New Duke Egoisms.

So, it's a year and a half out since Duke Nukem Forever. Eventually Gearbox will be picking up the reigns to do another Duke game. Whether it's a remake/reboot, or a sequel remains to be seen. (Though likelihood indicates former, rather than the latter.).

The reason i'm not putting this under the Duke Forever section is because it's not really about Duke Forever in any way, but I do want to start off by saying - there were many things about DNF I was unhappy about, but there were also some really cool things they did that i'd like to see refurbished or expanded on in the next game. One is the idea of using Duke's persona, and ego as driving forces for the game. IE, you get stronger by being a vain, muscle-bound, bad ass. (Pissing, mirrors, weights, and winning games, all boosted your ego.) I'd like to see similar things in Duke 5, with a better implementation. Certain game puzzles, like the Duke statue was very true to the character and nicely over the top. I'd love to see more things like that. Though if it is a reboot, perhaps without his name being established yet we could see more things that the player could do that tie into the game play and story as those elements that established his "Hero of the universe" status in his world.

So, what kind of Duke-egoisms, or Duke-centric stuff would you enjoy seeing in the next Duke game?

I don't cater to good ol' Duke's ego, never did. My wish for Duke is to give him some 'evil' brains. Not exactly an Einstein, but a little above muscle head, level.
Let me create traps to exterminate a bunch of aliens, let me use their 'secret' weapon (I need to find) and use it against them - stuff like that. Give me ego for being smart, not for ehmm, pissing. Posted Image

I want this expression on Duke's face through most of the next game. At 2:40.

Duke wasn't angry enough in Duke Nukem Forever. He should've got pissed off as soon as he seen on TV that the aliens were visiting Earth. He didn't say one word about it.

The next game will probably be a reboot. They'll tell a story about how he became Duke, the sacrifices he made... And the other hype bullshit. One thing for sure - the dramatic element will be quite high since implied rape scene(which was sort of confirmed by Randy) will be the cornerstone of Duke's hatred towards aliens and will explain his facade about being a chicks' dream guy. They will really make people care about Duke in this one. This will also have a tie-in with a long rumoured resurfaced movie. Franchise is coming back in a big way!

I can agree with that to a point. The character has always been an ego-centric guy, but making more about the player's ego(along the lines of "risk versus reward") might be a better way to go.

I have to agree. Though my problem with it is that Duke basically kept going back and forth in a very half-assed way. He needed to pick an emotion and stay with it. Either he's really pissed off, or he's going to ham it up. (If he's going to ham it up, then the characters around him need to be in-line with General Graves, serious business.)

This intrigues me, are you just talking out of your ass or do you have a link to Randy's quote there? I'd love to read that.

I enjoyed interacting with game for ego boosts too and would love to see that come back in the next game just not as the CoD Regen health thing, an idea I had is if they did the DN5 Ego system something like the BL2 health system, DNLOTBs Ego system and DNFs Ego boosts mashed together where Duke starts out with say 30% Ego and it stays at 30% but like if Duke pulls an execution on an alien, kills a lot of them with 1 pipebomb or even lets out a one liner, Duke's ego goes up to like 50% but then starts counting down slowly back to 30%, so if Duke can keep killing, his Ego will keep climbing, making Duke and the player feel more like a badass, also in order to permanently increase Duke's ego so it doesn't keep going back down to 30%, Duke has to interact with things like in DNF, the mirrors, weights and killing a lot of aliens. Just an idea I had

I would also like the shrunken segments to come back too, I really liked them and if DN5 has a motorcycle segment it would be awesome if Duke and his Harley got shrunk down and he road through say the ducts of the alien ship or something.

I would also love if these interactive items need to be found by searching and experimenting. Not presented all in the same location along a narrow carridor with a huge sign telling "press Enter to <insert activity here>".

But the lhat will probably stay a dream considering todays generations attention span and intelligence.

Oh, and the interactivity could use some suprise and entertainment elements. You know, punching a punching bag in a gym is ... well, so obviously obvious. There should be little creative and/or funny twists to it like being able drinking from a broken hydrant and gaining health like in DN3D, or gaining health when you give money to the stripper and they show you their boobies (like in that little DN3D mod). All that a bit more expansive with today's capabilites of the engines and stuff.

Maybe even for being creative, like a boost for picking up a baseball bat or golf club lying around and bashing an alien's face in with it.

I still want to fight the terminator that was in the 2001 trailer... That would be fun.

on the 2001 trailer, having a game with a first-person motorcycle that handles like that trailer would be awesome.

Yeah, that "terminator" was probably just a Duke robot or whatever they're called, which are themselves terminator references I guess.

A big problem with the interactivity in DNF is that it was all pretty useless. In Duke you would get health from certain things, which is great (plus all the fun destructibility of the environment, which is somewhat present in DNF but oh so much less memorable).
But what do you get when you interact with a new item? An extra pixel of width on the ego bar hurray! At the end of the day, battles would always result in a flashing red mash where your ego bar is supposedly zero and you have no idea how much more damage you could take. The ego boosts (and in fact the entire "ego" system) were a joke.

Duke3d also had stupid interactivity. And I like it that it had zero usability since interactivity in itself makes levels more real and believable when you can interact with lots of things. DNF should have had interactivity without impacting EGO bar like it's some kind of a necessary thing to interact with the world.

The Ego bar thing would have been okay if there wasn't designated interactive "areas"

It was like want interactivity? Have a level where that's all you do!

Want it 6 hours in? Too bad bitch, have a turret sequence or 50 invisible walls instead!

It should've been something like the first Crysis, almost everything was interactive, no matter how pointless or useful. You could bash people to death with bananas, chop up a tree and throw the tree pieces around, put C4 on a chicken and throw it at people, etc.

This is true. I think this more than anything in the next game needs to be understood. Don't be so overly segmented that the immersion is broken. In Duke3D, most of the interactive stuff was right out in the open amidst the battling you were doing. Gun down some aliens, fidget with the light switch, toilet, or mirror. Blast a couple pigs, check out the pool table, go kill some more.

I'd love to see some of the combat-centric antics from Bulletstorm in Duke5, too. Like kicking an alien into a power-generator, with one of two possible out comes. Either it electrocutes the badguy, or it makes them super badass like Bennet from Commando.

Or like Mr Bison :)

One thing that really dissappointed me was the reaction of Duke to the twins' death. First of all, no woman should die in front of our almighty hero, and second... he wasn't angry at all! he just made a bad joke!
In the next game we should be able to save any civilian.

Another thing I strongly dislike are the 'dialogues' with other characters, which really were monologues ala Half Life 2, which is something I hate. It had no sense, Duke is known for his witty comments and he just shut up while everybody gave him orders, just like Gordon Freeman. This is terrible, that way of story-telling is awful, killing the replay value because you can't skip their boring chatter. It must be changed with more Duke interaction in the conversation and more natural situations, without breaking the gameplay. Even better, use cool videos which you can skip and surely will be more spectacular and fitting to Duke.

This was one of my biggest complaints about DNF BY FAR. It was like shattering the fourth wall with a fucking bulldozer.
