing a bulk of our art work.

Yikes! What a disaster.

Are they allowed to say things like that? I would have thought there would be an NDA on the development of Doom.

Valve has a problem with 3's.

It seems like old school shooters are having a problem with 4's.

Doom is going to be a huge pile of shit. There's almost no hope for it not to be with that being the direction it's going. It's now literally going to be a machined and processed product to dump out and make a buck off the name. I have virtually no doubt of this.

There is no id Software anymore. It's a logo, and a name. Hell, even 3D Realms at least still has some ties to it's original group with Scott and George still touching on it from time-to-time.

That stuff is definitely under NDA. Glassdoor is a site for job seekers that offers transparency, salary figures, if it's a stable work environment, etc.. to potential applicants. Sometimes it's used for venting behind-the-scenes issues, to warn people about certain companies.

There's nothing really new here. id's glass ceiling has always been an issue. Doom 4/reboot 7 is in big trouble. They have some of the worst management in the games industry. Zenimax has major management issues, too.

This. Id is really digging it's own grave from the looks of it.

I think the point is that the id Software we 'knew' is already dead and buried (which 3D Realms has been for years).
What strikes me about those Glassdoor reviews is that the more positive accounts are as damning as the negative ones (which look like they're written by the same person).
Bad management, lousy atmosphere - how on earth can that be fruitful soil for a high quality product?

Don't forget that there'd be some bias in the reviews. I mean in most cases you'd either have to really love something or hate something to go through the trouble of actively seeking out review sites and writing reviews.

It's not isolated, though. We've heard this kind of thing elsewhere. Not to mention, just looking at the situation. Massive chunks of the team just up and left. Including the brains and creative heads of the operation. That is going to result in a terrible, terrible, finish line.

"These sort of games might have worked at the old id software, but this is not how you run a successful AAA studio today."

Guessing that guy was part of the COD clone DOOM4 project.

Or who knows how much truth is behind this at all.

All I know is buddy told me once id was bought by ZeniMax, the entire feel of the studio changed. How things worked, how it flowed... the tone around the office just dropped.
And once RAGE was released, and ZeniMax locked down on id... the feeling of being able to be creative just disappeared.
He said that yes, the upper management made mistakes, but everyone in the company... from Todd and John down to the bottom tier guys... nobody was happy. And, it was coming across in the work. There's a reason Todd, John and everyone else left.
To be working on Doom, have ZeniMax come in and tell them... "you can't do this, look at RAGE... make it more mainstream."
They do, ZeniMax comes in... "You can't do it like that, it's too much like Call of Duty... make it more open, like Fallout"... he said while blame is on the id guys as well, he said that it just didn't seem to matter how they made the game, ZenIMax wasn't happy with what they were doing.

Personally, I've got Wolf: TNO pre-ordered. But, my Doom beta key is being given away to a buddy. I have no interest in some MP beta (which I'm guessing it'll be a MP beta) as I don't play MP. Ever.
People shouldn't pre-order Wolf for the beta, they should get it because they want Wolfenstein. Which is what I'm doing.
Wolf looks awesome and I can't wait to get it.

Doom... I'll get it because it's Doom, and it's the last game that was in the works while id was still the id I knew. But, that period is dead and gone. This Doom will help me know if id is just "bury it" or "follow it".
