All the grain and CCTV-style effects make it look like Manhunt. Still, very cool.

The grain and such is probably because they are scans from a magazine. I remember seeing those screenshots in a magazine back in the day.. probably PC Gamer.

Nice find! I've never seen 1997 shots before. Wasn't Max Payne originally called Dark Justice and was a top-down shooter? Scott Miller made them change the perspective, and implement a bug into a core feature: Bullet Time. He was talking the other day how George Broussard initially didn't see the potential in M.P. and wanted to cancel the project.

I remember thinking Max Payne would never ship because it looked too awesome - kinda like an impressive tech demo. It's one of those rare games that completely obliterated my expectations. Still has a permanent place on my hard drive.

Wow, it changed for good!
I think those screenshots resemble the Die Hard Trilogy game

That muscle-bound guy with the green eyes and the polygon counts makes me think of SiN

Even without a video, I can imagine the stiff animations those guys have, if the mech part of Final Reality is any indication. It's like they designed everything to be simple enough for a S3 ViRGE as a minimum requirement.

And thank god they didn't keep that awful red/yellow muzzleflash!

Also looks like Backstabbing Bastard.

The Max Payne Alpha looks kind of like Kingpin. It may not be as good as the retail Max Payne, but I tend to be fond of stiff primitive early versions of my favorite games, even with their weird early color schemes. Just imagine Max Payne's fate if DNF had been released before it.

I agree with the Kingpin comparison, as the look is quite stylised in contrast to the final game which had a realistic bent in terms of the art direction. Very different indeed.
