Which Duke game has the best soundtrack? "In your opinion..."

I also like a few of the Duke 3D songs, such as Grabbag and Stalker, and Prince's Pizzed and Aliens, but most of the tracks in that game are rather weak and slightly dull compared to the Duke 2 music. They lack the catchy, rocking style of the Duke 2 songs.

A lot of the Duke tracks (maybe all of them) might not jump out (as you mentioned they're not in the vein of a catchy, rocking style) but they're actually quite good, as they add a lot of feel to an already strong ambience present in the game. I'm sure I remember X-Vector mentioning that he is a fan of the music of the game, and he could probably elaborate more on why they suit the feel of Duke 3D. Each to their own.

I wouldn't exactly call XPLASMA or ROBOCREP relaxing so much as I would call them unnerving, but I otherwise agree with you; the diversity and variety of Duke Nukem 3D's soundtrack gives it an edge not just against other Duke Nukem game soundtracks, but against other soundtracks in general (except maybe DooM, which Bobby Prince also composed for!).

"Main Theme"
"Liberty or Death"
It rocks.

I should've uploaded that without that effect applied to the audio. I didn't do it. It's a version I downloaded somewhere. I thought it still sounded better, though.
Here's the full, raw theme. I just recorded it straight from my N64. No quality loss.

Number of downloads: 177
Play it in Windows Media Player with SRS WOW on. In my opinion, it should replace this one:

Nah, every Duke game had a soundtrack that suited that particular game. If I had to choose one it'd have to be Duke Nukem II, E1L7's DUKIN' is by far my favorite piece of music from any Duke game, that and I could never play that one on the synth, pitchbends always caught me out. That game also had tracks that borrowed from Megadeth and was a big factor in why I started listening to metal.
This guy's recording sucks, I might upload the OST myself in the end, I'm sick of this low quality or emulation rubbish.

You know, when I made my post, I was thinking to myself - "Hmm, I don't suppose there would be a good track for The Abyss, though." Go figure. The atmospheric levels have atmospheric tracks for a reason, it seems.

A recording of the Duke 2 soundtrack on your Adlib Gold S/PDIF would be godlike. If you did it, I would gladly help put together a Duke 2 soundtrack mod for Duke 3D. The only thing that would require a little bit of coding would be triggering the boss theme and end-of-episode theme but that's very simple. Other than that it would be assigning appropriate tracks to each level.
Unless I could be arsed to implement something so we could get the "3D Realms Fanfare" working.

As you said, triggering the boss music would be rather trivial to implement and actually, the fanfare might be, I'm not sure wether the command for playing music on a certain frame of an IVF is useable whilst using the original ANMs (triggering the sound on the last frame), or else it could be possible to do something in event_logo, though I don't know as I have never used that one for anything.

In some levels I think it would. But overall, the music (and mood) of D3D is much darker, and that contrast I think makes an upbeat song like Alienz work even better when it starts. I do think Duke 3D could have used more upbeat songs though, but not all the way through the game.

Same here, Dukin' is my all-time favorite Duke song. It was so catchy and memorable when I first heard it on my old Ad Lib card (which I don't have anymore, have to rely on emulation now). It's one of two Duke II songs that I've made realistic aggressive metal versions of (the other one being He's Back!), but I think the original Ad Lib versions are still better than my remixes.
