Return to 3D Realms.

We all remember the fateful day, now two years ago, when we were told that Gearbox had DNF, and they were going to finish it, and that we should now migrate over to their forums to discuss Duke related stuff. In that instance a lot of things seemed to change. I honestly thought everything 3D Realms would be gone. The website, all of it. I was very much shocked to see that the forums are still around, even now. Though they're honestly very empty these days.

It got me thinking, about all the time I spent lurking those forums from 2002 to 2005, until I registered finally in 2006. All the discussion that went on. There was so much stuff, so many great people. There were some tussles, but what family doesn't have those?

I miss that community.

I don't know really what my point was with this. Except simply the above. Maybe it's a plea to those among the old guard, and the not-so-old guard but still very much regulars of those days, to see if maybe we can... Somehow, respark that old community and bring it back to it's original strength.

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love Duke4.net. It's a refuge and a salvation for this community, and it needs to endure and be supported. This is more aimed at that company that many of us had a sense of loyalty to for a long time. I'd like to help 3D realms in some fashion refind itself, and at least as the community, we can rally together. Yes "it's gone" but that's not permanant. The company itself still exists, that history still exists, and maybe if they see that there's still a fan base that actually cares still, they could start actually trying harder to get their IP's reinvented and back out there.

I don't know. I probably sound crazy or delusional or something. I just wandered through some of the threads over there, and it really kinda hurt for some reason.

My password/email are gone. And the older account was banned ages ago(though I still can reset its password). Pretty much the sign to move on. You should too.

I have checked 3D Realms Forums every day continuously, even through May 9, 2009. On the majority of days, my User CP is empty, much differently than all the activity that used to show up with the HRP threads and everything over there. On many days I check the forum index and see little activity, and I have nothing to post or start a topic about. If there was some reason to reform activity at 3D Realms, that would be great. But, it cannot be Duke Nukem.

Are they even working on any games right now?

No, they don't even have offices anymore.

Not according to Joe. The main 3DR building was vacated a long time ago and bought by Goodwill or something, but a couple of guys who are still with the company do have a very small bit of office space somewhere else. They don't wish to reveal where though.

There's still basically four guys "with" the company. George, Scott, and two others. Granted that's nothing, but they could still be producers over titles. I'd love to see them get together with another company and reboot Shadow Warrior or something.

Man they are all here, on this very forum.
What original strength? We have two major TCs on the go; a shit load of new maps came out. They put Duke on Wii (OK it's not finished). I for one do not wish the old days back. I left in 2000 for a reason, WID, ehmm well call me. Nah, I want to be part of a community that progresses, and I think they are progressing.

A number of them aren't here, though, Hank. A number of guys left the thing entirely.

Plus, like I said, i'd never stop coming here or anything of that nature. Duke4.net really is the only place to be right now for genuine Duke Nukem stuff.

Don't get me wrong, either, Hank. I love what people do here. It's just... Different. It's not the same.

Time moves forward, and things do change. People lose interest, some people were around just for DNF, and others decide to focus on work/family rather than modding an old game. Asking for it to go back the way it was is impossible since it's not a conscious change, and all things have to come to an end, or at least change. There are lots of positive things happening in the community right now (and in the video game world) Just remember the good times of back then and contribute to what we have now.

Scott Miller does want to work on projects, and has stated in an interview that there's some in the works with smaller companies. He liked my idea of a new Shadow Warrior, but didn't really say anything (This was on Facebook). I've found out a lot of stuff from them because of Facebook, him and Tom Hall talk about Commander Keen a lot, and John Romero just pops in from time to time. John St. Jon also is on there, so is Joe.

I also mentioned the unreleased betas of DN3D, but so far he hasn't said anything.

More info:

John St. Jon told me that the Gearbox Duke voices were all new. If you look on YouTube, you'll find some videos of Duke Forever from when the game wasn't released (and still under 3DR roof). The voices sounded more like that from Manhattan Project, and also shows you that Duke's model was changed when Gearbox took over. I always thought the voices were left overs when they were going to make Duke older and retired, and aliens attacked again forcing him to return to work. He corrected me on this.

Very cool info, I'd love a new Shadow Warrior too if it was done right. ^^ Interesting too that Duke's model and voice clips were changed by Gearbox. ^^

I login to my 3DRealms account from time to time, but nothing more than for nostalgia. Good times. ^^

And i'd never besmirch the guys who work on Eduke32 or any of the mods here. That's not at all what i'm about with this thread. You guys over there do some really amazing, incredible stuff that I will always admire and always have.

That's a bit of a ray of sunshine .I haven't really asked any of them about that sorta stuff because I figure they get it a lot. Posted Image

Yep! The whole PAX thing and all that. So, a few months shy of two years ago. :)

Nostalgia, beautiful feeling. Makes the past even better than it really was. But even if had been like it was before it still wouldn't be the same believe me. Everything changes if you like it or not. You can't step in the same river twice. Many say you shouldn't look back too much because you can miss something better which is ahead of you.

There's no point in reforming the 3DR forums unless there are flamewars about Half Life 2 VS Doom 3, SkatePix and Ivan, Gatinater talking about how much of a badass motherfucker he was, Postwhores Paradise/Meddling Kids, Simon Charles giving love advice, Laffer, and moar activity from John and Yatta.

Oh yeah, Drazula (I think?) vs Mountain Man. I actually remember Drazula had his own smily with something like ITFW or whatever, I never found out what it meant.

It was "IMHOSTFU", if I remember right.

EDIT: I still listen to Yatta's "3DR Anthology: Poop on a Stick" album every once in a while. John's "Robert, Jimbob Would Like His Ballgag Back, Please" is the greatest song of all time. OF ALL TIME.

IMHOSTFU was some separate forum where a bunch of disgruntled users went many years before 3DR closed up shop. Drazula's smiley said IFTW, and it meant "I fear the worst."

Cheers. So why didn't everyone migrate to IMHOSTFU then? :) I think everyone was disgruntled.

To a point. The difference is I can browse a chunk of those memories and it's just as I remember it. No golden blur around the edges. It's just good memories, good times.

Pretty sure dat sheet was invite only, yo.

And Duke4.net was/is/always will be cooler.

Oh, well, it was only for people who were both disgruntled AND thought they were better than everyone else. I'd have to consult a dictionary, but I think the term might be "losers." I'm pretty sure it's where people like Lengis, er, "EnigmaHood" hung out. Because sometimes, dorks harness so much irrational hatred for other dorks on the Internet that they feel the need to create an entire forum out of it.

True. I think I understand your query better. Posted Image

I just remembered, I signed up first with Dukeworld, because of the TCs, then JS, Ursurper and Cyborg (clamour) answering my n00b questions, and so on. When Dukeworld closed I switched to 3D Realms - yeah, I forgot, my affinity was mostly with Dukeworld not 3D Realms.
So I am actually off topic. Sorry dude. Posted Image

Random fact few people know: when 3D Realms closed, Joe sent me the original backup CD-Rs for the Dukeworld ftp, but the contents weren't any different from what I already had uploaded to the Dukeworld file archive.

It's also funny you mention JS, Usurper and Cyborg... we were all pretty good friends. Cyborg made the site for my TC that was hosted on Dukeworld, Usurper I stayed friends with for years (he actually bought me the PSU I'm still using in my Windows box, and he continues to own and pay for the eduke32.com domain name), and JS I still talk to every now and then via IM.

Edit: now that I think about it, the Duke community has been pretty generous with giving me stuff to help support EDuke32 development. The video card in my Linux box was a gift from Plagman, and the card in my Windows box was bought with a couple of large donations from Mblackwell and SwissCM.

Dukeworld. There's another sad case. I remember when that was going the way of the do-do. So many years ago. Holy crap. Used to go on there and oogle the pictures of TC's. I was uber big into Alien vs Duke back then.

Then came totalconversions.com

I remember when I joined as a noob on those forums, around 2007 I think, and started lots of threads like the "DNF High Resolution Pack" thread. People laughed or got annoyed back then, but given the state of the final product, maybe a DNF HRP wasn't such a bad idea after all Posted Image

Quite.

Digging through the old DNF section, through all the posts made in 0708 and 09 up until the announcement in May. It was really quite something.

I'd love to have the whole, beyond what is merely on the site right now, archive on disc, Just to be able to keep those memories forever.
